To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. "Wnissnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, inthe county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Cement-Block Mold, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molds for cement blocks, and consists in the novel features-of construction and operation of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a mold of simple construction for use in forming blocks of cementitious material for building purposes, in which field stones or boulders of varying shapes and sizes may be embedded to project from the face of the block in a manner to produce an effect, when laid up, similar to that of a cobble stone wall, and wherein the wall of the mold forming the face of the block is rendered self-conforming to the irregular surfaces of the protruding portions of the stones in a manner to establish a definite parting line about the projecting portions of the stones irrespective of their size or shape and to effect the required projection thereof upon the face of the block; to provide for the ready discharge of the block from the mold in its finished form, and to enable the successive molding of stone em bedded blocks of varying face formations within a single mold.
In attaining the above object, the invention contemplates the employment in connection with a suitable flask or mold in which the stones are placed preparatory to being embedded in cement in the operation of molding the block, of a chambered wall for the face of the mold'adapted for connection with a source of water pressure and having a flexible inner wall or diaphragm for supporting the face of the block to be molded, which is caused by the pressure of water admitted to the chamber to distend between and conform with and embrace the adjacent portions of the stones within the flask, thus forming a pliable match wall for establishing a parting line bisecting the projecting portions of the stones and which will resist the pressure of the cement when forced into the mold to embed the stones in a manner to form the face of the block with the exposed portions of the stones in relief thereon.

Referring to the parts of the device by the characters of reference marked on the drawings, as shown in Fig. 1, 1 designates the base plate of the mold upon the face of which is mounted two vertical end walls 2 abutting at one end each against the face at opposite ends of a vertical side wall 3, and constituting three of the confining walls of the mold which is preferably rectangular in form. These walls may be removably or fixedly secured upon the base plate in any suitable manner to retain them in position. A top plate 4: for closing the mold is provided at opposite ends with projecting studs 5 for engagement with latch levers 6 pivoted to the end walls 2 of the mold to detachably secure said plate thereon.
I The side of the mold for forming the finished or weather face of the block, in which the stones are embedded in relief, consists of a hollow or recessed wall 7 having formed around its open side a laterally projecting flange 8, between the outer face of which and a binding frame 9 the marginal edges of a flexible diaphragm 10, preferably of sheet rubber, is fixedly secured by bolts or screws 11 for binding the meeting parts together. By this means a closed chamber 12 is formed within the wall 7, of which the flexible diaphragm constitutes one of the walls and is adapted to flex and distend under the pressure of water admitted to said chamber, and to be sustained therebyagainst reflex action. Water may be delivered to and discharged from the chamber 12 through 'an ordinary two-way valve 18 connected by a nipple 14 with said chamber and controlling an outlet having a discharge pipe 15 and an inlet passage communicating with a feed pipe 16, the latter being adapted for connectionv with a source of water supply under pressure (not shown). See Fig. 1.

The opposite ends of these rods are received respectively in forked extensions 20 formed on the ends of the wall 3 and are provided with eccentric levers 21 pivoted to swing into engagement with said extensions to exert tension longitudinally on said rods and draw the frame 9 of the chambered wall 7 into close fitting contact with the engaging edges of the walls of the mold about the open face thereof. When the parts of the mold are assembled in the abovemanner, and before the top plate 1 is placed in position, the stones, as indicated at 22, to be embedded in the block to be molded, may be placed within the mold and distributed therein as may be desired, care being required only to position such stones as are to :be embodied in the weather face of the block in line adjacent the inner face of the diaphragm and to support these stones against inward displacement by interposing or filling in stones between them and the walls of the mold. Water under pressure is then admitted through the valve 13 to-the chamber 12, and the pressure exerted thereby upon the flexible partition 01'' diaphragm 10 causes it to distend between and collapse upon and embrace portions of the bodies of the adjacent stones, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The extent of the deflection of the diaphragm and the consequent projection of the stones upon the face of the block'may be regulated by the pressure of the Water admitted to the chamber, and when this has been determined the top plate l of the mold is placed in position and secured by the latch levers 6, when the mold will be ready to receive the cement or other plastic material for embodying the stones and forming the block.
