Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Application filed April 26, 1915, Serial No. 23,947. Renewed March 30, 1916. Serial No. 87,853.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MALCOLM B. Mornn,
'a citizen of the United States, residing at Montevideo, in the county of Chippewa and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle- Stanchions; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cattle stanchions and one object thereof is to so construct a device of this character that it may be readily adjusted for use on cattle of different sizes and in which the parts may be easily taken apart and assembled.
Another object is to provide improved means for detachably connecting the pivoted side member of the stanchion in closed operative position.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a stanchion constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof taken from the front; Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the upper end of the stanchion; Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view through the hinge of the movable side bar; Fig. 7 is a transverse section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 4C.
In the embodiment illustrated, this improved stanchion comprises side members 1 and 2 constructed of metal bars U-shaped in cross section with the rounded convex portions thereof disposed inward and which are preferably lined or faced with hard wood strips 3 which are also U-shaped in cross section to conform to the shape of the bars 1 and 2 and which are detachably secured to the inner faces of said bars by bolts having their heads countersunk in said lining members to prevent injury to the neck of the animal and the projecting ends thereof with the nuts thereon are disposed between the side members of the U-shaped bars 1 and 2. These side bars 1 and 2 are connected by cross bars 1 and 5, the bar 4.
constituting the upper member or top of the stanchion and the bar 5 the lower member thereof. bar 1 is connected with the cross bars at and 5 by clamps 6 and 7 respectively. The clamp 6 which unites the upper end of bar 1 with the inner or rear end of bar 4 is formed of two plates between which the upper end of bar 1 is disposed and which is secured to said bar by rivets or other suitable fastening elements. These plates 6 and 6 are provided on their opposed faces with longitudinally extending grooves 6 which register with each other when the plates are in assembled position and form a bore to receive the cross bar 4 which is mounted for longitudinal adjustment in said bore and which is secured in adjusted position therein by clamping bolts 8 which pass transversely through flanges 9 formed on the upper or outer edges of the plates 6 and 6 three of said bolts being here shown but it is obvious that any desired number may be employed. When these plates are securely clamped around said bar 4:, it will be held reliably in adjusted position. The clamp 7 which connects the lower end of the stationary side bar 1 with the lower cross bar 5, is similar in construction to clamp 6, and the bar 5 is adjustably mounted therein the same as bar 4; is mounted in clamp 6. To adapt these bars to be adjusted to vary the distance between the side bars 1 and 2, the nuts on the bolts 8 are loosened and thereby permit the plates constituting the clamps, to be spread laterally apart a suflicient distance to permit the longitudinal movement between them of tobe described. The front end of the upper cross bar 4: is provided on its opposite sides with guides here shown in the form of wings 10 and 11 which are flared outwardly and are designed to receive between them the 11 free end of the movable side member 2f) These wings 10 and 11 as shown, are se-f cured to a sleeve 12 which is secured to the i:
free end of the cross bar 4 by a bolt 13 and The stationary side member or 60 vgiember 30 as shown 1s oval 1n cross section,
this bolt which extends transversely through vent the animal from dodging the stanchion and placing its head to one side of the bar 1 instead of between the bars 1 and 2. This 1 being shaped to fit closely between the side ,member of the U-shaped bars 4 and 5 and to slide therein to provide for the adjustment nesses.

the side members of the U-shaped cross bar of said member toward and away from 4 also performs the function of a pintle or the bar 1. This member is held in adjusted pivot for a swinging latch to be described. position relative to the stanchion by means 5 This sleeve 12 as shown is formed in sections of set screws which extend between the with connecting webs 12 which form corner flanges 9 of the clamps 6 and 7 through nuts plates and are riveted together as shown in 34 disposed between said flanges with their 1. inner ends in engagement with the arms 31 The free end of the movable side bar 2 and 32 of the guard 30, whereby said arm is 10 has a laterally extending U-shaped clip 15 securely locked in adjusted position. This secured thereto with the arms thereof openstanchion is designed to be held in operative ing outwardly and which is designed to be position by means of suspending chains 22 embraced by the wings 10 and 11 when in and which are connected respectively closed position and when in open position, is with the upper clamping member 6 and the 15 adapted to engage a stall partition shown at lower clamping member 7 and which are P for supporting the side bar 2 in partially designed to be secured to suitable beams or lowered position ready to receive the head other supports not shown, "in any convenient of the animal. The upper edge of this clip and well known manner to prevent undue 15 between the laterally projecting arms swinging movement of the stanchion proper.

In combination, a stanchion cross bar ating latch 14 which is carried by the front and longitudinal bar, one of which is movend of the bar 4 (see Fig. 4), said latch 14 able in relation to the other, outwardly having a hook-shaped member which enflared wings arranged on opposite sides of 25 gages this forwardly projecting lip 16 and one end of said cross bar, a laterally extendinsures a tight grip when the parts are in ing U-shaped clip secured to one end of said interlocking position. This latch 14 as longitudinal bar with the arms thereof openshown, is pivoted intermediately of its ends ing outwardly and designed to fit between on the rivet 13 between the side walls of the the wings of said cross bar when the bars 30 cross bar 4 and a spring 17 is coiled around are in closed position and to engage a stop said rivet with its opposite ends engaging when open, the upper edge of said clip berespeotively the bottom wall of the cross bar tween its arms being bent inwardly to form 4 and the rear end of the latch 14 and thus a catch, and a pivoted spring pressed latch exerts its tension in forcing the hook-shaped carried by said cross bar between the wings 35 front end of said latch into yielding engagethereof and adapted to engage said catch ment with the lip 16 of the clip 15. for locking said bars in closed position.
The lower end of the movable side bar 2 is 2. In combination a stanchion cross bar connected with the front end of the bottom U-shaped in cross section, a sleeve embraccross bar 5 by plates 18 shaped and united ing one end of said cross bar, a bolt extend- 40 to form a sleeve riveted on the front end of ing transversely through said sleeve and the said cross bar and provided with laterally arms of said cross bar, a spring pressed spaced wings 19 and 20 between which the latch pivotally mounted on said bolt to swing lower end of the bar 2 is disposed and pivbetween the arms of the cross bar, outwardly otally connected therewith by a pivot 21 exflared wings arranged on opposite sides of 45 tending transversely through said bar and said sleeve, a longitudinal bar pivotally wings. A bolt 21 connects the outer ends mounted and with its free end movable toof the wings 19 and 20 and is designed for ward and away from the wing carrying limiting the opening movement of the bar 2 end of said cross bar, a U-shaped clip sewhen desired but it may be removed to percured to the free end of said longitudinal 50 mit the bar 2 to swing down to its full bar with the arms thereof opening outextent. wardly and designed to fit between the wings The U-shaped guard 30 is disposed to one of said cross bar when the bars are in closed side of the stationary side bar 1 and spaced position, and a cooperating element carried therefrom with its cross bar disposed vertiby said clip for engagement by the latch on 55 cally and its arms 31 and 32 slidably enthe cross bar.
