WILLIAM A. MIDDLETON, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MIDDLETON, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference be letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in the construction of a triple socket for fencing or other purposes; second, in the construction of the fence post itself; and third, in the combination of the ground-post, fence-post, and triple socket, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the entire post, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the triple socket.
A represents the ground-post, or the post which is put down in the ground. On the upper end of this post is secured the triple socket B. This socket is constructed as shown in Fig. 2, it being, in fact, three sockets, to, a, and b, made in one whole. The middle socket b is placed over the end of the ground-post A and fastened by means of screwsd d. In the side sockets to a are inserted the side pieces 0 O of the fence-post proper, and secured by screws 0 e. The upper ends of the side pieces 0 O are connected by a cap, D,
and between them are secured at suitable intervals cross-pieces or partitions E E, to form rests for the rails or boards of which the panels are composed.
The fence-posts may be made of wood or iron, as may be desired, and if made of iron the side pieces may be in one piece bent in the center, in which case the top cap may be dispensed with. The triple socket B may be used for any purpose where it is desired to have a post in the ground and another post joined to its upper end. When the ground-post rots or becomes otherwise injured the top post and socket can be readily taken off and a new ground'post substituted for the old one; or, if the top post becomes injured, it can readily be exchanged for another without disturbing the ground-post.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The triple socket B, constructed substantially as shown and described for fencing or other PLHPOSQS, as set forth.
2. The combination of the ground-post A, triple socket B, and fence-post G D E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of September, 1871.
WlLLIAM A. MIDDLETON.