As a means for introducing the cement under pressure into the mold to insure its distribution about the stones and against thewalls thereof, and also to provide for coring out portions of the body of the block, cylindrical spouts or hollow cores 23 are inserted through close fitting apertures in the top plate 4 and rest at their lower ends within. the mold upon the base plate 1. These hollow cores may be connected by branches 24 with a feed pipe 25 through which the cement mixture in a plastic state is delivered to said cores, and each of the cores is provided with a plunger head 26 having a handle 27 by which it may be reciprocated to tamp or force the plastic cement into the mold. The side walls of the cores near their lower ends are provided with a series of elongated outlet apertures 28, at the bottom of which the core is closed by a head 29 having inwardly extending opposed inclined walls 30 which direct the discharge of the cement in opposite directions through said apertures, and assists in distributing it uniformly about the stones and walls throughout the mold. The flexible wall or diaphragm being sustained by the water pressure, which is practically non-compressible, will maintain a tight joint about the embraced portions of the stones, preventing the cement from entering therebetween.
When the mold has been filled, the cores may be withdrawn and the portions of coment remaining in the outlet apertures 28 will be sheared oil by the walls of the core at the bottom of said apertures, leaving cored openings 31 through the body of the block 32 when formed, as shown in Fig. 4c. The flexible diaphragm, when relieved of pressure by the discharge of the water through the outlet of the valve, will readily reflex, owing to its elasticity, and withdraw from the face of the block, leaving the engaged portions of the stones in relief thereon. By disengaging the eccentric levers the chambered wall may be removed fromthe mold, and upon releasing the latch levers and removing the top plate the finished block as shown in Fig. 4 may be discharged from the mold.
It is obvious that the chambered wall carrying the flexible diaphragm may be employed to constituteone or more of the confining walls of the mold, as may be desired, to enable the molding of blocks with as many corresponding stone exposed faces, and the invention is presented as including all such modifications and changes in the structural features as properly come within the scope and meaning of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A mold of the class described, comprising a mold body composed of inclosing walls, a chamber in one of said walls, a flexible diaphragm dividing said chamber from the interior of said mold, means for admitting fluid pressure to said chamber to flex and support said diaphragm, and means for admitting plastic material to the interior of said mold.
2. A mold of the class described comprising a mold body composed of confining walls and open upon one side thereof, a chambered wall for closing the open side of said mold body, a flexible dividing partition interposed between the open side of said mold body and said chambered wall and closing the chamber therein, means for admitting hydraulic pressure to said chamber to flex and sustain said diaphragm, and means for introducing plastic material to the interior of said mold.
3. A mold of the class described comprising a hollow mold body having an opening therein, a chambered wall having a flexible diaphragm secured thereto and closing the chamber therein, means for detachably securing said diaphragm over the opening in the body of said mold, means for admitting fluid pressure to said chamber to distend and support said diaphragm, and means for introducing plastic material under pressure to the interior of said mold. 4. A mold of the class described comprising a casing having an opening in the side wall thereof, a recessed wall for closing said opening, a flexible diaphragm secured over the recess in said wall and forming the inclosing wall of a chamber therein, clamping means engageable with said recessed wall and with said casing for securing said diaphragm thereon over said opening, a valve controlled fluid pressure inlet and outlet passage communicating with said chamber, and an inlet opening in said casing to admit plastic material to the interior thereof.
5. A mold of the class described comprising inclosing walls forming a casing having an aperture therein, a hollow core removably insertible at one end through said aperture into said casing, a recess in the inner wall of said casing, a flexible diaphragm extending over said recess and forming a closed chamber therein, means for delivering fluid pressure to and from said chamber to support and release said diaphragm, and means for feeding plastic material through said hollow core to the interior of said casing.
6. In a mold for forming cement blocks having stones embedded in the face thereof, an open casing for containing the stones, a closure for said casing, a flexible diaphragm dividing the interior of said casing and forming a closed chamber upon one side thereof, means for admitting fluid pressure to said chamber to collapse said diaphragm upon adjacent portions of said stones within the casing, and means for introducing plastic material under pressure to embed the remaining portions of said stones within said casing.
