Be it known that I, ADALnnn'r Hnrsn, citizen of the United States, residing at Waterford, in the county of Racine and State of iiisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Feeders; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in calf feeders and has for its principal object to provide a device which is particularly adapted for use in weaning calves.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted for use in buckets, pails and similar containers and which will float on the top of the liquid contained therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which is constructed of aluminum or similar light and soft metal having a central tubular stem carrying at its upper end a nipple and at its lower end a washer of rubber or a similar material so that the same will imitate as nearly as possible a natural nipple.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a float formed of sheet metal which will effectively support the device on the surface of the liquid within the recepf tacle.
Vith these and otherl objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following` specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a receptacle showing my improved feeder in place therein, the float being in section to more fully illustrate the details of construction, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the central tube and nipple.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bucket, pail or other receptacle carrying the liquid 2. Supported on the upper surface of the liquid is the feeder designated generally by the numeral 3 which will be described in detail in the following paragraphs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 22,133.
The feeder 3 above referred to, comprises the float which is formed of two separate sheets of metal 4 and 5, the edges of which are bent toward each other as at 6 and the edge of the sheet 5 is provided with the peripheral flange 7 over which the flange 8 of the sheet 4 is turned. This flange 8 is crimped to form a water-tight joint and both of the disks 4 and 5 areY formed with central alining apertures 9 through which the stem carrying the nipple and the confining disk extends.
The stem hereinbefore 'referred to comprises the tubular body 10 having formed near each end an outstanding bead 11 which is arranged to engage the walls of the disk and form a lliquid tight joint to prevent the contents of the bucket from entering the float. Formed at the upper end of the stem 10 is a funnel-shaped member 12 to which the nipple 13 is secured. This funnelshaped member' forms a groove between the upper portion thereof and the bead 11 in which the lower edge of the nipple 13 seats. Formed at the lower end of the stem 10 is a suitable flange 14. This flange 14 forms a groove in which the edge of the confining disk designated generally by the numeral 15 is secured. This confining disk comprises the body 16 which is circular and formed with the slightly upturned rim 17. This disk is preferably concavo-conveX in form and formed with the central aperture 1S which receives the end of the stem 10 intermediate the flange 14 and the lower bead 11.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use, the device is placed in a bucket, as illustrated in Fig. 1 and it will be seen that the lower edge 17 of the confining disk 15 will be disposed considerably beneath the upper surface of 'the contents of the bucket.
It will be apparent that the lower edge of the confining disk is kept at a spaced distance below the surface of the liquid in the receptacle regardless of its heighttherein and it will thus be evident that the animal may feed by means of the nipple 13 and there will be no danger of said animal draw ing air through the tube and nipple.

Vhat is claimed is: l
1. A device of the character described comprising a float, a tubular stein extending through said float, a nipple carried by the upper' end of the stem, and a concavo convex confining disk carried by the lowerl end of the stem.
2. A device of the character described comprising a float, a hollow stem extending through the float, beads near each end of the stem to hold the same in proper position in the float, a flared portion at the upper end of the stem, a nipple surrounding the flared portion, a flange at the lower end of the stem, said flange being spaced from the lower' bead and forming a groove therebetween, and a confining disk secured in the groove.
3. A device of the character described comprising a float, a hollow stem extending' through the float, a nipple at the upper end of the stem, a bead formed near the lower end of the stem, a flange at the lower end of the stem forming a groove between itself and the bead, and a centrally apertured concavo convex confining disk secured in the groove bet-Ween the bead and the flange so flanige at the upper end of the tube, said 40 flange coperating with the upper bead in forming an annular groove, a nipple having its lower end positioned within the groove connected to the tube, an outturned annular flange at the lower end of the tube and spaced downwardly a slight distance from the lower bead to form an annular' groove and a centrally apertured concavo-convex confining disk having the walls of its aperture disposed in the last mentioned groove to secure the device to the stein and said disk having its outer edges disposed downwardly in spaced relation from the float.
