Description

CHARLES A. GALE.
lmprovement in Apparatus for Fixing Photographs.
Patented Oct 10, 1871.
fiza'erzfar UNITED STATES CHARLES A. GALE, or PIQUA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR FIXING PHOTOGRAPHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,753, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs A. GALE, of Piqua, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Fixing Negatives and Ferrotypes; and I hereby deelare the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct a box of suitable size, made of wood, tin, or any other suitable material, as represented by Figure 1 of the drawing, with a partition in the center extending from the bottom to one-half or two-thirds the distance to the top of the box. Over the top of this partition are slats extending from one end of the box to the other, with aperture at one end of the box, to which is attached an apron or shelf, as repre- "sented by H of the drawing, for the purpose of holding the slide-pan G O O O of drawing. I also construct a partition immediately over the one described, extending from the top of the box down, leaving only suffieient space for the slide pan to pass. I cover the box with glass top, to allow the operator to see the picture while in process of fixing. The back or rear apartment of the box is made to hold the fixing solution of cyanide of potassium, and the front apartment for washing the picture. A tube, A, enters the back apartment near the top with or without a sprinkler, connecting said apartment with the vessel F containing the fixing solution. Also, a tube, B, with or without a sprinkler, enters the front apartment, connecting said apartment with a water-tank or vessel, G. I construct a slidepan, 0, of any suitable material and shape, with a handle to carry the picture under the fixing solution and water-tubes. At the bottom of the fixing-solution apartment is attached a faucet, D, by means of which the solution, after passing off the picture, may be drawn off and returned to the fixing-solution vessel. (See D of drawing.) There is a pipe attached to the bottom of the front or water-apartment of the box, marked E, to carry off the water used for washing pictures.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The fixing apparatus, as herein described, for the purpose of protecting the operator from i11- halin g the fumes from the poisonous fixing solution while fixing the picture, and also prevent ing the diffusion of the fumes through the darkroom and gallery.
CHARLES A. GALE.
