' To all whom it may concern: a
. Be it known that I, GUSTAV J. E. STEUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2625 Bellefontaine avenue, Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri,
. have invented new and useful Improvements in Miter-Clamps, of which the following is a specification- This invention relates to a clamp which may be applied to the sections of a miter for holding said sections in mitered relation irrespective of the miter or length of the sections.
The primary object of the invention is to opposite directions to separate the joint suificiently far to enable glue to be placed upon the side edges thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide clamping arms for the clamp so constructed that they may be connected with the attaching bars of the clamp after the same have been applied to the respective sections of the miter. v
A still further object of the invention is to provide the clamp with L-shaped supporting members having grooved ends which may be arranged to receive the attaching bars of the clamp after said bars have been secured to the respective sections of the miter to prevent the sagging of said bars when the clamping'arms of the clamp are in clamping engagement with the sections of the miter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the clamp with attaching bars having rabbeted side edges which are recessed at intervals throughout the length of said barsto enable the spacing members,
- clamping arms and the supporting bars to be engaged with the attaching bars after the same have been applied and clamped to the respective'sections of the miter.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be herein after described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred form of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to. theprecise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when so desired.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of theimproved clamp show ing the same applied to a miter, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 2+2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 to better illustrate the construction of the clamping arms. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 to more clearly illustrate the construction of the supporting members used in connection with the clamp, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one of the attaching bars of the clamp showing the same removed from themiter and having the spacing members, clamping arms and supporting mem sponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing in which "the numeral 1 designates the sections of the miter which are joined, as at 2 to complete the miter joint.
Arranged upon opposite sides of the sections 1 are attaching members 3, each comprising a bar 4 having rabbeted side edges 5 which, are provided at spaced intervals throughout the length of the bar with notches 6 while slidably mounted upon the bars 4 are sleeves 7.
The sleeves 7 are shaped to-correspond to the shape of the bars 4 which they encircle and have a portion thereof snugly fitting within the rabbeted portion of said bars, while depending from the under side of the sleeves and spaced therefrom for a greater portion of their length are arms 8 the free ends of which are provided with set screws 9. The sleeves 7 are recessed on their under side, as indicated at 10 so that, a portion of the bars 4 disposed in said sleeve will contact with the sections of the miter when the bars are positioned thereon with the ends of the sections disposed between the arms and the sleeves, thus it will be seen that when the set screws 9 are tightened one end thereof will bear against the under 'side of said sections and force the same into contact with the bars thus holding the bars positioned upon the sections and the sleeves securely clamped between the bars.
Spacing members 11 are provided for connection with the bars 4: and each comprise a companion section 12 and 13, each of said sections having an "end' grooved to recelve the bars 4 with the side Walls of the grooves 5 recess-ed to snugly fit Within the grooves the rabbeted sides of sald bars, said grooves body ojt said members. l/Vhen the bars 4are v in clamping position upon the sections the offset ends of said members Will overlap and enable a stud 15 inthe end of the offset portion of-the member 13 to be positioned Within a groove in the end of a the offset portion of the section 12Whereby, the said sections are removably and hingefdly connected. Through the above described construction of the spacing members it Will be seen that When the sections thereof are applied to the clamping bars '4 the said bars may be-spaced a suitable distance from the mitered edge of the sections and then clamped to saidsecti'ons in such a manner as to cause'thestud lo-on the sections 13 to be positioned Within the grooves 16 inthe section 12 thus-enabling the sections of the miter to be swung apart a su'lficient distance to permit glue to be inserted upon the miterededgesof'said sections and upon swingingthe sections in the reverse directionthe mitered edges thereof will becaused to contact andheldin such relation through the connection of the spacing-members With *the attaching bars of the clamp. p In order thatthe sections of the miter may be held in contactingrelation until the glue sets clamping arms 17 are provided each of which comprises companion sections 18 and 19 and each'section of the clamping'arms has an end provid'ed'with' a groove similar to the groove in the end of the spacing members "and designated by the numeral 20. After the glue has been spread npon the miteredkfaces of said sections the sections may again be swungto position which will causethe mitered' fa-ces of said sectionsto contact and-sections 18 i and 19 of the clamping arms 17 connected Withthe barse by means of the recesses 6, said sections being sli'd longitudinally of the bars between thenotches or recesses'until a point is reached Where it is desired to apply pressureto the miter joints by means of the clamping arms. The set screws 22 are novv tightened so that the ends 01"? the screws bear in the grooves 20 in the sections '19 thus forcing the clamping arm sections in clamping engagement With the miter sections. It will of course be understood" that any number of clamping arms may be employed for this purpose as found desirable and that if the miter sectionsare of considerable length a suificient number of supporting members may'be connected with the bars by engaging the grooved ends er saidmembers with the barsby means of the recesses '6.
From the above statement itWill be seen that the spacing members ll spacethe bars porting members prevent the spreading or sagging of the bars 4 when the clamping arms are in clamping engagement with the miter sections, thus insuring a perfect joint at the meeting faces of the miter sections.
It will be further noted that by providing the bars 4 with the alined recesses 6 in the side edges thereof and providing the sections of the clamping arms and spacing members with grooves snugly receiving the bars 4 the said spacing members and clamping arms and also the supporting members may be applied or detached from the bars 4 after the same have been positioned upon the miter sections.
- From the foregoing statements taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is at once apparent that a miter clamp has been provided, which is inexpensive of manufacture, simple in construction and highly efficient in use.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A miter clamp comprising attaching bars, hingedly connected spacing members removably mounted upon the bars, clamping arms detachably connected with said bars and mounted to slide thereon, and supporting members having grooved ends slidably engaged with said bars.
2. A miter clamp comprising hinged spacing members having grooved ends, bars hav ing rabbeted side edges snugly fitting in the grooved ends of the spacing members, clamping arms removably and slidably mounted upon said bars, L-shaped supporting members carried by said bars, sleeves mounted to slide on said bars, arms on said sleeves, and clamping elements carried by said arms.
3. A miter clamp having bars provided with rabbeted side edges and recessed at intervals throughout the length of the bars, sleeves mounted to slide on said bars, clamping elements carried by the sleeves, spacing members having grooved ends for connection with the bars, offset portions upon the spacing members, and means for hingedly connecting the offset portions of said members.
4. A miter clamp having bars provided with rabbeted side edges recessed at intervals throughout the length of the bars, clamping means removably mounted upon the bars, spacing members having sections carried by the respective bars and provided with overlapping ends, the sections of the spacing members upon one of said bars having grooves, and studs upon the overlapping ends of the sections upon the other bar adapted to fit in the grooves in the ends of the first mentioned sections.
5. A miter clamp having bars provided with rabbeted side edges provided at intervals throughout the length of the bars with alined recesses, clamping arms comprising.
sections having grooved ends removably connected with the respective bars, fingers upon the sections upon one of said'bars, and clamping screws carried in the ends of said fingers and adapted to contact with the sections upon the other bar whereby, the clamping arms are held in clamping position.
6. A miter clamp having spacing members each including hingedly connected companion sections having grooves in the ends thereof provided with rabbeted side walls, clamping members each comprising companion sections having grooved ends provided with rabbeted side walls, clamping bars having channeled side edges adapted to fit snugly within the grooves in the sections of the spacing members and clamping arms, said side walls of the bars being provided with recesses at spaced intervals whereby, the sections of the spacing members and clamping arms may be removed therefrom when said bars are in clamping position.
