Application filed March 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. BROU- YETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bed spring, wire bed bottom, or like flexible structure for supporting the mattress or pad in a bed, couch or cot; and the principal object of the invention is 'to provide a bed spring, or equivalent structure, with means for holding the mattress or pad in place, which, because of its simplicity, will add little or nothing to the expense of manufacturing the spring and will not make a spring provided therewith any more cumbersome or.
more diflicult to pack, ship or otherwise handle than the ordinary bed spring.
The invention is illustrated in two somewhat different embodiments, in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a link fabric bed spring provided with the mattress holding device of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the device. Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, of a spiral spring bed bottom constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, 10 indicates the end rails of the supporting frame of a wire mattress or bed spring, and 11 the side rails. The fabric is shown as made up of a plurality of wires 12, each bent to form a series of Vs, the apexes of which are provided with hooks 13 which engage the apexes of the ll-shaped bends ofadjacent wires. The end wires are secured to the end rails 10 of the frame by means of helical springs 14. The fabric is completed by a pair of lateral marginal wires 15 engaged in any suitable manner by wires 12. These marginal lateral wires are provided with upstanding projections which are preferably constituted bv bending the wires to form off-sets 16. These off-sets keep the mattress from slipping off the spring. At the same time they add little or nothing to the ex- Specification f Letters Patent.

Serial No. 13,962.
The marginal wires 15 are preferably kept taut by helical springs l4 which, in each case, engage the adjacent end rail 10 and a bend 17 formed in the wire. Beyond the bend 17 the wire is formed with an inward horizontal offset 18, the end of the wire being anchored to the end rail in any suitable manner. For instance, it may be attached to oneof the helical springs 14. By this means the lateral marginal wires 15 are held so that the ofisets 16 are in substantially vertical position. It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular kind of fabric described, which is of familiar construction except so far as concerns the lateral marginal wires.
The same expedient may be applied to a spring or bed bottom in which spiral springs are employed. This is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. 19 designates a supporting structure of any preferred construction for the spiral springs 20. The upper ends of the springs are secured to a rectangular wire structure 21 provided with intermediate longitudinal wires 22 and cross wires 23. The lateral marginal wires 24 of the rectangular structure are formed with upstanding off-sets 25, which keep the mattress 26 in position, as shown inFig. 4.
In the claims I have used the term bed spring in a generic sense as covering any bed bottom, couch bottom, wire mattress. or other like flexible, resilient structure for supporting a mattress, pad, or the like. The term mattress is likewise intended to cover a pad or similar article of bedding supported on the spring.
I claim:
1. In a bed spring, a rigid frame consistsprings interposed between the horizontal spring on opposite sides thereof, and are oil-sets of the lateral marginal Wires and bent at intervals to provide upstanding offsaid end rails. sets to keep the mattress in place.
2. In a bed spring, a flexible fabric com- CHARLES D. BROUYETTE. prising marginal Wires Which are inter- Witnesses: Woven with and form parts of said fabric, GEO. P. McEN'rrnn, extend continuously the length of the bed A. M. PosT.
