MEANS FOR DISCHARGING- VERTICAL GAS-RETORTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT JOHN Tooooon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at The Poplars, Elland, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Discharging Vertical Gas-Retorts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vertical gas retorts such as shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States dated June 23rd, 1914, No. 1,101,477, granted on an application filed by me of even date herewith, and its principal object is to facilitate the discharge of the coke without breakage thereof.
The lower end of the retort being more or less oval in cross-section, and this shape presenting difliculties in the mechanical extraction of the coke, in continuous retorts an extension has previously been added having sloping sides, in order to enable a circular or like cross-section to be obtained where the extracting mechanism was applied. These stationary inclines, however, tended to produce hanging up or bridging of the coke, necessitating poking and breakage thereof. To obviate these difliculties, I may arrange an oscillating inclined or curved tray in such a position as to receive the coke from the oval cross-sectional portion of the retort, the movement of which tray, giving a slight upward thrust, will prevent bridging and cause the coke to be gradually discharged in small quantities. Thus to a large extent the necessity for poking is obviated, and the coke is discharged in larger pieces than was hitherto the case. The series of trays in a number of retorts may be secured to a shaft running along the bench, to which shaft an oscillatory rotary movement is imparted by any suitable means; a safety device may be provided in connection with the said shaft, to prevent damage in the event of the coke accumulating below the tray not being discharged in due time.
The accompanying drawing or diagram represents the bottom of a retort and its appurtenances according to my invention.
In this example, the reference numeral 2 indicates the retort, and 16 a downward extension thereof, surrounded wholly or partially by cooling chambers, which may be Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
either water chambers or air flues 15, 20 and 30 and having, as shown in the drawing, a cross-sectional area at all points as great asthe cross-sectional area of the re tort 2 at its point of discharge into such extension, which is the maximum cross-sectional area of said retort. This relative size in cross-section of said parts will permit the charge to pass from said retort through said extension without compression.
The numeral 28 indicates the discharging mouthpiece, having any desired capacity, and being closed by any ordinary lid 29. The reciprocating tray 33 works on a shaft 34, the bearing of which is formed in the horizontal partition between the chambers 15 and 20, and is thereby kept cool. The general principle of an oscillating tray is well known for other purposes in gas plant, such as hopper and conveying plants.
It will be obvious that coal will pass into the retort bygravity in the usual manner as the coke is extracted.
The tray 33 and means for actuating the same constitute automatically continuously moving extractor mechanism below the said downward extension 16 and directly supporting the charge at its lowest point.
I claim as my invention 1 In continuously fed gas retorts of the type described, the combination of a downward extension of the retort of unreduced cross sectional area in relation to the retort and having its terminal edge or mouth in a horizontal plane, a discharge tray, arms supporting said tray pivoted to one side of said extension, said arms being of a length equal to the distance from their pivotal point to the farthest edge of said mouth, a combined supporting and discharging tray supported by said arms and curved on the arc of a circle of which the pivots of the arms form the center, and means for oscillating said shelf to a limited extent, whereby it is self sufficient to discharge the coke while continuouslv supporting the lower face of the charge.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT JOHN TOOGOOD.
