To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVARREN E. CAREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of ()hio, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a pump of that general type which embodies a plunger mounted to rotate and to move endwise, the endwise movement of the plunger effecting the pumping operation and the rotation of the plunger serving to close the inlet and outlet ports.
The invention aims to provide novel means whereby an endwise movement in opposite directions may be imparted to the plunger, by the use of cams, thereby avoiding the use of springs for imparting a longitudinal movement to the plunger in either direction.
Another object of the invention is to increase the capacity of the pump, by so constructing the same that both ends of the plunger will be eli'ective.
It is within the province of the disclosure to provide novel means whereby the actuating cams for the plunger may be adjusted circumferentially, thereby to enable the cams to impart properly to the plunger, alongitudinal reciprocating movement.
It is within the scope of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described in Figs. 3 and 1 being at right angles to each other; Fig. 5 is a fragmental cross section on the line 55 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 1s a Specification of Letters Patent.

The device forming the subject matter of this application may be variously constructed without jeopardizing the utility of the invention, and a skilled mechanic having before him the showing of the drawings and the following description may make divers departures without rendering the device useless or inoperative. Bearing in mind that large latitude is desired as to structural details, there is shown in the drawings, by way of illustration, a base 1 1nto which projects the lower end of a cylinder 2 having a longitudinal slot 3 located above the base. In one side face of the base 1 there is a recess 4; adapted to receive the head 5 of a set screw 6 passing through the wall of the cylinder 2 and constituting a means for holding the cylinder in place on the base. The set screw 5 engages a bearing 7 inserted into what may be denominated the lower end of the cylinder 2 assuming, as is not obligatory, that the cylinder 2 is vertically disposed. By loosening the screw 6, the bearing 7 may be adjusted circumferentially, the reason for adjusting the hearing 7 circumferentially being more clearly understood when the entire construction of the device is comprehended. The bearing 7 is provided with a central recess 8 defining a marginal flange 9, the upper edge of which is shaped to form a cam 10. Inserted into the upper end of the cylinder 2 is a bearing 11 having a cap 12 which overhangs the upper end of the cylinder 2, the bearing 11 being held in place by a set screw 14 threaded into the cylinder. The bearing 11 has a central recess 15 defining a marginal flange 16, the lower edge of which is shaped into a cam 17. Intermediate its ends, the cylinder 2 is supplied with an inlet 18 and with an outlet 19.
Mounted to rotate and to move endwise in the cylinder 2 and conforming closely to the bore of the cylinder is a plunger 20 having a spiral gear 21 which is accessible through the slot 8 in the cylinder 2 The upper end of the plunger 20 is provided, at one side, with a trough-shaped lip 22 having a longitudinal channel 23, the lip being rounded at its upper end as shown at 2a, to cooperate with the cam 17. The lower end of the plunger 20 is provided with a similar lip 25 rounded as shown at 26 to cooperate with the cam 10.

- it being necessary merely that some efficient means be provided for rotating the plunger 20. When the plunger 20 is rotated, the lip 22 covers the outlet 19 and is in open relation to the inlet 18. Liquid thereupon passes through the inlet 18 into the cylinder 2. A continued rotation of the plunger 20 causes the lip 22 to cover the inlet 18 and to uncover the outlet 19. When the plunger 20 is rotated, the rounded end 26 of the lip 25, cooperating with the cam 10 raises the plunger 20 and forces the liquid out of the outlet 19. A continued rotation of the plunger 20 causes the rounded end 7 2d of the lip 22 to cooperate with the cam 17,
whereupon the plunger 20 will be positively forced in a downward direction. It is to be observed that by the construction above 7 outlined, no springs are necessary and, further, the device is quite devoid of movable valves.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, a slight modification of the invention has been shown. In the said figure, parts previously described are designated by reference numerals hereinbefore used with the suffix a. The only modification in this form of the invention consists in providing an additional inlet 31 and an additional outlet 32, the inlet and the outlet cooperating with the lower end of the plunger-20, so that the capacity of the pump is doubled. The screws 14 and 6 may be loosened at any time to permit a circumferential adjustment of the !upper thrust bearing 11 and to permit a circumferential adjustment of the lower thrust bearing 7 to the end that the cams 17 and 10 may be set properly with respect to each other.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed is 1. In a pump, a cylinder having inlet and outlet ports; a plunger mounted to rotate and to move endwise in the cylinder, the plunger having at one end a lip controlling the ports when the plunger is rotated; cams in the cylinder, the cams cooperating respectively with the lip and with the other end of the plunger to impart positive endwise movement to the plunger in opposite directions when the plunger is rotated; and means for rotating the plunger.

In a pump, a cylinder having inlet and outlet ports; a plunger mounted to rotate and to move endwise in the cylinder, the plunger having at one end a lip controlling the ports when the plunger is rotated; circumferentially adjustable cams in the cylinder, the cams cooperating respectively with the lip and with the other end of the plunger to impart endwise movement to the plunger when the plunger is rotated; means for holding the cams in adjusted positions; and means for rotating the plunger.
3. In a pump, a cylinder having an inlet port and an outlet port adjacent one end and provided with an inlet port and with an outlet port adjacent its other end; a plunger mounted to rotate and to move endwise in the cylinder, the plunger having at its ends lips controlling respectively the inlet and the outlet port adjacent one end of the cylinder, and the inlet and the outlet port adjacent the other end of the cylinder, when the plunger is rotated; abutments in the.
