- catine and State of Iowa, have invented 'cer= tainnew and useful Improvements in. Ver- 'min-Traps; and I do declare the following to be-a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains: to make and use thesame. v
This invention relates generally to improvements in traps and moreparticularly to vermin traps to be used'inhen'houses and the like.
One object of the invention is toprovide a receptacle adapted toinduce vermin to inhabit the same and from which they may be caught and killed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vermin trap which can beeasilyand conveniently attached to a perch or the like in hen houses wherein it is known that vermin breed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture, efficient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with this invention showing it applied to use in connection with a perch of a hen house; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the plane of the line 4-4 of Fig. 6; Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the plane of the line 5 5 of Fig. 6; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the base member of this improved device; and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of the line 7'? of Fig. 6.
Although this invention may be constructed practically in a number of ways, the preferred form and the one which is herein illustrated, comprises a rectangular shaped base made from fir wood. The upper face of this base. 1 is provided with a plurality of concavities or concaved recesses '2'wh1ch are arranged in longitudinal aline- 'ment mldway' of the width of said base.
Communicating with the opposite edges of these recesses 2 are shallow grooves 3, the
bottoms ofwhich slant towardsaid recesses 2. These grooves 3 extend the'entire length "ofthebztsel and-are flared at their ends as at 3. Extending upwardly from the upper face ofthe basel near the side edges thereof and at theends thereof are pins 4:. Similar pins 5ext'end outwardly from the side edges of the base 1 nearthe ends thereof. Fitting over'the base 1 and'in contact with the pins 4 and 5 is a cover member composedof a fiat rectangular plate 6 which is of less length than that of said base, and extending downwardly from the side edges of this plate 6 adjacent the side edges of the base 1 are flanges 7. Thus it may be seen that the plate 6 and flanges 7 are spaced from the upper side and side edges respectively of the base 1.
In use, the device is positioned under the perch 8 of a hen house, the upper face of the plate 6 contacting with the lower face of the perch 8, and secured thereto in any convenient manner, here shown by means of a U-clamp 9, whichwill be understood without further description.
In operation, the vermin being attracted by the fir wood and being fond of dark secretious places, will crawl onto the ends of the base 1, which as hereinbefore described, extends beyond the ends of the cover 6, to form in effect, platforms, from whence they crawl under the cover along the grooves 3 into the recesses 2 wherein they form their domicile. Others may crawl up the side edges of the base 1 and onto the upper face thereof and then into the aforesaid recesses 2.
When desired, the base and cover is de tached and the vermin contained therein are removed and killed in any convenient manner.
From theforegoing, it may be seen that the objects of the invention have been effectively carried out, a very simple and eflicient device having been provided which not only may be used in the manner herein described, but which may be used to catch any kind of insects which secret themselves in crevicesand places from which it is diflicult to dislodge them."
As various minor changes in form and proportion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construc tion herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. trap-of the class described comprising a base having a plurality of recesses in its upper face, a cover for said base, flanges extending from the side edges of said cover and adjacent the side edges of said base,
and pins extending outwardly from the upper face and side edges of said base, said pinsspacing said cover and said flanges from the upper face and side edges respectively of said base. 7
2. A trap of the cla-ss described comprising a rectangular base having a plurality of re-v cesses in its upper face, a cover for said base, flanges extending downwardly from the side edges of said cover and adjacent theside edges of said base, pins extending upwardly from the upper face of said base} Copies of this patent may be obtained for near the side edges thereof and at the ends thereof, and additional pins extending outwardly from the side edges of said base at the ends thereof, said pins and said additional pins spacing said cover and said flanges from the upper face and side edges respectively of said base.
3. A trap of the class described comprising a rectangular base having a plurality of recesses in its upper face, said recesses being arranged in longitudinal alinement midway the width of said base, the upper face of said base being provided with longitudinally extending grooves communicating with said recesses, a cover for said base, flanges extending downwardly from the side edges of said cover, and spacing eleme nts for spacing said cover and said flanges from the upper face and side edges respectively of said base.
