ATTACHMENT FOR HARVESTERS AND BINDERS,
APPLICATSON FILED JUNE 16, I916- Patented Spt. 26, 1916.
ELDOR M. ELLrAsoiv, or noivA DsoN, MINNESOTA.
ATTACHMENT non HARVESTERS AND Bnvnnns.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 26, 1916,
Application as June 16, 1916, Serial No. 104,019.
To all whom it may concern. 7 a 7 Be it known that I, ELDOR M. ELLIAsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Donaldson, in the county of Kittson and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Harvesters and Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for lOharvesters and binders, and it has for its object to produce a simple and improved device which may be easily applied to any harvester or binder of conventional construction and which will operate to save grain by facilitating the passage of short grain over the sickle bar and to the platform apron without necessity of lowering the reel to an excessive extent where it will be in danger of breaking.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved attachment which will facilitate the passage of grain and especially of short grain-upon the platform apron to the elevator and which will keep the grain straight and in good condition for binding.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved device of the type described which may be readily fitted to harvesters and binders of various types and makes.
IVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in- 'vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a portion of a binder to which the invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view showing the improved device detached from the binder. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 44 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several fig,
ures are denoted. like characterslof referencev o The top and bottom members 15, 16of the 1mproved device consist of plates of suitable material, such asgalvanized sheet metal, each plate being of a length substantially equal to the length of the platform of the machine in connection with which it is to be used. 1 The top and bottom platesare relatively narrow although the top plate is of a width materially exceeding the width of the bottom plate. The top and bottom plates are provided at their front edges with hinge lugs 17, 18 engaging a rod or pintle 19 whereby the parts are hmgedly. connected. The top and bottom plates are connected together screws 20 about which springs 21 have been coiled for .the purpose of spacing the top and bottom plates apart. The bottom plate is provided with transverse grooves or corrugations 22, and it has a plurality of apertures 23. Connected adjustably withthe top plate 15 adjacent to one end thereof is a tongue 24 having slots 25 engaged by the attaching bolts 26, said tongue extending upwardly with respect to the top plate.
In practice the improved attachment is connected with the finger bar S of a harvester or binder, the grooves or corrugations 22 serving to accommodate the bolt heads or nuts of the fastening members whereby the guard fingers are secured. The device is attached by means of short screws 27 engaging the finger bar through the apertures 23, and said screws being obviously short so that they will not obstruct the movement of the sickle bar. The top plate 15 will overhang the front bar F of the platform frame, and it will also overhang the front edge of the platform apron A, the springs 21 serving to sustain the top plate 15 in spaced position above the" platform apron. The tongue 24 will extend across the gap between the platform apron and the elevator E. The device will thus constitute a guide whereby the grain will be conveyed over the finger bar to the platform apron, greatly facilitating the passage of short grain and avoiding loss thereof. The device will also prevent the narrow interspace between the finger bar and the platform apron from becoming choked or obstructed by short grain lodging therein.
The improved device, as Will be seen is,
extremely simple in construction and is capable of being manufactured andinstalled at a very moderate expense. It has proven in actual practice to be thoroughly efficient for the purpose for which it is intended.-
Having thus described the invention, Wh3.lT-"."'
is claimed as new, is 1 1. An attachment for I harvesters and binders comprising a narrow plate of a length substantially equal to the. length of the finger bar, means whereby said plate may be mounted on thefinger bar, a second binders, a bottom plate, means whereby said plate may be mounted on a finger bar, a top plate hingedly connected With the bottom plate at the front edge thereof, connecting members extending through the two plates, and springs coiled about. said connecting members. I c
3. An attachment for harvesters and c'omp rising "a bottom plate, means :for securing said plate on a finger bar, a top plate hingedlyconnected With the bottom plate at the front edge thereof, said top plate extendingrearwardly above the front edge of the platform apron, connecting members extending through the'two'plates,
and springs coiled about said connecting members, the topplate having a tongue adjustably connected therewith adjacent to one endthereof. 5 4 An attachment for harvesters. and binders comprising a corrugated bottom plate, a top plate hingedly connected with the bottom plate at the front edge thereof,
said top plate being of a Width materially exceeding the Width of the bottom plate,
1neans whereby the bottom plate is connected with a finger bar, the corrugations of the bottom plate serving to accommodate portions of the fastening means whereby the guard fingers are secured on the finger bar, connecting members extending through the top and bottom plates, spacing springs coiled about said connecting members, and a tongue adjustably connected With the overhanging portion of the top plate "adjacent to one edge thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
