T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CARL JosnPH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shade or Curtain Retainers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to an adjustable shade or curtain retainer, by means of which a shade can be located at any level of a window, and thereby any portion of said window can be shaded by the shade. The invention in this instance is shown with a window frame, and a hollow slat for the shade. The hollow Slat is the subject matter of my application for a patent for hollow slat for window shades, filed April 6, 1915, Serial Number 19,428.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the invention with a window frame and shade with its appurtenances; Fig. 2 shows a left hand side view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 represents an enlarged end view of the retainer; Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 4 on the line 5, 5 with a portion broken away; Fig. 6 shows a view similar to Fig. 4 modified; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary left hand side view of Fig. 6.

A window frame is indicated with the vertical members 20, 21, the top cross piece 22 and the window sill 25. A pair of brackets 26, 27 are fastened'to the top cross piece 22. A single pulley 28 with sheave 29 is suspended from the bracket 26 and a double pulley 30 with the sheaves 31 and 32 is suspended from the bracket 27. The adjustable shade or curtain retainer is shown to comprise a U-shaped hood with the end covers 36, 37 Thehood 35 and the end covers 36 and 37 are connected by the rods 38. Lugs 39 are formed with the said end covers, and screws 43 extend through the openings in said lugs and engage threaded openings in said hood. Bearing lugs 44 are formed with the end cover 36.

The end cover 36 has a central opening for a flanged roller 40, and a vertical slot 41 is formed in said end cover. The flanged roller has formed therein the slot 42 which extends from its axial center to the periphery thereof. A 4U-shaped wire 45 is pivoted in lugs 46 extending from the flanged roller 40. cated at 50 with the rectangular pin 51 and the pivot 52. The pin 51 is located in the slot 42 of the roller 40 and the pivot 52 is journaled in the end cover 37 vA shade 55 has one end fastened to the roller 50 and is indicated as partly wound around the said roller. A pocket ,56 is formed at the other end of the shade 55. Within the pocket 56 is located a hollow slat having the central portion 60. At the opposite ends of the central portion 60 are adjustably carried the adjustable pulley supports 68. A pulley 71 is journaled at the outer end of each pulley support 68. A bracket 72 with the clamping rollers 73 and 7 4 is fastened to the vertical member 2l, and the sill 25. An adjusting cord 75 has one end fastened to the sill 25, leads over one of the pulleys 71, eX- tends through the hollow slat and then leads over the second pulley 71, after which it is engaged by the clamping roller 73. A chain 80 has one end fastened to the end cover 36, leads over the sheave 29 of the single pulley 28, then leads over the sheave 32 of the double pulley 30. The chain 80 forms a loop 81 and returns over the sheave 31, and is then fastened to the end cover 37. A cord 82 has one end fastened to the loop 81 and leads under the clamping roller 74.

The U shaped hood 35 can be located in different levels by clamping the cord 82 in different positions with the clamping roller 74. By means of the cord 75 the shade 55 can be located in different positions with respect to the U shaped hood 35. By means of the hollow slat the shade when in its lowest position can be brought adjacent to sill 25.

In Figs. 6 and 7 the invention is modified by connecting to the end covers 36 and 37 pivots 85 on which are journaled rollers like 86, which can contact with the vertical members 20, 21 of the window frame, when the curtain roller is raised or lowered. The hood 35 is located at different levels by means of the cord 82, and the lower en'd of the shade is located at different levels by means of the cord 75. The combination of elements allow any portion of the window to be shaded. The hood 35 protects the shade 55 when the windows are being cleaned and prevents injury to the roller 50. To insert the roller 50 with its shade 55 into the hood 35, the roller 40 is turned by means of the U shaped wire 45, to bring the slot 42 din alinement with the Vertical slot 4l.

The pivot 52 is then inserted in its opening in the end cover 37, and the rectangular pin 51 is moved through the vertical slot 41 and entered into the slot 42 of the roller 40, and located in the aXial center of the roller l-O. Then the roller 0 is turned to bring the members of the U shaped wire 45 between the bearing lugs 44 of the end cover 36, and the roller 55 is held in operative position. The U shaped wire 45 also provides efficient means to wind up the spring (not shown) in the roller 50 to its requisite tension.

Having described mv invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and Claim is:
