To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. MANHIRE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaking and Control Mechanism for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to shaking and control mechanism for furnace grates, and has for its object to produce an efficient mechanism of the character outlined, embodying the desirable features of simplicity, strength, durability and inexpensiveness of construe tion.
Vith this general object in V16W' and others as hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a vertical section of a furnace grate embodying my invention, the section being taken on the line II of Fig. 2. Fig. i 2, is a top plan view of the grate with the greater part of one-half broken away. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of a rock frame forming an element of the machine. Fig. 4, is a detail perspective view of a rocker frame forming an element of the machine.

It is to understood that the mechanism forming the subject matter of this application may be used in connection with any suitable grate structure, and that I reserve the right to make all changes in detail construction, proportion, and arrangement of the parts, which properly fall within the scope of the claims forming a part of this specification.
Referring .to the drawing in detail, 1 is the front wall of a grate, 2 one of the side walls, the other being omitted, 3 a central channel bar extending longitudinally of the grate, and 4 transverse rocker bars, one set be ng journa at their inner ends in the Specification of Letters Patent.

Each series or set of rocker bars is adapt- ,ed to be rocked or shaken independently of the other set bypreference. As shown the rocker bars of the .set disclosed are provided with depending arms 5 pivotally-connected together by a link 6, and connected to said link as shown or in any other suitableor preferred manner, is a rod 7 which extends through the front wall of the grate and is pivotally connected at its front end to a rock frame 8 pivoted 'ona bracket 9 bolted as shown or otherwise secured to the front wall of the furnace.
The rock frame 8 is provided with a head 10 at its upper end, and said head is formed with an elongated recess 11, a handle socket 12, and a lockingnotch 13, the said notch being of dove-tail shape.
Pivoted to bracket 9 is a latch hook 14 which is held by the force of gravity in the ing the rock bars properly. It does however limit the rocking'action as its hook terminal is alternately struck by the opposite end walls of the recess 11.

It will be noted that the hook terminal is of dove-tailshape in side view to correspond with the dove-tail notch 13, and it will be understood that the latch hook is pivoted with suflicient looseness to permit it to be pressed laterally into said notch, in which position it prevents. operation of the rock frame, it being obvious that by dove-tailing the latch hook in the notch there is no chance of the former kicking upward out of the notch should an attempt be made to operfact, that the hook would be kicked up-' wardly out of the recess if the terminal of the former failed to bear a dove-tailed or equivalent relation with said shoulders. This will be understood readily by reference to the dotted lines Fig. 1, where it will be seen the latch hook can not be swung upward without first imparting swinging movement to the rock frame in the direction indicated by the adjacent arrow.
When the latch hook is in engagement with the notch 13, the rocker bars are in horizontal or operative position, and cannot be moved without first disengaging the latch hook from said notch. To operate the rocker bars to effect the dislodgment of ashes and clinkers therefrom down: into the ash pit, 1 preferably employ a handle 15 which is slipped into the socket 12 and which may be removed therefrom and fitted in the socketed outer end of right angle shaped rocker frame 16, pivoted on' abracket 17 secured to the front wall of the furnace, this rocker frame being pivotally connected by a link 18 to a b1ock 19" pivoted to the lower end of an arm 20 depending from an inclined dump section 21, the same being pivoted or hinged at its opposite ends in the side wall and channel bar of the grate. The operation of the rocker frame 16 in one direction swings the dump section downward to effect the discharge of clinkers or ashes into the ash pit. The reverse action of said rocker framerestores the dump sec tion to normal or operative position. To look the dump section in normal position, the rocker frame 16 is provided at its upper edge with a shoulder 22 for engagement by a pivoted dog 23, mounted on the bracket 17. Before the dump section can be operated to perform its dumping function, the pivoted dog must be swung upward to permit the shoulder to pass below it inthe operation of the rocker frame. When the rocker frame is operated to restore the dump section to normal position, the pivoted dog automatr cally reengages the shoulder 22 and thus locks the dump section in the position de-.
been explained in connection with the description thereof no recapitulation is deemed necessary, as it is believed the ad vantages set forth in the statement of the object of the invention are readily apparent.
It is desirable to call attention to the fact that by suddenly checking each rocking movement of the rocker bars, through the alternate engagement of the end walls of the recess of the rock frame with the latch hook, ashes are dislodged and fall into the ash pit without appreciably disturbing the fuel on the grate.
I claim:
1. The combination in a grate, of a series of rocket bars, a rock frame provided with an elongated recess extending substantially concentrically of the axis of movement of said frame; said rock frame having a notch at one side and intermediate the length of said recess, and a latch-hook engaging said recess and adapted to limit rocking move ment of the rock frame through the abut ment of the ends of the recess against said hook; said hook being movable for engagement with said notch to lock the rock frame against movement, and connections between the rock frame and rocker bars.
2. The combination in a grate, of a series of rocker bars, a rock frame provided with an elongated recess extending substantially concentrically of the axis of movement of said frame, and with a dovetail notch at one side and intermediate the ends of said recess, means for transmitting power from the rock frame to said rocker bars, and a latch hook provided with a dove-tail shaped head engaging the recess when the rock frame is free to be operated and fitting snugly in said notch to lock the rock frame against operation.
