GARMENT-FASTENING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ANNA M. CORDINGLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.

' My invention relates to garment fastenings commonly known as hooks and eyes, the improvements residing more particularly II] the construction of the hook-member of the fastening.

The principal object of the present invention resides in the provision of a garment hook of novel, compact construction, which is bent in a simple and effective manner of a single length of wire to provide an auxiliary fastening loop at the forward end of the hook, an arched shank and a transverse guard which in conjunction with the shank prevents accidental displacement of the eyemember of the fastening, the auxiliary loop and the guard being resilient to permit of flexing of the hook during body movements, and to prevent at the same time its separationfrom the eye-member with which it engages.

An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which,

The eye -member 3 is preferably made with triangular fastening loops 5 at the ex tremities of a reotangularly bent body-portion 6. The hook-member of the garmentfastening is formed of a single continuous length of wire and includes in its construction a shank composed of parallel side members 7 and an intermediate arched locking member 8, a bill 9 formed by bending the doubled wire at the ends of the outer members of the shank rearwardly, triangular Specification of Letters Patent.

fastening loops 10 at the rear end of the shank, and a transverse guard 12 and an auxiliary angular fastening-loop 13 at the front end of the same, which are produced by bending the free end-portion of the middle or looking member 8 of the shank. The fastening loops are made angular to prevent slipping of the device within the threads which are applied at the angles of the loops as indicated by broken lines 14 in Fig. 1. The locking member of the shank is arched to provide two

15 and 16 of different altitudes the lowest of which is adjacent the eye-engaging bend 17 of the bill. The forward end-portion of the look ing member is bent first to provide the auxiliary angular fastening loop 13 the greater portion of which extends centrally beneath the forward end of the hook, and then transversely forward of the lower hump and rearward of the eye-engaging bend 17, to provide a recess 18 in which the eye-member is received.

The hook member is formed of a single, continuous length of wire as follows: After the wire has been doubled to provide the side-members of the bill and shank, it is bent upon itself to produce the bill and the outer members of the shank which are connected by the hook-engaging bend 17; one of the ends of the wire is bent in triangular shape to provide one of the thread loops 10 at the end of one of the outer members of the shank and the portion of the wire at the corresponding end of the other outer member of the shank is bent in similar shape to produce the other thread loop 10 and is thence passed between the outer members of the shank toward the forward end of the hook at which point it is bent to provide the auxiliary thread-loop 13 and the transverse guard 12, as hereinbefore described, the middle member of the shank having been previously curved to provide the

The simplicity of the construction of my improved garment-hook as hereinbefore described, makes it possible to produce the article at a low cost with forming devices free from the intricacies usually found inmachines used for this purpose.

The advantages of the use of the double hump, the transverse lock-guard, and the auxiliary fastening loop, will be readily understood, it being observed that the resiliency of the end-portion of the wire from which the auxiliary loop and the guard are formed, permits of a bending of the hook in conformity with body-movements, .without gaping of the garment at its lapping edges, and without loosening the hook from the garment, while the same flexibility will cause the guard to move to a more obstructive position with relation to the eye-member whenever by movement of the body the parts of the fastening are bent with relation to each other.

The hump nearest the forward end of the hook, being disposed beneath a portion of the bill of a comparatively small degree of flexibility, is made lower than the other hook and aids in locking the eye-member against rearward displacement while at the same time it determines the operative position. of the transverse guard.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. A garment hook composed of a single continuous length of wire bent to provide a shank and a bill connected by an eye-engaging bend, the shank having between two outer members, a locking-member the forward end-portion of which is bent to provide an auxiliary fastening-loop disposed below and partially forwardly of the eyeengaging bend and terminating in a guard which extends loosely across the members of the shank and the spaces between the same. I

2. A garment hook composed of a single continuous length of wire bent to provide a shank and a bill connected by an eye-engaging bend, the shank having between two outer members, a locking-member the forward-end portion of which is bent to provide an auxiliary fastening-loop disposed below the eye-engaging bend and terminating in a guard which extends loosely across the members of the shank and the spaces between the same.

A garment hook composed of a single continuous length of wire bent to provide a shank and a bill connected by an eye-engaging bend, the shank having between two outer members, a locking member the forward end-portion of which is bent to pro vide an auxiliary fastening-loop, and said locking-member having adjacent the eyeengaging bend a low hump and at a point farther remote from said bend, a hump of greater altitude.

l. A garment hook composed of a single continuous length of wire bent to provide a shank and a bill connected by an eyeengaging bend, the shank having between two outer members, a locking member the forward end-portion of which is bent into an auxiliary fastening loop provided with thread-receiving angles.
