Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led January 29,1916. Serial No. 75,082.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT L. EDLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at ban Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain-Traps; and I do hereby declare the following to be .a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same. j
This invention relates .to yimprovements in drain traps designed for-use in connection with sinks, wash `basins and the like, al-
though it is not necessarily limited to such use.
The invention has for its primary object to provide a trap of simple and inexpensiveY construction, which shall be readily accessible for cleaning and being of such construction as to permit of the quick and convenient removal of any of the internal parts thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed ing, in which: j i
Figure 1 represents a ,front elevation of the improved trap, Fig. 2 represents a front elevation thereof, the cover or front plate being removed, Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 represents a top plan view of the tra-p, and Fig. 5 represents an enlargedl detail perspective view of one of the baffle plates removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 8 indicates generally the body or casing of the trap, which includes side walls 9, a rear wall'10, a bottomll and top 12, having an endless rectangular recess 13 formed in the front edges thereof to receive the correspondingly shaped;` sealing rib 14 of the removable front plate 15 and the gasket 16. rI`he removable front `plate 15 is formed with pairs of laterally project ing ears 17, receiving the screw threaded terminals of bolts 18 having T heads 19 at one end thereof pivotally received within brackv ets 20 secured to the sides 9 of the body by screws or equivalent means 21. Wing nuts 22 are threaded upon the bolts 18 and are adapted to be advanced agairst the front plate 15 to rigidly clamp the latter in position upon the open front of the body 8.
The top 12 is formed adjacent one sideV wall 9 with an aperture receiving the lower portion of an inlet pipe 24, having an external annular flange 25 engaged in the enlarged outer end o f the openingin the top 142, and a gasket 26 is interposed between the edge of the opening and the collar or fiange 25 to insure against leakage of water. The inlet pipe 24 extends a distance into the body 8 and lis formed directly below the flange 25 with external'screw threads 27 on which is fitted a nut 28 adapted to be adpipe 24 and the exhaust or outlet pipe 29,
and is formed with an Vangular lower end 31 receiving screw or equivalent means 32, whereby the partition is secured in vertical position in the body 8. The upper extremity of the partition 30 terminates in spaced re lation to the top 12 and above the lower edge of the inlet pipe 24 and is provided with upwardly directed teeth 33 designed to prevent relatively large articles of refuse, and

the like, from passing from the chamber 34 at one side of the partition 30 to the chamber 39 at the opposite side thereof.
A. plurality of baffle plates 36 are formed with angular ends 37 secured by screws or equivalent means 33 alternately to the partition 30 and the adjacent side wall 9 of the chamber 35. As clearly illustrated in Fig.
f 2, the adjacent ends of the plates 36 overlap and thus cause the water or other fluid iiowing through the chamber 35 to take a circuitous course or path. The adjacent exn tremities of the baffle plate 36 are formed with upwardly directed teeth 39, designed te arrest the movement of articles of refuse and to prevent their accumulation about the upper end of the discharge or outlet pipe 29.'
A pair of supporting strips 40 are secured to @the bottom `l l1 within the chamber 35 and upon opposite sides 'of the outlet pipey 29 and support a strainer screen 4:1, which lat-A cleaning.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A trap including a hollow body, an inlet pipe secured in the top of said body and projecting downwardly into the latter, an outlet pipe securedv in the bottom of said body, a vertically disposed partition secured in said body dividing the lower portion ol' the latter into two chambers, and a plurality El ballle plates secured in one of said chamers.
2. A trap including a hollow body, anfinlet pipe secured in the top of said body and projecting into the latter, a partition arranged in said body, an outlet pipe connected with the bottom of said body and arranged upon the side of said partition opposite said inlet pipe, a plurality of horizontally disposed baille plates secured to one side wall of said body and said partition,
and a plurality of upwardly directed teeth carried by the upper edge of said partition and the inner extremities of said horizontally disposed baille plates.
3. A trap including a hollow body, an in-v let pipe secured in the top of said body and projecting a distance into the latter, an outlet pipe connected with the bottom of said body, a'vertically disposed partition extendthe upper edge of said partition and the l adjacent ends of said baille plates, and a screen movably supported in spaced relation above the upper extremity of the inlet pipe.
4. A trap comprising a hollow body including a removable front wall, an inlet pipe secured in the top of said body and projecting downwardly within thelatter, an outlet pipe connected' with the bottom of said trap, a vertically disposed partition eX- tending between the adjacent ends of said pipes and terminating above the lower edge of the inlet pipe, a plurality of staggeredly arrangedand horizontally disposed baille plates secured to said partition and one side wall of said body, a plurality of upwardly directed teeth carried by the upper edge of said partition and the inner extremities of said baille plates, and a screen removably supported above the upper extremity of the outlet pipe disposed between said partition and the side wall of said body and below said baile plates.
