When the electrode carrier is mounted in the body or shell 5 the screw threaded socket or opening of the conducting plug 14 is disposed in alinement with an opening 21 in the side of the body or shell, and into this opening the screwthreaded shank or stem 15 and the collar 18 forming part of the binding screw are inserted, as clearly shown by Fig. 1. The electrodes 19 and 20 depend through the interior of the lower portion of'the body or shell 5 and straddle a cross or transversely extending contact 22 secured to the lower portion of the body or shell and forming the ground connection, as it were, which will be readily understood. The conducting screw-stem lnserted 1n the side opening of plug or conductor it may be round or circular in cross-section, or fiat as may be desired, and it will be observed that when the carrier 13 is placed within the body or ,shell 5 it will simultaneously dispose the electrodes 19 and 20 in working position for the reason-that the said electrodes will be guided in a proper direction to straddle the electrode 22, and when all of the electrodes are so arranged or as illustrated by Fig. 1 the screw socket in the conductor plug will be open to or in alinement with the opening 21 of the body or shell 5. When the screw cap 12 is inserted in the upper end of the body or shell it will firmly bear upon the upper surface of the carrier and tightly force the latter downwardly against the annular shoulder 7 and washer 9, the
' washer preventingany leakage between the shoulder and the lower portion of the carrier bearing thereon. The insulating collar 18 will also obviate any tendency to sparking between the outer end of the conductor 14 and the head of the screw 17, and by this means sparking will always be forced to take place between the electrodes 19 and 20 and 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the parts of the improved. sparking plug are compact and may be readily assembled. There is no liability of short-circuits between the conductor and the insulating carrier, and air gaps or spaces as well as moisture collecting spaces are entirely obviated by the construction hereinbefore specified. Moreover, the cost of manufacture of the several parts is materially reduced in view of their simplicity and facility in assembling the same.
What is claimed is:
1. In a sparking plug, a body having an interior annular shoulder in the upper portion thereof and a side opening at a point slightly above the shoulder, a carrier consisting of a fiat body formed of insulating material and of disk-like 'contour, said body having a metallic conductor fully inclosed therein and exposed solely at one extremity aaoaeea through the said body and provided with a screw-threaded socket opening through the said exposed extremity thereof, the conductween (the free ends of the said electrodes, a
screw cap fitted in the upper portion of the body and bearing directly on the top surface of and fully covering the upper portion of the body of the carrier andoperating to hold the latter tightly against the shoulder of the body, and a binding post having a the body and the screw socket of the conductor.
2. A sparking plug having a body, a conductor in the lower portion thereof, a fiat carrier of insulating material held in'snug engagement with the plug in which it is disposed to obviate formation of air and water spaces within the plug and provided with a metallic conductor fully inclosed therein in diametric relation thereto, the carrier shielding all parts of the conductor from exposure to any part of the body adjacent thereto, electrodes in engagement with the conductor and extending only partially through'the carrier and. depending below the latter, a flat screw cap directly engaging and fully covering the top portion of the carrier and closing the upper part of the plug and thereby wholly inclosing the carrier in the plug, the projection of the cap at vat one end within the periphery of the disklike body of the carrier, the flat disk-like body interposing an insulation between the whole conductor and all parts of the device to which the carrier maybe applied, the conductor being provided with a screw socket extending partially therethrough and opening outwardly through the normally exposed end of the said conductor, the conductor being also provided with a pair of electrodes having. their upper ends held in spaced relation and terminating in the conductor, said electrodes depending below the disk-like body, and a binding screw for engagement with the screw socket exposed at one end of the conductor and having an insulating sleeve to close the normally exposed end of the conductor within the periphery of the carrier.
4. An electrode carrier for a sparking .plug consisting of a flat circular disk formed of insulating material and having a diametric opening extending only partially therethrough, the carrier being of such dimensions as to snugly fit within the inclosure to which it is adapted to be applied, a metallic conductor or plug inserted in the said openin of the disk and wholly inclosed within the atter, said conductor being normally exposed only at one end within the periphery of the disk, a pair of electrodes inserted through the conductor at an angle to and terminating in the latter and depending below the bottom of the disk, and a binding screw removably engaging the conductor at the exposed end 0 the latter and provided with insulating means to close over the normally exposed end of the conductor.
5. A sparking plug having a body with an inner ,l'annular shoulder, an electrode carrier consisting of a fiat insulating disk disposed on said shoulder and provided with a metallic conductor wholly inclosed by and extending diametrically thereinto and haV- mg a pair of electrodes terminating and secured therein and depending below the disk, a binding screw extending through the side of the body into the metallic conductor, and a flat screw cap movably engaging the upper end of the body and bearing directly upon and holding the electrode carrier in place and fully inclosin the said carrier in the body, the body also having a conducting means disposed between the free ends of the electrodes.
