. GOLF-CLUB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES -United States, residing at New York city, in 5 the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. r This inventionrelates to golf clubs and more particularly to that form" of club known as a putter since it isin connection with such a club that the invention may be used to especial advantage.
One of the objects of the in produce. a golf club so constructed as to permit its grip or handle to be adjusted 2o to any desired degree, thereby contributing to greater ease tion. v
A further object is to produce a club possessing the above characteristics .in which while only a simple bending operation necessary to render the-grip" of the/club suitable" to the individual player, the grip possesses sufficient rigidity to withstand the usage of play without bending. v
I Other featuresof theinvention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out here- 1na er.
and accuracy, of manipulaconstruction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts whlch will be exemplified tin-the construction hereinafter set; forth, 'and'the scope. of, the application of which will be indicated In thefo1low ing j claims. 1 In' the drawing, in which is shown one of the'embodiments of the several features of ourinventiom Figure 1 is. a front elevation of a golf club showing the handsin position 'onthe grip. Fig 2 is asimilar view of the 3 .18 a v ew partly in se ctilon showin o t e grip.

' 5 comprisesa metal core 6 preferably formed of seamless, steel tubing, thus providing at one endsa socket 7,-to:fit over the upper end of the shaft 4 -to which it is attached inany 6a convenient manner. At its-outer end the core also formsfa socket '8 into which may --be placeda cap 9 to give a finished appearance to the'club. Betwe'en the sockets the core'is formed with a constricted, portion -10 which should be of suflicient rigidity to retain the socket portions in normally fixed relationship to each other while at the 'same time permitting their relationship to be altered at the will of the userby a sim-- ple bending operation. The constricted por-' tion 10 is preferably formed of diminishing thickness in the direction shown, but of substantially the same Width as the remaining portions of the core in a direction at right angles thereto. This arrangement per mits-bending of the grip 5 in the plane in which the head 2 lies, but offers considerable resistance to-bending out "of this plan'e thus preventing any tendency to bend during use of the club. m
Rubber slugs ll'are provided which fit "into the indentations-about the constricted, portion 10, in orderto provide a grip of" uniform diameter throughout."
have 'goresjcut therein as at 12 to facilitate the bending of theirubber as the'angle of the. grip is changed, as shown in Fi .-2. The entire grip may be bound with leather,,rub-'Q j ber, or: other material ,as is customary in devices of this character. I v H I 'It 'will :be seenfron'ilftheiahwe described construction that agolf cluhjis; provided in. [whichf thegrip. orf handl e thereof may be ';readily adjusted 'to nieeti the needs of -the user. The grip has been shownas'noianall y: bent at an angleof' approximately 45 de. grees; so as togive thegreatest bending facilityynot'" only" back tothe-perpendicular butf to. an; an there iiirementsof the individual playen' It ei'understood, however, 'that the grip maybe manufactured jwith its two sockets in a straight line; to be'later bent to. any 'dee\ ,"sired degreeby a user. j It will'thereforehe 1 seen that there is provided a device 'well adapted to accomplish, among others, all of the ends and objects hereinbefore set forth in an exceedingly rsiniple and efiicient man I -ner,'-and that structurally considered th-110 deviceis ofthe greatest ossible simplicity; which the naturethemo gle of 5 @90 degrees according to 1 00.,
will permit, and
is well adapted to be made at a minimum of cost and to be readily assembled into a neat and compact arrangement for accom plishing the, purposes intended.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierentembodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it isintended that all matter contained in the above description orshown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described our invention, what We claim as new and desire tofsecure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a head, a shaft secured to said head, and. a grip secured to said shaft, said grip compris ng a plurality of tubular members, a constricted pliable portion therebetween, filling members surrounding said constricted portion and a binder around said tubular members and said filling members.
mediate its length, whereby it may be bent at any angle to the line of said shaft.
4. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a head, and a handle associated with said head, the upper partof said handle adjacent the end thereof'being adapted to be bent at will at an angle to the line of the handle.
v 5. A golf club provided with a pliable handle;
6. A golf club provided with a head and anon-resilient handle pliable in a direction parallel to said head and relatively rigid in a direction at.right angles to said head.
7. A golf club having a shaft with a head on one end and a handle on the other end angularly adjustable with respect to said shaft in a direction parallel to said head. 8. A handle for a golf club comprising a plurality of tubular members, a constricted portion between said members so formed as to permit relatively easy bendingof said handle in one plane, while preventing bending of said handle in other planes, and filling members adjacent said constricted portion for maintaining the diameter of said handle relatively constant throughout its length.
In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
