BUCKLE.
Application filed January 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BELARs, a sub ject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New Britain, in the county of Iartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles.
One of the chief purposes I have in view is the provision of an article of this character for maintaining the tongue in proper relation at all times or in the various positions of the tongue, with the bar which carries it. The tongue should properly be at approximately right angles to the bar which carries it, and as may be inferred, the means I provide insure this particular condition in the various positions of the tongue.
In the ordinary type of buckle the bar which carries the tongue has what is known as a tongue slot. This tongue slot is gen erally formed by the space between the two lugs projecting rearwardly from the tongue carrying bar of the buckle. These lugs do not efliciently perform their office for it is a recognized fact among buckle manufacturers and harness assemblers that the free portion of the tongue is susceptible to a considerable amount of lateral movement, which as will be gathered I prevent. Owing to this fact it is a laborious and time-requiring operation to connect a strap with the buckle, because before this operation is commenced it is imperative that the tongue be perpendicular to the bar which supports it, and in a majority of instances the assembler must manipulate the tongue to secure its accurate position and sometimes this requires some effort.
As is recognized the buckles when cast are put in a tumbling box or barrel and the lugs to which I have referred do not protect the bar betwen them, the consequence being that that part of the bar which is to constitute a pivot for the tongue will be flattened down, so that when the tongue is connected to its bar, the connection actually becomes a wabbly one. I provide the tongue carrying bar of my buckle with means which not only effectually preclude possibility of lateral movement of the tongue when in the open or the closed positions, but also prevent the pivot portions of the tongue-carrying cross- Specification of Letters Patent.

bars, when the buckles are tumbled from being deformed.
I In the drawings accompanying and form- 111g part of the present specification I have shown two of the several convenient forms of embodiment of the invention, which I will fully set forth in the following description. 1 do not limit myself to this disclosure; I may depart therefrom in several respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claim following said description.
Referring to said drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are top and bottom plan views respectively of a buckle involving the invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross sections on the line 3-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows 3 and 4 respectively applied to said line. Figs. 5 and 6 are top and bottom plan views of a different form of buckle, and, Figs. 7 and 8 are sections on the line 78 of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows 7 and 8 respectively applied to said line.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive I have shown one type of buckle and Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive another, these being merely two of many different kinds in which the invention can with advantage be incorporated. The buckle shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive is denoted in a genment of the tongue, but do not interfere with I the two stops of circular form. The space between these two annular stops or abutments 15 and 16 presents a circular tongue slot, although as Ihave already noted it may not be necessary in all cases that the tongue slot be circular. Its side walls should, however, be of an extent suflicient to prevent side motion of the tongue when the latter is in its extreme and intermediate positions which is not possible with the existing buckles.
The buckle shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive is denoted in a general way by 20, the tonguethereof being carried by the crossbar 22 disposed transversely of the buckle frame practically midway of the length. This crossbar is provided with a pivot portion 23 to receive the tongue eye 24, and it also has annular stops or abutments 25 and 26. As a matter of fact the tongue carrying crossbar 22, and the tongue 21 are precisely like the corresponding parts already described, the
only difference being that the tongue carrying bar of the buckle 20 is at the middle instead of at the end of the buckle frame.
hat- I: claim is:
A buckle, the frame ofwhich has a cross bar provided with an intermediate cylindrical pivot portion and also provided with annular stops at opposite sides of the pivot portion, the space between the annular stops constituting, a tongue slot, said buckle having a tongue supported for swinging movement by said pivot portion said annular stops preventing. side movement of the tongue in opposite directions in the various positions. of the tongue,
In testimony whereof I aiiix my. signature in presence of'two witnesses.
JOHN BELARS.
