H. J. SOHUETT.
COMBINED CIGAR TIP PUNCH AND, FORMER. No. 306,867.
(No Model.)
. Patented Oct. 21, 1884.
UNITED STATES A'rEN'r Erica.
HENRY J. SOHUE'IT, or onrnorr, MICHIGAN.
COMBlNED ClGAR-T|P PUNCH AND FORMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,867, dated October 21, 1884.
Application filed March 5, 1884. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. SoHUErr, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Combined Cigar-Tip Punch and Former; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices adapted to punch the end of a cigar. so that the same may be lighted and smoked without the necessity of cutting or biting off the end thereof in order to allow the air and smoke to be drawn through.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts, their combinations, and operation, as more fully hereinafter de scribed.
Figure l is a perspective showing in dotted lines the manner of holding a cigar in position While perforating and forming the end. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the header.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a standard which is provided with feet B, or other appliances, by means of which to attach 'the standard to the bench of the Workman.
To the top of this standard is secured an overhanging arm, (J, having a vertical hole through which the rod 1) has a tree reciprocating movement when pressure is applied upon the button E at the top of the rod. and in the opposite direction by the action of the spring F, which finds its points of resistance against the button at one end and against the tube G, which is secured to the top of the arm, the bore of the tube being in line with the hole through the arm. This tube is provided with a slot, a, vertical to its axis, and at the bottom of this slot there 18 the cross-slot b, and a pin, 0, on the rod enables the operator to temporarily lock the rod against its vertically-reciprocating movement byv engaging said pin with the cross-slot h by partially rotating the rod. Secured to the under side of the arm is another tube, its bore being coincident with the hole in said standard, The lower end of this tube G is exteriorly threaded to engage with the header H, which is cored or bored out with three different diameters, the first one, d, being interiorly threaded to engage with the thread on the tube G, the second, 6, being smaller to fit the diameter of the point or pin I, which is secured to the lower end of the rod. The third, f. is conical in shape to lit the head of the cigar. This header is attached in the manner described, in order to allow the user to substitute other heads, the conical bore of which may vary'to suit the peculiar shape of head of cigar under treatment. a
It is obvious that the two tubes mentioned the one being secured to the top of the arm and the other to the bottom thereof, may be a single tube passing through the arm, the hole through which in that case must be made sufficit-ntly large to receive it.
In practice the cigar is made in the usual manner, except that the head is not finished, such head b-ing drawn to the propershape and to a'point,.is cutoff. when it is inserted into the header, and the rod being forcibly depressed its pin is forced into that end'ot' the cigar. If desired now while the rod is so depressed, it may be locked in that position, as hereinbel'ore described, and the operator, without removing the cigar, can paste or gum the wrapper tightly to place.
What I claimas my invention is- 1. A combined cigar punch and header, consisting of the standard A, provided at its base with means for securing it in place and at its upper end with an overhanging arm, 0, the latter having a vertical opening in its outer end, and carrying a header, H, in combination with a rod, as D, supported by said arm and standard. and having a vertically-reciprocating movement through the opening in I the arm 0, and carrying a pointer, 1, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In acigar punch, the combination of the arm 0. header H, and the vertically-reciprocating rod provided with a pin, 0, and carrying at its lower end the point I, with the spring F, and the tube G, the latter provided with a vertical slot and a cross-slot to hold said rod against the tension of the spring, substantially
