UNITED STATES PATNT FREDERICK W. DRESSEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE DRESSEL RAILWAY LAMP WORKS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed January 2, 1915. Serial No. 187.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. DRES- snL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hand lanterns, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient and reliable attaching member which may be easily secured to a lantern frame in order to permit of the lantern being detachably secured to or mounted upon a rigid support.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an attaching member or bracket which may be readily and securely fastened to the flat guards of a lantern frame so as to permit of said lantern being detachably secured within a socket or receiving member rigidly mounted upon a suitable support.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide an attaching member comprising a segmental plate having its edges conformed to certain of the flat guards of a lantern frame, and a bracket extending from said segmental plate, and provided with means adapted to engage with a suitable engageable member or device rigidly secured to a suitable support.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern with one form of attaching device constructed according to and embodying my said invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the attaching device detached from the lantern frame; Fig. 3 is a face view thereof showing the same in its relation to the fiat guards of a lantern frame, and Fig. 4 is a top view of the attaching member also detached from the lantern frame.
In said drawings 10 designates a hand lantern which is of the usual general con-' struction and embodying a frame formed of a plurality of vertical fiat guards 11, 11 connected together by horizontal rings or guards 12, 12. The lower ends 11 of the vertical fiat guards are curved and extend outwardly, and are secured together at their lower ends by aring or annular guard 14.
15 denotes the attaching member comprising a curved segmental plate 16 having outwardly extending flanges 17 17 at its opposite curved edges which flanges are conformed to, and adapted to be secured to the opposing faces of the lower ends of two adjoining vertical fiat guards 11, 11. The flanges 17, 17 on the segmental plate 16 are provided with apertures 18, 18 to receive bolts or screws 19, 19 which are adapted to extend through the adjoining lower ends of the guards 11, 11 of the lantern frame.
20 denotes a bracket or arm having its inner end secured to the outer side of the segmental plate 16, and extending horizontally therefrom. The said bracket or arm 20 is provided at its free outer end with a tapering lug or engaging member 21 which is adapted to engage with a suitable engageable member or socket rigidly secured to the particular support or object upon which the lantern is to be mounted.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the attaching bracket comprising the segmental plate 16, flanges 17, 17, arm or bracket 20, and the attaching lug 21 thereon formed as an integral structure. It is obvious, however, that the several parts may be made separately and secured together by suitable means.
It is to be noted particularly that my attaching member or bracket may be easily and firmly secured to a lantern frame, Without requiring any change or alteration therein, in order to adapt the lantern for use as a hand lantern or for use in connection with or upon a suitable support or structure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a hand lantern and the frame thereof comprising a plurality of guards with an attaching member comprising a plate adapted for securement along its Q l9 1 9 12 11; 9f the g ards of said frame,
and means on said plate adapted to engage with rigid cooperating means for supporting said lantern, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a hand lantern and the frame thereof COIlSiStiIlg partly of a plurality of vertical guards, with an attaching member comprising a plate positioned between and secured to two of said vertical guards, and means on said plate adapted to engage with rigid cooperating means for supporting said lantern, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a hand lantern and the frame thereof comprising a plurality of guards, with an attaching member comprising a plate positioned between and secured to the opposing faces of two adjacent guards of said frame, and means on said plate adapted to engage with rigid cooperating means for supporting said lantern, substantially as specified.
4;. The combination of a hand lantern and the frame thereof comprising a plurality of fiat guards, an attaching member comprising a plate positioned between two adjacent guards of said frame and having flanges at its ends engaging the opposing faces of said two guards, means securing said flanges to said two guards, and means on said plate adapted to engage with rigid cooperating means for supporting said lantern, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a hand lantern and the frame thereof having flat guards, with a curved segmental plate disposed intermediate said guards, projecting flanges at the opposite edges of said plate conformed to said fiat guards, means for securing said flanges to said guards, and a bracket extending outwardly from said plate, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of a hand lantern and the frame thereof having a plurality of fiat vertical guards with a segmental plate disposed intermediate certain of said guards, said plate having projecting flanges at its opposite edges conformed to said flat guards, means for securing said flanges to said guards, a bracket extending outwardly from said plate, and a lug provided upon the outer end of said bracket, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 11th day of September, one thousand nine hundred and fourteen.
FREDERICK W. DRESSEL.
