Description

UNITED g'rn'rns PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD A. JACKSON AND SAMUEL GISSINGER, OF PITTSBURGH, PA.
lMPROVEM ENT IN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,850, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD A. JACKSON and SAMUEL GISSINGER, both of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Concrete Pavements; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
In constructing our improved concrete pavement we make a foundation of boards, (soaked in a strong brine of salt and water.) We then cover the board foundation with a layer of blastfurnace cinder, the cinder being in small lumps, about the size of an American walnut and the layer being about four inches deep. We then coat the cinder with coal-tar, after which we cover this first layer with a second layer formed of finer cinder, ninety parts iron turnings, or the oxide of iron pulverized, six parts; lime, made from oyster-shells, four parts 5 the whole being thoroughly mixed together so as to form one mass, which mixed mass we spread over the first layer of coarse cinder to the depth of two or more inches, pressing it down with a heavy iron roller; after which we sprinkle the rolled surface with a solution of sal-ammoniac water, consisting of about ninety-five parts water and five parts sal-ammoniac. After the rolled surface has been sprinkled so that the entire surface is wet with the solution, we again pass over it with the heavy iron roller, and again sprinkle the rolled surface with the sal-ammoniac water; the pavement thus formed is allowed to dry and set, which will soon be the case, after which it is ready for use. A pavement constructed in the manner and with the ingredients herein described will be very hard and durable.
Having thus described the construction of our improvement in concrete pavements, what we claim as our invention is- Apavement or road constructed of the material herein described, said material being treated and used in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
R. A. JACKSON. WVitnesses: S. GISSINGER.
