Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. REMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to washing or scrubbing machines, and more particularly to a machine of this character which may be operated with equal facility submerged in water or removed therefrom.
The invention has for its primary object to provide an improved washing machine embodying such features of construction that the articles being washed are readily accessible.
Another object is the provision of a washing machine embodying means for holding the articles being washed.
1V ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved washing machine, Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. at represents a bottom plan view of the upper hinged section of the machine removed, Fig. 5 represents an end elevation of the washing machine, illustrating the upper hinged part in elevated position, Fig. 6 represents a detail perspective view, partly in section, of a part of the hinged frame, illustrating the spring holder in detail. Fig. 7 represents a detail sectional view through one of the longitudinal members of the hinged frame of the machine, and Fig. 8 represents a transverse sectional view through the machine.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate like and corresponding parts through the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally the base or supporting frame of the washing machine, which includes longitudinal members 11 connected by transverse members 12, which latter constitute supports for a plurality of longitudinal supporting members 15 for the lower and rela tively stationary scrubbing element 13, which latter is preferably formed of a corrugated sheet of metal having its ends secured in the grooves 1 1 formed longitudinally in the transverse members 12.
An upper frame, designated generally by the numeral 16 is of substantially rectanguto be advanced thereon to engage the upper surfaces of the angular plates 22 to clamp the upper and lower frames together. A hook 24 is pivotally secured at 25 to the other longitudinal member 11 of the lower frame and each face thereof is adapted to engage in one of a plurality of apertures 26 formed in a plate 27 secured in vertical position to the corresponding longitudinal member 17 of the upper hinged frame 16.
A guide frame consisting of a pair of 1on gitudinal members 28 and transverse connectin'g members 29 15 mounted for vertical movement within the upper hinged frame 16 and is normally held in downwardly extend ing position by the tension of a plurality of springs 30 engaged at their lower ends with the longitudinal members 28 and at their upper ends with the under surfaces of corner plates 31 connecting the adjacent ends of the longitudinal and transverse members 17 and 18 respectively, of the hinged frame 16.
A reciprocable frame 32 carrying the rela-' tively movable scrubbing element 33 is mounted for longitudinal movement in the frame 16 below the sides 28 and is provided with angular straps 34 engaging and inclosing the inner and longitudinal edges of the guides 28. The central longitudinal member 35 of the reciprocable frame 32 is connected by a pitman 36 with the crank pin 37 of a crank shaft 38 on which is keyed a pinion 39. The shaft 38 is rotatably supported in bearing members 40 secured to one end or transverse member 18 of the upper hinged frame, and the pinion 39 meshes with a pinion 41 keyed upon a shaft 42 carrying a hand crank 43, whereby the shaft may be manually operated.
4 Spring article holders or clamps carried by the end or transverse member 18 of the hinged frame 16, and each holder or clamp is substantially U-shaped and preferably formed of a piece of spring wire. Each U-shaped holder straddles one end member of the frame 16 and includes a transverse member 45 adapted to engage the lower edge. of the adjacent transverse member 18 of the hinged frame, and a pair of longitudinal end members 46 and 47. The end member 47 is rigidly secured, as at 48, in
' the hinged frame member 18, while the end member 46is coiled as at 49 and secured as at 50 in the frame member 18. A. pin 51 is secured in the'frame member 18 and is engaged with the coil 49 so as to increase the tension thereof and normally retain the transverse member in engagement with the lower edge of the frame member 18.
In operatlon, the article to be washed is slipped betweenthe holders or clamps 44 and is thus secured against longitudinal movement within the washing machine. The clamps or holders further insure against ejection of the articles being washed due to the reciprocatory movement of the reciprocable scrubbing element 33. The upper hinged frame 16 may be adjusted to accommodate articles of varying thicknesses, by properly adjusting the hook 24 in any one of the several apertures 26 and also by adj usting the nuts22 on the hinge bolts 20.

A washing machine including a supporting frame, a relatively stationary scrubbing element arranged in said frame, an upper frame arranged above and adjustably connected to said supporting frame, a sliding scrubbing element arranged in said upper frame, means carried by the upper frame and cooperating with the sliding element for moving the same, and means carried by the bottom frame cooperating with the upper frame for holding the same in its adjusted position.
3. A washing machine including a lower or supporting frame, a scrubbing element arranged therein, an upper frame arranged above and adjustably connected to said supporting frame, cover plates secured to the upper frame, a relatively movable scrubbing element movable vertically and longitudinally within the upper frame, a guide frame arranged in the upper frame, and supporting the movable scrubbing element, and springs connected to the guides and cover plates permitting the movement of the movable scrubbing element vertically in the upper frame.
