CHARLES W. GRAF, .OF HAMPSTEAD, MARYLAND.
WIRE-SPLICER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application led .Tune 24, 1916. i Serial No. 105,701.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. GRAF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hampstead, in the county of Carroll and State of Marylandhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in lNire- Splicers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
lner toA afford a means whereby the device may be placed in operative position with convenience andv facility.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination yand arrangement of the several parts of my improved splicer whereby certain important advantages are attained and the `device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all 'as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. y
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating al wire splicer constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. t is a view in elevation of one of the heads, detached, as herein included; Fig. 5 is a View in elevation of the .second head as herein embodied; and Fig. 6 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes a head having integrally produced therewith the handle l and said head H is provided with the depressed portion 2 substantially circular in form with which is adapted to coact the head H also provided with kthe handle 3, said heads H and H being pivotally connected so that the handles may operate in the same manner as a pair of pliers.
The heads Hand H are provided with the jaws 4 which permit the device to be used when desired for the same purpose as conventional pliers; The head H at the inner end of the jaw l is provided with the hub 5 extending beyond the opposite faces thereof and serving as a mounting for the twisting disks 6 which have their peripheries provided with the ratchet teeth 7. The disks 6 are seated within the reduced portions 8 formed in the opposite faces of the head H and in the outer face of the head H.
The head H is provided with a substantial radial enlargement 9 which is adapted to be employed, when required, asa hammer or the like, and said enlargement 9 adjacent the opposite faces of the head is provided with the recesses 10 in each of which is mounted the spring-pressed dog 11 coacting withthe ratchet teeth 7 of the disks 6 for Aholding the same against movement in one direction.
The hub 5 is provided with the forwardly directed entrance slot 12 disposed longitudinally thereof throughout its entire length, Vwith the free edge thereof provided with the notchk 14 through which is adapted to pass the web 15 carried by the jaw 1 of the head H', whereby it will be perceived that one of the wires may be effectively held within the hub 5 when the jaws are in closed or contacting relation.v It is also to be noted that the disks 6 are provided with the radially disposed entrance slots S which are adapted to register with the entrance slot 12.
The disks 6 as herein disclosed are maintained in applied position through the medium of the washer members 16 contacting with the outer faces of the disks 6 and through which extend the pins 17 carried by the ends of the hub 5 and disposed through suitable openings in the washers 16, it being understood that after said washers are placed in applied position, the outer ends of said pins 17 are preferably upset.
Each of the disks 6 is provided with a laterally directed and outwardly disposed perforate ear 18 through which an extremity of one of the wires is adapted to be disposed, while the second wire is disposed directly through the hub 5. It will be perceived that upon movement of the handles l and 3 in one direction, the ratchets will be caused to rotate in one direction to twist the wires one about the other, but that said disks 6 will remain inoperative when the handles are moved in an opposite direction in order to continue the twisting operation. It is to be understood that in eecting a splice a wire coacts with only one of the disks G in accordance with the requirements of practice.
As is particularly illustrated in Fig. 1, an end of each of the recesses l0 is provided Ywith a socket 19 to accommodate the rounded extremity of the coacting dog 11, while the 'opposite end of said dog is provided with an inwardly disposed extension 2O with which coacts the expansible member 2l herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring seated within the pocket 22 in communication with the recess. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the dog may be applied in operative position with convenience and facility.
The adjacent peripheral portions of the heads H and H are provided with the notches or grooves 23 alfording wire cutters.
I also have found it of advantage to provide one of the handles, as 3, with the claws 24: whereby the same may be employed as a nail extractor and to provide the second handle, as l, with the point 25 whereby the same may be used as a staple puller.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a splicer constructed in accordance with my invention'isV 1. A device of the character described comprising two pivotally connected heads provided with operating handles, one of said heads being provided withV a hub extending beyond opposite sides thereof, said hub being provided with a longitudinally disposed Copies of this patent 4may be obtained for entrance slot, ratchet disks rotatably mounted upon the extended portions of the hub and provided with entrance slots adapted to communicate with the entrance slot of the hub, and spring-pressed dogs carried by said head and coacting with the ratchet disks for holding the same against rotation in one direction.
2. A device of the character described comprising two pivotally connected heads provided with operating handles, one of said heads being provided with a hub extending beyond opposite sides thereof, said hub being provided with a longitudinally disposed entrance slot, ratchet disks rotatably mounted upon the extended portions of the hub and provided with entrance slots adapted t0 communicate with the entrance slot of the hub, spring-pressed dogs carried by said head and coacting with the ratchet disks for holding the same against rotation in one direction, and an outwardly directed perforate ear carried by each of the ratchet disks.
3. A device of the character described comprising two pivotally connected heads, one of said heads being provided with a hub extending beyond a face thereof, a ratchet disk rotatably supported by the extended portion of the head, said hub and disk being` provided with entrance slots adapted to register, means carried by the head and coacting with the ratchet disk for holding the disk against rotation in one direction, and an outwardly disposed perforate ear carried by the disk.
A. A device of the character described comprising two pivotally connected heads, one of said heads being provided with a hub extending beyond a face thereof, a ratchet disk rotatably supported by the extended portion of the head, said hub and disk being provided with entrance slots adapted to register, means carried by the head and coacting with the ratchet disk for holding the disk against rotation in one direction, and an outwardly disposed perforate ear carried by the disk, said disk partially overlying the second head when said heads are at the limit of their inward movements.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
