To all w item it may concern Be it known that I, Ronnn'r E. CAMPBELL, a 'ditizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gas burner of the Bunsen type.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple, substantial, improved burner of the character described, particularly adapted for laboratory, jewelry, dental and like work where a steady small flame of high temperature is required.
Another object of the invention is to provide a burner which can be easily handled and which may be adjusted to direct the flame in any direction desired.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described andclaimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the burner. Fig. 2 is an end view of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder, showing the burner proper removed. Fig. l is a cross section of the holder, taken on the line of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the spring clip by which the burner is secured to the holder.
Referring in detail to the drawings, A indicates a suitably shaped base or holder, upon which is supported a burner, generally indicated at B. The burner proper consists of a horizontally positioned pipe 2. connected with a source of gas supply by means of a flexible hose 3 and having its other end turned up to form a U-shaped bond 4: which serves as a holder for a vertically disposed burner tube 5. The upper end of the pipe is plugged and provided with an internally threaded fitting (3, through which the tube 5- extends. This tube is preferably threaded on the exterior to permit the position of the tube to be adjusted vertically with relation to a discharge orifice 8 formed in the gas supply pipe.
For the purpose of supporting the burner proper, consisting of the U-shaped pipe 2 and the burner tube 5, a spring clip has been provided, a perspective view of which is shown in Fig. 5. The lower portion of the base is provided with a crosswise extending groove 9 adapted to receive the base portion of the spring clip, and the clip, when applied, assumes the position shown in Fig. 1. The upper ends of the spring clip indicated at 10 are perforated, as at 11, to receive the pipe 2.
Then assembling the parts, it is only necessary to apply the clip to the base member A, as shown in Fig. 1. The upwardly extending ends are then bent into the dotted llne position shown at 12 and the pipe 2 is passed through the perforations 11 as these are in alinement when in the dotted line position shown. The moment the pipe is inserted to assume the position shown in F ig. 1, it is only necessary to release the ends 10 which will immediately spring out to assume the full line position shown. They will then bear with sufficient pressure on the pipe to hold this in any position desired.
The center portion of the base or holder A is raised, as shown at 13, to form a central support and guide for the pipe and has a groove, as at 14:, in alinement with the clip ends with this object in view. A larger cross groove 15 is also provided to permit the burner tube to assume the horizontal position shown in dotted lines at 16 in Fig. 2.
The mounting of the burner constructed as shown permits the burner to be swung in the clip ends to assume any angle desired from the horizontal position indicated at 16 to the vertical position shown, thus permitting the flame discharging from the burner tube to be projected in any direction desired. The gas discharge perforation 8, formed in the pipe 2, will always be in direct alinement with the burner tube whether it is standing in a vertlcal or in an inclined position and will, therefore, act as an injector which induces or draws in suflicient air to produce a perfect mixture.
The U-shaped bend forms a handle by which the burner, with connected base, may be picked up or moved about and also a handle by which the angular position of the burner tube may be adjusted. The pressure of the spring clip upon the tube is suflicient to maintain this in any adjusted position. The base proper maybe stamped and filled with metal, as at 17, to give the base weight, or, if desired, may be cast as a solid; the groove 9 being formed in either instance to receive the base portion of the clip.
The device as a whole is simple and substantial in construction, may be quickly assembled or taken apart, and may be adjusted to project the flame in any direction desired, the only necessary operation being to turn the pipe by means of the U-shaped handle projection l.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the device are otherwise such as the experience and judgment ofthe manufac turer may dictate.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims and that I do not wish to limit myself to the specific design and construction here shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a base member,a spring clip surrounding the base, a pair of perforated upturned ends integral with the clip, a gas supply pipe extending through and journaled in said ends, and a burner pipe carried by the supply pipe.
2. A burner including a base having a groove formed across its bottom and having a raised central top portion formed with a pair of intersecting grooves, a clip having a body seated in the bottom groove and having its end parts engaged over the upper part of the base and its terminals extending up wardly from the base and perforated, a U- shaped burner pipe seated in one of said intersecting grooves and having one arm there of passing through the clip terminal perforations, and a vertical burner tube connected to the other arm of the burner pipe and receivable in the other of said intersecting grooves to allow the tube to assume a horizontal position.
3. A burner including a base having a groove formed across its top and across its bottom, a u-shaped burner pipe having one arm received in said top groove, and a clip having a body received in said bottom.

6. In a burner, a base having a bearing,a U-shaped burner pipe having one arm ournaled in the bearing and extending beyond the latter, and means at each end of the bear ing engaging with said pipe to adjustably hold same.
7. In a burner, a base, a burner pipe arranged over the base and an integral clip having perforated arms extending above the top of the base and receiving the pipe in its perforations.
8. A burner including a base the upper face of which is formed with a bearing that opens upwardly, a burner pipe seated. in said bearing, and. means to hold said pipe against upward movement out of said bearing and at the same time to allow the pipe to be adjusted in said bearing to assume different positions relative to the base and to automatically hold same in such different positions.
