MEANS FOR PREVENTING FIRE IN MOVING-IICTURE APPARATUS.
I '0 all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, LEWIS L. PnILLIPs, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Mineola, Long Island, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have in-' the, object of the invention is to provide improved lmeans for the prevention of such fires, said means being automatic in operation, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in means or apparatus of the class specified, constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the followingspecification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are dcsignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional view of a part of a moving picture apparatus involving my invention; Figj 2 a view at right angles to that of Fig. l and showing only details of the construction and on an enlarged scale; and, Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
In the amompanying drawing, reference being made to Fig. 1 particularly, I have shown a part of a moving picture apparatus involving a top magazine a and a bottom magazine b in which the film reels 0 and (l are mounted, and the magazines a and b are connected, as shown, by a vertical casing 0 involving front and back plates c and 6 having light apertures c and 0".

The full line position of the various parts, as shown in F ig. 1, is he position said parts occupy when the apparatus is in use, and it is a well-known fact that in the use of ap paratus of this class the film, if broken is usually broken below the roller f and the hot rays of light from the projector tube 11 striking the film ignites it and thus starts a fire due to the fact that said film is usually made out of highly combustible material. \Vith my improvement, however, if the film should be broken, as above described, the crank m and its roller m will at once drop into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and the plate n which operates as a shield would also drop into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the rays of light will be cut oil and the film 1] would not be ignited. In this operation, the arm n of the rod it also is thrown into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, as is the arm m of the shaft m. and it will be observed that the arm m is outside of the casing 6, while the crank arm m in its normal position is inside of said casing.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the exact details of the construction herein shown and described. The
main idea being the provision of the shield device which in the event of the breaking of the film is automatically thrown into position to cut off the rays of light from the projector; and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Ha vin fully described my invention, what I ciiim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a moving picture apparatus, the combination with a shield located between theprojector and the film, of a roller against which the film bears. and mechanical means permanently connecting said roller with said shield, whereby the film, through said roller and connecting means, normally serves to support the shield in inoperative position and the breaking of the film will release said roller and permit the shield to move into operative position.
2. In a moving picture apparatus, the combination with a pivoted support carry ing a shield which is located between the projector and the film, of a roller against which the film bears, and mechanical means permanently connecting said roller with said shield support whereby the film, through said roller and connecting means, normally serves to support the shield in inoperative position and the breaking of the film will release said roller and permit the shield to drop into operative position.
3. In a moving picture apparatus, the combination with a ivoted support carrying a shield which is located between the projector and the film, of a rock shaft provided with a roller against which the film bears, and mechanical means permanently connecting said rock shaft and said support, whereby the film through said roller, rock shaft and connecting means, normally serves to support the shield in inoperative position and the breaking of the film will release said roller and permit the shield to move into operative position.
4. In a moving picture apparatus, the combination with a standard, of a rod pivotally mounted therein and provided with an arm, a shield secured to said rod and located between the projector and the film, a rock shaft Provided with a roller against which the film bears, an arm provided on said rock shaft, and means connecting the rock shaft arm and rod arm, whereby said film normally serves to support said shield in inoperative position and the breaking of the film will re ease said shaft to permit said shield to pa into operative position.
