Description
No. 120.,045. Patentedom. 17,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SPBAGUEN DAVIS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,045, dated October 17, 1871; antedated October 11, 1871.
To all whom fitrmay concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN SPRAGUEN DAvIs, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and usefulV Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formingpart of this specification.
' Figure l is a top view4 of my improved baletie. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an under-side view of the same, the band and keys being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
My invention relates to the combination of side and cross-bars with keys to form a bale-tie; and consists in an improved construction of the parts, as hereinafter fully described, and subsequently clearly pointed out in the claim.
The body of the tie consists of two short curved side bars, A, connected at their ends by two cross-bars, B. The inner edges of the middle parts of the side bars B project inward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as t0 form lips b', which, in connection with the side bars A, form seats for the keys C. The outer sides of the keys (l have an edge or acute angle formed upon them to t into the seat formed for them between the side bars A and the lips b of the end bars B. The inner sides of the keys O are rounded ofi', as shown in Fig. 2. The ties are applied by bending the ends of the bale-bands into loops, which are passed down through the tie A B, and through which the keys O are passed. When strain comes upon the band the curvature of the side bars A forces the keys C close against the lips b of lthe end or cross-bars B, clamping the ends of the bands between the said keys and lips with a force proportioned to the strain upon the bands. The rounded form of the keys O prevents the ends of the bands from being bent so sharply as to make said bands liable to break under the action of cold or when bent cold.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the band D, of the keys C O and the buckle herein described, having curved side bars A A and cross-bars B B, the latter provided with lips b b', when all are constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN SPRAGUEN DAVIS. Witnesses:
A. AMILl-E, H. C. MEADER.
