Description

P. KING. TIE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-14,1915. 1 1 98,45 5 Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
O m a U UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIOE.
LAWRENCE 1?. KING, OF PIQUA, KANSAS.
TIE-HOLDER.
Application filed December 14, 1915. Serial No. 66,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE P. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piqua, in the county of Woodson, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Tie-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a tie holder, and has for its object to provide a novel construction of clip which can be detachably applied to the head of a collar button and will engage the knot of the necktie in such a manner as to hold it securely in proper position and prevent it from slipping down below the collar button.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a tie holding clip which can be inexpensively formed from a single length of wire, which can be easily and quickly placed in position upon a collar button or removed therefrom, which will not mutilate or injure the tie, and which will provide an effective means for holding the tie in proper position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through the front portion of a collar and neckband, showing the manner of applying the tie holder to the collar button and the manner in which the tie knot is engaged by the tie holder. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of a collar button, showing a tie holder constructed in accordance with the invention, applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the tie holder removed from the collar button. Fig. 4; is a rear elevation of the tie holder removed from the collar button.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the reference Specification of Letters Patent.
character A designates a collar button which is of the conventional construction, terminating at the forward end thereof in a circular head 1. The tabs of the collar B will be fitted upon the collar button in the usual manner and the necktie C used in the ordinary way.
The tie holding clip may be conveniently formed from a single length of spring wire, the middle portion of the wire being coiled at 2 to provide a small substantially circular lip which fits around the upper edge of the head 1 of the collar button. After forming the coil 2, the'two strands of wire are bent to form the spaced and substantially parallel arms 3 which are designed to straddle the shank of the collar button and extend across the top of the head 1 thereof. The lower ends of the arms 3 are returned to provide the hook members t which fit around and engage the lower edge of the head 1 of the collar button. These hooks d terminate in prongs 5 which are offset laterally in opposite directions and project upwardly on opposite sides of the collar button. 'These prongs 5 are sharpened and are designed to engage the knot of the necktie C so as to hold the same in position and prevent it from slipping down below the collar button.
The arms 3 are adapted to have the lower ends thereof sprung apart when placing the clip upon the head of a collar button or removing it therefrom, the resiliency of the coil 2 admitting of the arms being sprung sufficiently far apart for this purpose without impairing or weakening the spring action of the wire. This coiled lip 2 is returned so as to form in effect an upper hook member for engaging the top of the collar button head 1 and cooperating with the lower hook members 4. to hold the clip securely in position upon the collar button. When the clip is properly positioned over the collar button and forcibly pressed downwardly thereon, the curved upper edges of the head 1 will engage the lower hook members 4 and deflect the arms 3 apart until the device is in proper position, when the resiliency of the device will spring the arms 3 toward each other and cause the lower hook members 4: to come into engagement with the lower edge of the collar button head, The prongs 5 may then be caused to engage the knot of the necktie, and the necktie will thus be securely held in proper position. By first springing the lower hook members it slightly apart the clip can be readily lifted from position upon the collar button. The use of the clip will also prevent any possibility of the tabs of the collar B be coming accidentally disengaged from the collar button.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is
1. A tie holding clip formed from a single length of spring wire and including a pair of spaced and substantially parallel arms adapted to straddle the shank of a collar button, a looped wire portion connecting the upper ends of the arms and returned forwardly to hook over the upper edge of the collar button head, outwardly projecting hook members at the lower ends of the arms for engagement with the lower edge of the collar button head, said lower hook members being adapted to be sprung apart when placing the device in position upon a collar button or removing it therefrom, and tie engaging prongs projecting upwardly from the extremities of the lower hook members.
2. A tie holding clip formed from a single length of spring wire and including a pair of spaced and substantially parallel arms adapted to straddle the shank of a collar button, a fiat coiled spring portion connecting the upper ends of the arms and returned forwardly to hook over the edge of the collar button head, outwardly projecting hook members at the lower ends of the arms for engagement with the lower edge of the collar button head, said lower hook members being adapted to be sprung apart when placing the device in position upon a collar button or removing it therefrom, the resiliency of the coiled spring portion serving to normally spring the arms toward each other, and upwardly extending laterally offset tie engaging prongs projecting from the extremities of the lower hook members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
