SURGICAL SHEET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
Application filed January 4, 1915. Serial No. 444.
To all whom it mdy concern Be it known that I, WILLARD C. DAWES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Sheets;
and I do declare the following to be a full,
against slipping, without requiring any exertion or effort on the part of the user.
Another object is to provide a sheet with foot supports for use for obstetrical purposes.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of this improved sheet in use; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. A is a detail longitudinal section taken on the line 4-4 of. Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated a sheet 1 is shown which may be of any desired size and composed of any suitable material and which is designed to be placed under a patient in bed. This sheet 1 is provided on its upper face with stop members in the form of loops or pockets 2 and 3 which may be disposed at any desired position, being preferably arranged in transverse alinement, and at a point: convenient to receive the feet of the patient when drawn upward to hold his knees in bent position for supporting a book or for simply resting him by changing his position. As shown, these pockets 2 and 3 are disposed near the lower end of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
sheet but it is obvious that they may be arranged at any desired point and may be disposed either in alinement or otherwise, and that any desired number thereof may be em ployed to vary the position of the feet of the user so that he may draw them up to greater 'or less extent as desired and insert them in these pockets. As shown, these pockets are open at both ends tapering from their upper toward their lower ends and which are shown formed of strips having inclined side edges secured to the sheet 1, the length of the strip being longer than the distance between the points at which the ends are attached, so as to provide pouches to receive the feet without binding. While these pouches or pockets are shown open at their lower end, it is obvious that they may be closed if desired.
lVhile this sheet is especially designed for. bed patients for supporting the feet in withdrawn position to relieve or rest a patient, it is obvious that it may be used with beneficial results for obstetrical purposes to assist a woman during childbirth.
I claim as my invention: I
The herein described bed sheet for the use of invalids comprising a rectangular sheet of fabric of a size to receive a human body and to be held in position on a bed thereby, and foot supports comprising wedge-shaped strips of fabric arranged adjacent the lower corners of the sheet and on its upper surface, the converging edges of each wedge-shaped strip being stitched from end to end on the sheet on lines converging toward the lower endof the sheet thereby providing semi-frusto-conical shaped loops with their longitudinal centers parallel with the side edges of the sheet, said loops being of a size to permit the toes of the foot to extend therethrough, whereby the feet of the person lying on the sheet will be held fiat thereon and prevented from slipping.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
