Be it known that I, HALCOLM ELLIS, a

The machine of my aforesaid application may be conditioned for the performance of addition in either or both of the accumulators lators by using the operating keys and a by the use of certain controlling keys which I denominate operating keys or by setting the traveling platen carrying carriagein tabulating position, or items may be listed or printed without being added into either or both of the accumulators by the use of anon-add key. g \Vhen it is desired to simultaneously or conjointly add the items into both accumutotal is thereafter desired to be taken from either accumulator, unless the remaining accumulator is first disconnected from the racks or actuators, the act of taking a total results in adding that total into the other accumulator and gives a false condition in the second accumulator.
' In the machine of my aforesaid application, the control of the accumulators by the lators for addition according to the nature of the stop employed on the carriage. If

then,'with both accumulators conditioned for addition by the tabulated position of the carriage, a total is taken from one accumulator by the use of the proper operating in that machine, if the carriage is moved from tabulating position before the total is taken, the fictitious result in the second accumulator will not follow when a total or sub-total key is depressed.
In the machine of my aforesaid application, if an accumulator is set or conditioned for addition, it will add, regardless. of whether the actuators or racks are limited in their travel by the key-board or by another accumulator and this is the reason why if both accumulators are in engagement with print items without adding them, either.
when the carriage is in tabulating position or when one or both accumulators are set for addition by the operating keys, it is necessary to hold the non-add key depressed by the finger if more than one item is to be listed without being added.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide in a multiple accumulator adding machine wherein the accumulators may be individually or conjointly causedtov engage actuators for the purpose of addition, means whereby when the accumulators are conjointly engaged with the actuators for adding into all of them simultaneously, if so desired, on the taking of a total'from any one of the accumulators, all other accumulators will be automatically placed in a nonadd condition so that the takin of the total from the given accumulator wi l in'no manwhich accumulator is controlled thereby, the
- devices which control the setting of the action by the adding keys, the stop on the cumulators in adding position are blocked against operation, and hence, the total or sub-total is taken without disturbing the condition of the other accumulators.
In the present invention, the independent operation of the non-add key is in no manner interfered with and such key may be depressed for the listing and printing, without adding, of any item or items. Preferably, the same blocking device is utilized to cooperate with the non-add key that is controlled by the total and sub-total keys.
When thetotal or sub-total key is restored, after taking the total or sub-total, the controlling mechanism for the accumulators is a unblocked and the machine'is then restored to the condition where the accumulators may receive further additions.

To that end, I provide means adapted to block the devices which control the accumulators for purposes of addition, such means being set into position to prevent addition when the carriage is in tabulating position. 'A stop is provided on the carriage which is adapted, through appropriate intermediate means, to shift the blocking non-add device or lever just as it is shifted when the non-add-key or the sub-total or. total keys are depressed. Consequently if the carriage is moved to nonadd position when either or both of the accumulators happens to be set for addicarriage operates the blocking mechanism and all of the accumulators are locked so that they cannot operate. Another stop having two points may be employed on the carriage (as in my aforesaid application) so that the latches for the accumulator controllers will be released when the carriage is in adding tabulating positionand, in that event, there will be no automatic blocking,
by carriage control, of the accumulator controllers.
Means are provided for automatically unlocking the handle or the starting bar, as the case may be, by the depression of a total. or sub-total key, or the non-add key, and when the carriage is in non-add tabulating position. Provision is thus made for tion.
The embodiment of the invention hereinafter set forth and disclosed in the drawings is for the purpose of identifying the improvements with the machine of my 00- pending application, Serial No. 470,108,

My improvements might be utilized onv other machines and the disclosure is, therefore, to be considered asillustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope of the invention.

representing numerals 1 to 9 inclusive There are nine rows of keys similar to those shown. The keys are raised by springs K80 and are provided with stops K23. There are nine racks or actuators R50 having steps arranged Vernier fashion in such manner that the engagement of a rackR50 with any stop K23v will permit a definite extent of sliding movement of the, rack R50. For instance, if key stem K54 is depressed and the rack ESQ-moved to the rear until it ongages, the stop K23 on stem K54, there would result a movement of four teeth of those shown at'RO past the bar R92. If,
at this time, the adding wheel A50 is made to engage the rack R50, and the latter is then restored so that it assumes the posi tion shown in Fig. 1, the adding wheel A50 will be rotated a distance of four teeth.

MuZtz'pZc adding sect2'0n.The mechanism of the duplex or multiple accumulator being the same as set forth in my co-pending application aforesaid, only sufiicient description is given to afford a clear understanding of the relation of-my improvements thereto. This mechanism is a complete unit, the lefthand end thereof appearing, as shown in Fig. 2; and with its case attached as at the left of F ig. 3'. The showing of the adding mechanism at the right of'Fig. 1 is partly in dotted lines for the purpose of better illustrating the movements of the frames which carry the adding wheels and the operation thereof. There are two sets of adding wheels A50, respectively adapted to engage the upper and lower teeth R50. Either set 'ment up and down.

