IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,934, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs LEwIs, of the city of Vicksburg, county of Varren and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinCotton-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will en able others skilled in the art to make and use the same,l
reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is afront elevation, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, andfFig. 3 a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. rIhis invention relates to that class of presses in which the follower is attached to two levers, by the working of which it is moved up and down, and my invention consists in arranging a capstan with sheaves in such a manner as to opcrate these levers and coniine the strain within itself in a manner not liable to pull the press out of line, as heretofore. The object of the invention is to increase the durability, efciency, and convenience of the press, by making the chain or rope by which the lower ends of these levers are drawn together single acting, thereby dispensing with a complication of sheaves and lines which have been used heretofore.
In the drawing, A A A A are four upright posts, connected at the top by beams B and at the bottom by two sills, O O. These pieces constitute the frame of the press. D is the follower, attached at the bottom to two levers, E E. The other ends of these levers are hinged to vertical rods F, which extend up through the beam B, to which they are again hinged. G indicates the frame of the capstan; H, a vertical drum 5 I, the lever by which it is turned; J, a chain or rope which extends from the bottom end of one lever, across between the uprights A, to the bottom end of the other, to both of which it is firmly se cured. At the center of this chain or rope there is a similar one, K, secured, and extending back to the drum of capstan, which, when turned, winds it up and draws in the chain J, when, being drawn in, this chain J passes around sheaves L L. These sheaves are secured to vertical shafts M M, which turn in bearings formed in sill C', and a parallel bar, N.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the levers E E, rods F F, follower D, sheaves L L, and windlass H, the ropes or chains J and K, when constructed and arranged substantially as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
