Be it known that I, CHEs'rEn H. BEACH, citizen of the United States, residin at Racine, in the county of Racine and tate and useful Improvement in Sanitary Agitators for Drink-Mixers, of which the followmg is a full, clear, concise, and exact description. 1 A it My invention relates to improvements in power driven agitating devices such as are used for example for mixing or stirring beverages or the like. In prior devices of this general character, the agitator rod is rotated by an electric motor, and constitutes in effeet, a permanent part of the armature shaft. The agitrutor is raised and lowered either by raising and lowering the entire motor, or by sliding the agitator rod through the armature shaft, which, for this. purpose, is made tubular. in either case,

the same agitator rod is used.in' stirring the different liquids in allthe'various receptacles in which it is immersed successively, which feature has given rise to. objections from a sanitary standpoint.

The gei-ieral object of the present invention is to provide an agitator which permits of more sanitary methods inthe use thereof. A contributory object is to provide an agitator rod, the lower part of which is readily removable from the upper part whereby said lower part may be readily deached and rinsed after each operation, or, whereby it may be thrown away and a new one substituted for each operation.

Another object oi the invention is to provide an agitator. head or main agitating ele ment which may be operated at the very bottom of the receptacle thus insuring a complete circulation of the liquid and conseqnently thorough mixing.

A further object is to provide an agitator rod in two telescopic sections which latter are relatively adjustable to meet varying requirements.

- An additional object'is to provide an agitator rod with means for insuring against accidental withdrawal. thereof through the motor shaft, but which may be forcibly Withdrawn if desired. Other objects and advantages will appeal" from the following description without specific enumeration thereof.

1n the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of my invention in. conjunction with a motor having a tubular armature shaft in which the upper part of the agitator rod is slidable. The invention may .be embodied in other forms, however,- and. may be used with motorswhich' are moved bodily up and down, and, of course, with other types of driving means.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the form of device above mentioned, Fig. 2 is a section on the line.22 of Fig-l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the lowenpart of the agitator rod. Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation of the upper part thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line of Fig. 3.

The general organization consists preferably of a suitable base 1 'havinga standard 2 thereon carrying an electric motor 3 near the upper end thereof. Said motor is provided with a hollow armature shaft l which is supported by an enlargement or head ,5 on the upper end thereof, forming a shoulder, said head. having a plurality of recesses 6 therein, hereinafter referred to: Upward movement of the armature shaft is prevented by a cap 7-.

The agitator rod is made in two sections as, previously stated. For convenience, the upper section 8 may be called the spindle or driving rodand the lower removable section 9 may becalled the agitating element. The spindle 8 fits within the hollow arma ture shaft l and is slidable therein. The removable section 9 is provided with l a finger piece 15 at the upper ends thereof, which latter provides a flaring opening to guide the spindle, and is made preferably of insulating material, for example, hard rubber. At the lower end thereof, an enlargement or head 16 is provided, which when rotating, acts as an agitator and throws the liquid outwardly by centrifugal force, thereby insuring circulation thereof. Said head, which'is preferably square, is provided with a tgpering extension 17 adapted to rest against the bottom of the tumbler or other receptacle 18. This extension forms a pivotal support for. the removable section, which latter is atleast as long as the depth of the liquid to keep thefinger piece abovethe level of said'liquid. The head 16, being located near the bottom of the receptacle, the resulting circulation is very complete.

In using the device, the spindle 8 is raised so .as to permit the tumbler 18 to be placed beneath it, the section 9 having previously been dropped into the tumbler or held suspended in it by the finger piece. The spindle is then lowered into said section thereby frictionally engaging the latter, whereby the two rotate as one. After the stirring operation is-completed, the spindle is raised, may be lifted from the tumbler and cleaned before being used again. .The device is thus very sanitaryas it is an easier operation to clean said section after removing it from the spindle than to rinse and clean the lower end of the spindle where the agitator rod is a one-piece construction. The sanitary feature may be further carried out by making said removable sections of some inexpensive material whereby they may be thrown away after using them once.

Having thus described my invention What claim as new and desire to secure by Let tcrs Patent of the United States is:

1. The combination with a suitable support, of an electric motor mounted thereon with its shaft vertical, an "agitator constitilting a separateelement readily detachable fromsaid shaft but arranged to be rotated thereby, and means for raising and lowering said shaft to facilitate attachment and removal of said agitator.

In an agitator, the combination with a standard having means for holding a tumbler, of an electric motor supportedthereby havinga vertical armature shaft, an agitator rod associated with said shaft, said rod accidentally lifted enbeing made in two detachable secticirs, the lower of which is arranged to extend to the lower partof said tumbler and means for elevating the upper of said sections, whereby the lower one may be removed after each operation.

3. In an agitator, the combination with an electric motor having a vertically disposed tubular armature shaft, of a longitudinally movable'vertical agitator rod loosely inclosed by said shaft and provided near its upper end with means whereby the rod maybe coupled to said armature shaft, the lower end of said agitator rod being detachable from the upper end thereof where by it may be readily removed therefrom and cleaned.

4. In an agitator, the combination with an electric motor having a tubular armature shaft with a spindle passing loosely therethrough, an extension having telescopic engagement with the lower part of said spindle andmeans and with said tubular armature shaft to positively drive said spindle.

In an agitator, the combination with an electric motor mounted above a suitable base, a tubular armature shaft therefor at a height sufiicient to permit a liuid receptacle to be placed on said base beneath said shaft, a slidable spindlecarried by said armature shaft and arranged to be lifted until its lower end clears said receptacle, and an agitator element substantially. as long as said receptacle arranged to rest on the bottom thereof and be connected to said spindle whereby it may be driven thereby when said spindle is lowered.
