COMBlNATION PACKING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED MAYZB, I9I5.

To all whom it mag concern; V
, Be it. known that; we,-;MELvIn H LU.O'AS and; Dianne Ba Kenny, citizens ofmthe ni ed St sid et For ed i the county of; Multnomah and State of Oregon, -haveeinvented certain, new and useful; v provements inflombination .Backing-flods a d w o her byd le h el ew na e be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe ,invention, suohas will enableothers slgi lled in the art; towhich it'; appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relatesgto new and useful improvements in combination packing tools p encirchngming-S means oft-which,- the dev-ie s eper teda fllheen 1, of: he a 6 "epp e t th fin eeienei i s -i e p and the principal object of the invention :1s to provide a device .Which combinesga packing tool with a removen; L-
Another object of the inventionis to providea packing'remover which-maybe ea'sily and quickly operated by inserting the'pointp,
thereof into the packing and swinging the point so as to form a hook which will engage the packing and permit the user to withdraw the packing by exerting pull on the tool. e I
A further object of the invention is to provide a device ofthe above character to which may be secured tools of varying sizes and kinds which may be used in replacing the packing. 7
Still another object of the invention is to provide a packing tool comprising a handle having a shank formed in one end thereof and pivotally mounted in the shank is a trigger located near the handle and at the free end of the shank having a point pivoted which is connected to the trigger by a suitable connecting rod sotha't when the trigger is pulled the point will be swung on its pivot to form a hook and engage packing to hold the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a packing remover constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section to more clearly illustrate the details of construction, and Fig; 3 is a sectional view of the forward end of the shank and,

The forward end of the connecting bar is preferably bifurcated as at 12 and adapted to receive a suitable screw 13 by which the point which willbe more fully hereinafter described is pivotally connected to the connecting bar. 7 V
The point above referred to comprises '-the body 14 provided with the'rearwardly extending ear'15 having formed therein an opening for the reception of the screw 13 and depending from the body 14 is an ear 16 which is pierced to receive the screw 17 which extends through the bifurcated portion 4 of the shank 2. Formed on the body 14 is a forwardly extending hook member 18 terminating in the point 19 which is arranged to engage in the packing so that the device may firmly rip the same to withdraw it from the stul%ng box. It is to be understood that a number of these hook members of varying sizes may be furnished with each of the tools so that where desired larger or smaller hook members may be used in larger or smaller openings.
Formed in the handle 1 is an axial internal screw threaded bore 20 for the reception of the threaded portion 21 of theshank 22 of the packingv tool designated generally by the numeral 23 which comprises the shank 22 and the blade 24. It is to be understood that any desired number or forms of packing tools 23 may be substituted for the oneherein described in order that the device may be made to be used under varying circumstances.
ters 10f reference;theglnumeral,1; designates i. V :6 i" F med-An; the shank adi centztothehan- From the foregoing it will beapparent that in use the packing may be placed in a stuffing box in the usual way by inserting the proper tools in the handle 1 and when it is desired to remove the packing from a stufling box the proper hook member, is placed in the forward end of the shank 1 by removing the screw 17 and the ear 15 is then disposed in the bifurcated portion 12 of the connecting bar 10 and secured in place by the screw '13. It will thus be seen from the packing box it will be apparent that the hook will pull the packing at the same time and thereby remove the same.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim. What is claimed is A combination packing'tool including a handle, a shank on the handle, said shank being provided with a slot near the handle and being bifurcated at its free terminal, a trigger pivoted in the slot in the shank, a
- hook member comprising-a body, an ear extending downwardly from the body and pivoted in the bifurcation in the shank, an
ear extending rearwardly from the body,
a connecting bar connecting the last mentioned ear with the trigger and being movable upon the upper face of the shank at a point formed on the forward end of the body to engage in the packing to enable the same to be removed when the device is in use.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses,
MELVIN H. LUCAS. V V DENNIS B. KELLY.
