TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, WILDRIGH WINTERHALTER, formerly of Munich, Bavaria, but now of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improved Flooring or Paving-Tiles and Building-Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention consists, first, of a paving or flooring-tile or building-block, composed of pulverized bricks and common brick-clay, mixed together, moulded, Subjected to pressure, and burnt, all as described hereafter; second, in combining with the said tiles or blocks an outer coating of pulverized quartz and brick powder.

A tile or block thus formed is .of the most tough and durable character, with an especially hard surface, and can be used to advantage inpaving streets, sidewalks, &c.

I will now proceed to describe fully the manner'of carrying out my invention.

I take ordinary bricks, (the waste,over-burnt, or fractured bricks unfit for building purposes being selected on the ground of economy,) and reduce them to a comparatively fine powder by any of the ordinary grinding or pulverizing machines. About one part of this pulverized brick I intimately mix \vith about six parts of ordinary brick-clay, and submit the composition to the action of a. pug-mill, or other equivalent apparatus, by which it may be reduced to a mass of the consistency proper to be admitted to and formed into shape by moulds; When the moulded tiles or slabs have become nearly dry they are subjected to a pressure, so that the composi* tion may be condensed in a solid mass of the desired shape, after which the blocks are thoroughly dried and then burnt in an appropriate kiln or furnace.

The slabs or tiles thus produced are intensely hard and tough, so much so that they can be used to advantage in place of ordinary paving-stones for streets, aswell as for paving sidewalks and floorings subjected to great wear and tear. p

The tiles may be of any desired shape which the nature of their intended use may suggest as the most appropriate. For ordinary pavement Ihave found slabs of about eight inches square and two inches thick to be serviceable, the upper surface being indented at suitable intervals, and in such a manner, as to prevent slipping.

If deemed advisable the tiles may be connected together by mortise and tenon, so that the uniformity of the upper surface maybe maintained. I I I The proportions of the pulverized brick and clay may bevaried according to the nature of the latter, which may be such as to demand the admixture of pulverized quartz. In all cases Iprefer to sprinkle over the moulds a. plentiful supply of the pulverized quartz and brick powder combined, so that it may be compressed into and form a portion of the outer surface of the tile or building-block, whichis thus rendered more hard and durable at the pointsjivhere these qualities are most desirable, while the inner portion of the tile retains its tough property,

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A paving or flooring-tile or building-block, composed of pulverized bricks and ordinary brick-clay mixed together, moulded, subjected to pressure, and burnt, as set forth. I

2. Combining with the said tiles or blocks an outer coating of pulverized quartz and brick powder as set forth.
