' UNITED ELIAS JONES, OF PIERREPONT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN FIRE-EXTINGUISHERS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,931, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS JONES, of Pierrepont, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented an Improved Fire- Extingnisher, of which the following is a specification, in the drawing forming part of which' Figure 1 is a horizontal, and Fig. 2a vertical section.
This invention relates to a revolving hydraulic apparatus for extinguishing fires by means of a cylindrical case, having orifices in its rim opening into funnels attached-to the exterior thereof, the longer sides of which funnels stand tangcntial to the rim, said case being suspended in a horizontal position upon a pipe which passes vertically through its center, forming the axis on which the case turns, which pipe has a cylindrical receptacle attached to its lower end within the aforesaid cylindrical case; said receptacle having also orifices in its rim opening into curved pipes that project from its periphery, which pipes convey the water that is poured into the receptacle through the said vertical pipe into the surrounding case, whence it is discharged through the tangential funnels for the extinguishment of contiguous fires, such discharges producing, by reaction, a rotary movement of the case.
Referring to the drawing, a, is the vertical pipe, passing through and firmly attached to a bar, b,
which is to be fastened to the under side of any suitable horizontal support, (a ships deck for exan1ple,) the pipe a also passing through said support. A is the cylindrical receptacle, made fast to the bottom of the pipe to, and c are the curved spouts projecting from the outside of the said receptacle. B is the cylindrical case, through whose top the pipe to passes centrally, and whose bottom is connected by a bolt, d, with the bot tom of the receptacle A. Ears e c extend radially i'rom the top and bottom of the case B, and are connected by bolts f, which fasten the top and rim of the case to its bottom. 0 are the tangential funnels of the case B. The rotary movement imparted by atmospheric reaction to the case B tends to diffuse the streams issuing from the tunnels 0 equally on all sides of the case, and the distance to which these streams are thrown depends upon the force of the current flowing through the pipe a.
This apparatus will be found especially convenient for vessels.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the pipe a, receptacle A, pipes a, case B, and tunnels G, as specified.
