PORTABLE LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Original application filed January 10, 1918, Serial No. 211,309. Divided and this application filed July 10,
1918. Serial No. 244,185.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Portable Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, which is a division of my copending application, Serial No. 211,309, filed January 10, 1918, relates to improved means for securing to each other in a simple manner, a light cluster, reflector and a bail for the reflector.
It becomes an object of this invention, therefore, to provide means whereby the bail, usually permanently secured to reflectors of the type above designated, may be held securely in place on the reflector, by means which at the same time holds the light cluster in place in the reflector, as dis tlnguished from the usual arrangement wherein the lights are secured in place by separate apparatus.
It will be apparent from the following description that the structure hereinafter described in detail possesses many advantages over those now in the art, both in cost of manufacture and in assembling, inasmuch as the parts may readily be assembled by any one whether skilled or not, and without the use of special tools.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 shows a preferred embodiment of my invention in sectional elevation; and
Fig. 2 shows the apparatus of Fig. 1 in perspective.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a reflector which may be of any desired contour and of metal or other suit able material employed in the art for this purpose. A light cluster, designated 2, has secured to it a threaded stem 3, shown passing upwardly through the reflector. A bail comprising the members 4c and 5 1s provided for the reflector, the stem 3 passing through the member 5. The-bail, reflector and light cluster are maintained securely in position by a nut 6 screwed on the stem 3 to clamp the member 5 of the bail, and a portion of the reflector 2, between it and the portion 8 of the light cluster. If desired, a lock nut 7 may be provided to prevent accidental loosening of the nut 6.
From the foregoing it will be seen that to assemble the parts is a simple matter, merely requiring that the stem 3 be slipped through the top of the reflector, the bail placed in position, and the nuts 6 and 7 set up.
While I have described in detail a preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire not to be limited to the precise details of construction illustrated and described, inasmuch as various changes might be made without departing from the scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a light fixture, the combination of a reflector, a bail supporting member, a lamp holder, and retaining means separable from the lamp holder and forming therewith the sole retaining means for securing the reflector, bail supporting member and lamp holder to each other.
2. In a light fixture, the combination of a reflector, a bail supporting member, a lamp holder, and retaining' means separable from the bail supporting member and forming with the lamp holder the sole retaining means for securing the reflector, bail supporting member and lamp holder to each other.
3. In a light fixture, the combination of a reflector, a bail for the reflector, a bail supporting member, a lamp holder, a stud rigid with the lamp holder, and means separate from the reflector and bail supporting member cooperating with the stud and forming the sole retaining means for securing the reflector, bail supporting member and lamp holder to each other.
4:. In a light fixture, the combination of a reflector, a bail for the reflector, a bail supporting member, a lamp holder, a member rigid with the lamp holder and passing through the reflector and bail supporting member, and a member cooperating therewith and forming the sole retaining means for securing the reflector, bail supporting member and lamp holder to each other.
5. In a light fixture, the combination of a reflector, a bail therefor, a bail supporting member, a lamp holder, a screw threaded member rigid with the lamp holder and passing through the reflector and bail supporting member, and a nut adapted to be threaded on said screw threaded member to clamp 10 a JOHN D. NEWTON.
