- New York city, in the county of New York riphery thereof, and to provide fastein and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fun niture-Casters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in sliding casters or shoes for chairs and other furniture.

The main object of this invention is to provide a. simple, durable, economical and efiicient sliding caster adapted to be hammered into the lower end of the furniture leg and rigidly and securely llQlO. in position.

A further object of the invention is to dispense with the use of casters heretofore extensively used, which casters are shown with legs projecting from the outer means projecting from Within the outer perimeter of the caster, said fastening means being firmly and per mently secured to the solid or body portion of the caster.

Anotherv object of this invention is to fur- -nish a solid bearing surface for the furniture leg throughout the entire area of the caster, and at the-same time. provide a solid bearing surface constituting a backing support for the fastening prongs or spurs while being driven into the wood.

A still further object of the invention is to construct a caster having a body portion consisting of a hardened sdlid metal adapted to withstand friction with a flooring made of stone or tiling, thereby materially increasing the longevity of the caster.

The foregoing and such other objects as may occur from the ensuing description are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and; in. which Figure 1, is a transverse sectional "view of the improvement embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a plan view of a metal blank from which the fastening means shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is formed. Fig. 4:, is a plan View showing a. slight modification of the body portion with the fastening means omitted.

construction of the caster shown in Figs. and 2, the numeral 1 represents the body portion made of solid metal having a con vexed lower surface or face and a flat upper surface or back, the upper peripheral portion being provided with an inwardly projecting annular flange 2 adapted to overlap the outer end portions of the securing or fastening member 3, thereby firmly holding said member between the overhanging flange 2 and the upper surface or back of the bodv portion. As shown the said fastening meniher 3, is formed from any suitable metal possessing the necessary strength and is provided within its periphery with four in tegral projecting fastening prongs or spurs l, and when the said parts are thus assembled together constituting a complete caster, the completed article is subjected to a hardening process thereby forming a solid body portion of specially hardened steel.

Fig. 4- shows the overhanging annular flange 2 of the body portion provided with four notches or recesses adapted to receive the outer end portions of the fastening memher 3, when by turning said member either to the right or left it will be securely held in position between said annular flange and the upper flat face of the body portion. If desired the overhanging sections of the flange 2, shown in Fig. 4, may be pressed down in any suitable manner over the flat arms that arry the fastening spurs 4, in order to rig idly secure the fastening means to the upper face of the body portion 1.

It will be understood that after the caster securing means is placed on the. upper sur face of the body portion in its proper position the annular flange 2 is pressed. down on the upper surface of the }')61lpl1(313l portion of said securing in ans and caused to assume a position in a horizontal plane with the upper surface of the said body portion thereby firmly and rigidly fastening the caster thereof, and that each of said fastening prongs is located Within the perimeter of the fasteningmember and the body portion of the caster.

It is desirable that the edges of the fastening prongs or spurs be serrated or provided with notches so that the caster may be held rigidly in placeby the Wood forcing itself into the irregular shape that may be preferred.

Having thus described my invention What I claim and desire .to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. A furniture caster comprising a hardened solid metallic body portion having a convex lower bearing surface and an upper fiat surface, a fastening member having a flat base portion resting on the flat surface of the body portion, and a plurality of integral securing prongs at right angles to each other projecting from Within the perimeter thereof, said body portion having an overhanging annular flange pressed down over the peripheral portion of said fastening member in convex lower bearing a horizontal plane parallel With the npper surface of the body portion.

2. A furniture caster comprising a hardtried solid metallic body portion having a surface and an upper flat surface, a fastening member provided with a plurality of integral securing prongs arranged at right angles toeacl'i other and resting against the upper flat surface of the body portion, said body portion having an inwardly projecting annular flange provided with a plurality of recesses adapted tore} ceive the peripheral portions of the fastening member when by turning said member to the right or left it will the overlapping sections of .said annular flange and the flat surface of the body portion.
