WEATHER-STRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon L. BODY, of the city of London, in the county of MiddleseX, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Weather- Strip, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a shiftable weather strip in connection with revolving windows capable of being retracted for allowing the window to revolve but assuming its position for forming an air-tight joint and preventing the window from revolving when desired to slidably operate the window.
A further object is to provide a shiftable weather strip for a combined slidable and revoluble window having a locking catch for retaining the strip in its normal operative position.
A still further object is to provide a combined bearer and plate for a shiftable weather strip adapted to slidably mount the strip thereon and to lock the same against either longitudinal or transverse movements when in its operative position as a coldproof joint and at which time the window is slidably movable but is restrained by the strip from any revolving movement.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a horizontal transverse sectional view through portions of two window sashes and the window frame, the same being provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the present strip and accompanying elements as locked in its operative position. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the strip in its inoperative position. Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof with the plate detached from the casing. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the combined bearer and plate detached. Fig. 6 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 7 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 8 is an end view of the weather bar, and Fig. 9 is a form of metal bar adapted for fire proof windows.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the window casing consisting of an outer and inner lining 10 and 11 respectively connected by the pulley stile 12 is illustrated having an upper sash l3 and a lower sash l4 slidably mounted therein and with the parting strip 15 therebetween and an inside stop-bead 16 interiorly of the window.
The outer or upper sash 13 has its running bars, one of which is illustrated at 26, slidably mounted in the casing and pivotally connected by the screw 27 to the sash for allowing a turning of the sash revolubly relatively of the said running bars, while the lower sash has a similar running bar 17 to which such sash is pivoted by the trunnion screw 18.
The combined bearer and plate 19 as illustrated in Fig. 5. is provided in plurality for each of the sashes and is for the purpose of mounting the weather bar or strip 20 shiftably thereon, such strip being preferably of the form illustrated in Fig. 8. The strip is preferably formed of a metal base] 21 having a metal strip member 22 mounted perpendicularly thereon, the said strip being adapted for seating within the longitudinal groove 28 of the sashes. A wooden bar 24 rectangular in cross section is mounted upon the base 21 in contact with the strip 22 and thus forms the complete weather strip to which is flatly mounted a felt strip 25 secured to the inner face of the base 21, and between the base and bar 24.
The bearer and plate members 19 have each a base 28 by which they are secured to the window casing, countersunk therein, by screws 29 and in such a position as to place the bearing arm 30 and the catch plate 31 of each in vertical alinement within a cut-out portion 32 of the running bar of the sashes. The bar 24 of each strip is cut-away as at 33 and has a plate 34 secured thereover,
while the bearing arm and catch plate project therebeneath. The plate 3% has an inwardly projecting bearing shaft 35 which rides upon the upper face of the bearing arm 30, slidably, so that the entire strip may be freely moved inwardly and outwardly by sliding the same upon the said arm.
Ihe plate 3% is provided with alongitudinal slot 86 through which projects a pin 37 carried by a slide plate 38 which is mounted upon the fixed plate 3% and has a finger-hold knob 39, by means of which the slide plate may be longitudinally shifted and also serving as a means for transversely shifting the entire carrying weather strip. The catch plate 31 is provided with opposite recesses a0, the upper one of which is adapted to re ceive the pin 37 of the shiftable plate when the weather strip is inwardly and operatively positioned as best illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the same relative position of the strip being shown in Fig. 1 with respect to the upper sash.
The complete elements are substantially identical for both sashes, it being noted that the running bar of each is provided with a cut-away portion 11 to accommodate the lateral shifting of the base plate and felt strip of the weather strip, while in the upper sash the parting strip 15 is provided with a corresponding longitudinal groove a2 and with the lower sash the stop-head 16 is provided with a similar longitudinal groove 13.
With the elements positioned as shown in Fig. 1, itwill be seen that the weather strip is locked by means of the pin 87 engaging the catch plate after the manner shown in Fig. 2 and in which position, reference now being had to the upper sash, the strip 22 enters the slot 23 of the sash and forms a weather-proof tight jointwhile the sash is freely shiftable up and down but is prevented from revolving by the said strip 22 being within the sash slot 23, while the felt 25 will engage the edge of the sashes and the strip within the cut-out portions 41. It being understood that the parting strip and bead are each provided with cut-away portions 44 to allow access to the actuating knobs 39, it will be seen that an up vard movement exerted upon such knob will elevate the shiftable plate 38 and disengage the pin 37 from the catch plate whereupon the entire weather strip may be laterally forced toward the window casing. Such outward inoperative position of the weather strip is illustrated in Fig. 1 with respect to the lower sash and it will be evident that the strip 22 may be moved from the slot 23 of the sash and that the sash is rendered free to revolve. The engagement of the shaft 35 within the hook 31 prevents any longitudinal movement of the strip during the sliding movement of the window.

A metal plate 4:7 is secured to the wooden strip l8 and extends laterally thereto while a fe t packing strip d6 is secured between the members 47 and 4:8.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described, are what are believed to be the preferred embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, it being also understood that similar arrangements of weather strips are employable at the opposite side of the sashes.

A device of the class described, comprising a window casing, a revoluble sash mounted therein and having a longitudinal slot and a cut-away portion, a mounting member secured countersunk within said casing, an inwardly projecting bearing arm mounted upon said member and terminating in a hook, a catch plate carried by said member and positioned beneath said hook, a weather strip slidably mounted upon said arm and engageable with said hook when inwardly positioned engaging the said slot, and a pin carried by the weather strip adapted for engagement with the catch plate when said strip is outwardly positioned.
A window construction, comprising a window casing, a revoluble sash slidably mounted therein and having a longitudinal side slot, a mounting member secured to said casing, an inwardly projecting bearing arm upon said member terminating in a hook, a catch plate upon said member in vertical alinement with said arm and having anotch in the top thereof in vertical alinement with said hook, a weather strip laterally shiftable and adapted for engaging said slot when inwardly positioned, a bearing shaft upon said strip slidably mounted upon said arm and receivable within said hook, and locking means upon said strip engageable with said plate notch when the strip is outwardly positioned.
