To all whom it maycoacem:
in locking means for demountable wheelrims, and pertains more especially to means for locking a tire-receiving demountable rim in position on the felly band of a vehicle-wheel.
The primary object of this invention is to provide locking means of the character indicated comprising a rigid member which is instrumental in looking the demountable rim in position on the felly band and extends betweenthe felly band and said rim, and to have the said band and said locking member so contoured and relatively arranged that said locking member and the felly-band have interlocking portions ar ranged to prevent displacement of said looking member outwardly from between the felly band and said rim.
Another object is to avoid the necessity of using bolts and nuts or similar devices in holding the demountable rimin place on the folly-band.
Another object is to render the aforesaid locking member of my improved locking means capable of being conveniently manipulated to remove it from between the fellyband and the demountable rim.
With these objects in View, and to the end of attaining any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and relative arrangement of parts,
hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a wheel having a demountable tireca-rrying rim mounted on the felly-bandof the wheel and held in position on the fellyband by locking means embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. t is a perspective view of the removable serrated locking member of my improved rim-locking means.- Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are drawn on a larger scale than Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, A indicates the felly of a vehicle-wheel. The felly A is provided with a fixed circumferentially extending metal rim or band a which is provided at one side of the felly with an outwardly projecting circumferentially extending flange 5 and at the other side of the said felly with an outwardly projecting circumferentiatly extending tooth-forming projecting member 6.
B indicates the demountable rim vided in the usual manner with a tire C, and said demountable rim extends circumferentially of the felly-band a and is seated on said band between the flange 5 and the projection 6.
My improved means for locking the de mountable rim B in position on the follyband a is shown as comprising several rigid non-rotatable locking members D each of which preferably has a wedge-forming por tion (Z extending between said band and the demountable rim, and saidlocking members are spaced circumferentially of the folly. The demountable rim has outwardly projecting side flanges 7, and the flange 5 of the folly-band extends opposite the outer side of one of said flanges of the demountable rim, and each locking member 1) eX- tends, as at 8, opposite the outer side of the other of said flanges of the demountable I'lln.
Each locking member D consists preferably of a single casting and exte'nds transversely of the rim-projection 6 and is provided at its folly-band engaging face with a recess 10 which extends substantially straight inwardly from the outenextremity and preferably from end to end of said looking member, and said recess is arranged therefore opposite the circumference of the felly-band.
Each locking member D is provided at each side of its recess 10 with teeth 12- arranged in a row extending transversely of the folly-band o; and consequently transversely of the circumference of said band.
Said rows'of teeth 12 are shown arranged therefore longitudinally of said recess, and the teeth of each of said rows are spaced therefore at their free extremities longitudinally of said recess and consequently locking member outwardly from between the felly-band and the demountable rim so that the felly-band and said locking member at a plurality of points have interlocking members or portions arranged to prevent such displacement of said locking member.
In the preferred-construction illustrated band has opposite sides thereof overlapped by teeth of each locking member D at each side of the recess 10 111 said locking memher, and that said recess is more especially important in that it enables the insertion at said recess of a metal. bar or tool (not shown) employed to lift or displace said locking member in the direction required to disengage said locking member from the projection 6 of the folly-band a, and render said locking member conveniently manipulated to remove it from between said band and the demountable rim.
My improved locking means for demountable wheel-rims is exceedingly simple, convenient and eiiicient, and obviously the necessity of using bolts and nuts or similar devices for holding the demountable rim in place on the felly-band is successfully avoided.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with the felly of a vehicle-wheel, and a metal band extendingcircumferentially of the felly and having an outwardly projecting circumferentially extending flange at one side of the folly, and a demountable rim on said band between said flange'and the opposite side of the felly, of
side of the fell y, and said locking member and the folly-band having interlocking portions arranged to prevent displacement of said locking member outwardly from between the felly-band and the demountable rim.
2. Thecombination, with the folly of a vehicle-wheel, and a metal band extending circumferentially of the felly and having an outwardly projecting circumferentiallv extending flange at one side of the folly and provided with an outwardly projecting circumferentially extending tooth-forming member at the other side of the folly, and a demountable rim on said band between said flange and. the opposite side of the folly, of several rigid non-rotatable members instrumental in locking the demountable rim in position on said band and extending transversely of said band, between said band and the demountable rim, each locking member having a portion thereof overlapping the inner side of the aforesaid circumferentially extending tooth-forming member 'o' the felly-band.
3. he combination, with the felly of a vehicleqvheel, and a metal band extending circumferentially of the fell y and having an outwardly projecting circumferentially extending flangeat one side of the felly, and a demountable rim on said band between said flange and the opposite side of the fell y, of several rigid members instrumental in looking the demountable rim in position on said band and extending transversely of said hand between said. band and the demountable rim, each locking member and said band being provided the one with two teeth spaced at their free extremities transversely of said band and the other with a. member projecting between said teeth.
4. The combination, with the folly of a vehicle-wheel, and a metal band extending circumferentially of the telly and having an outwardly projecting circumferentially extending flange at one side of the telly, and a demountable rim on said band between said flange and the opposite side of the folly,
of several rigid members instrumental in locking the demountable rim in position on said band and extending transversely of said band between said band and the demountable rim, each locking member being provided at its felly-band-engaging face with two teeth spaced at their free extremities transversely of said band, and said band having a member projecting between said teeth.
The combination, with the folly of a vehicleavheel, and a metal band extending circumferentially of the folly and having an outwardly projecting cironmfiarentially extending flange at one side of the folly, and a demountable rim on said hand between said flange and the opposite side of the folly, of several rigid members instrumental in locking the demountable rim in position on said band and extending transversely of said hand between said band and the dcmountable rim, each locking memberbeing provided with teeth aranged in a row extending transversely of said band and having a recess arranged at one side and extending longitudinally of said row of teeth,

The combination, with the felly of a vehicle-Wheel, and a metal band extending circumferentially of the felly and having an outwardly projecting circumferentially' extendingfiange at one side of the telly, and a demountable rim on said band between said flange and the opposite side of the felly, of several rigid members instrumental in locking the demountable rim in position on said band and extending transversely of said band between said band and the de-- with a recess, and said locking member and the telly-band having interlocking portions at each side of said recess, said interlocking portions being arranged to prevent displacement of said locking member outwardly from between the felly-band and the demountable rim.