The setsofadding wheels are mounted in swinging frames A48 pivoted at 16A and having a limited swinging move- The shafts A2 of the adding wheels A50 project beyond the sides of the frames A48 and have suitable rollers operating in the cam slots of two cams A59 and 59A, respectively, the cams being carried by shafts A1 and 1A for the purpose of bringing the addingiwheels A50 into and out of engagement with the racks R50. The
shafts A1 and 1A are turned by. suitable cranks A67 and A68 and are held at each end of the stroke by the detents A69. The carrying mechanism for the respective sets of adding wheels A50 embodies, in part, devices shown at A52, A53, A54 and A56; also pieces A49 and 49A pivoted at A16, whose operation it is unnecessary to set forth, as these parts constitute no part of my present improvements and are fully disclosed in my co-pending application aforesaid. The machine is provided with a handle and operative connections, not shown, for
putting. it through its cycle of operations in adding, listing, and taking totals and subtotals. The power is applied to the shaft O1 on which is secured the irregular plate D50 whose movement, underdilferent conditions which can be predetermined, con trols the inovement of the accumulators into and out of engagement with the racks 50R.
Operating or controlling /ceg s.Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the keys which are shown at K61, K62, K63, K64, K65, K66, K67, K68,
K69, are termed operating keys because the depression of any one of them in conjunction with the operation of the handle or power means causes the machine to perform some special function or to entirely omit that function. The key K61 is a releasekey for releasing any numeral key or any other operating keys which have been previously depressed; K62 is a repeat key whose function is to prevent the release of the numeral keys by the operation of the handle so that an item may be repeated; K63 is the total key for the upper set of accumulators; K64 is the subtotal key for the same set of accumulators; K65 is the adding key for the upper set of accumulators.
The total key for the lower set of accumulators is shown at K66; the subtotal key for the same set of accumulators at K67; K68 is the' adding key, for the lower set of accumulators. K69 is the non-add key. These keys are spring raised.-
Total keys and sub-total keys are made interlocking and the non-add ,key made interlocking with the total keys by means of.

illcrms for setting accumulators.Pivot ally carried by the plate D50 at D14 are the i flying levers D53 and D54, the first of which is connected to the-crank A67 by the link D56 and the latterto the crank A68 by the link D57. If these levers are not arrested, the movement'of the piece D50 by the turningof shaft 01 will not cause the cranks A67 or A68 to swing, and consequently, the sets of adding wheels of the two accumulators will not engage the racks of the actu- 'ators R50. The respective levers carry pivotally mounted hit or miss pieces D51 and D 2 which are retracted by springs D82 against pins on the levers. The controllers for the operation of adding are the pivi oted pieces D58 and D59, respectively controlling the upper and lower accumulators. These pieces D58 and D59 have pins D21 and D22 respectively positioned to be engaged by the hit or miss pieces D51 and ranged to normally engage the controller pieces D58 and D59 to hold them latched. Nhen this condition prevails, the swinging of the piece D50 results in the tails of the hit or miss pieces D51, D52 engaging the pins D21, D22 and the hit or miss pieces are then positioned so that they will not engage the pins D12, and consequently no rigid connection exists between ,the plate D50 and the cranks A67 and A68. Neither accumulator is, therefore, shifted and no addition occurs. If, however, the latch D60, for instance, be disengaged from the piece D58, the spring D81 of the piece D58 moves it and when the piece D50 swings by an operation of the handle of the'machine, the tail of the hit or miss piece D51 is not intertered with and the said piece D51 then engages the stop D12 and a rigid connection consequently ensues, resulting in the shift ing of the link D56 and the engagement of V the upper accumulator with the racks 50R.
To restore the pieces D58 and D59 to latching position, there are provided the parts D66, D67, the former engaging the pins D21, D22, and the latter being engaged by the pivot D14 of lever D53 when the piece D50 assumes the normal position shown in Fig. 3.
The latches D60, D61 are under the control of a stop on the traveling carriage when the latter is in tabulating adding position and they are also controlled by the adding keys K65 and K68 of the respective accumulators.
The adding key K65 is provided with a notch n. A lever L57 has an angular upper end adapted to engage the notch a when key R65 is depressed. ,A spring co-acting with the lever holds its bent end against the key stem K65. The other end of the lever L57 has a pin L23 which engages the righthand end of the latch D60. When the key K65 is depressed, the end of the lever L57 enters notch n and disengages latch D from controller piece D58, which will set the parts for adding in the upper accumulator. Alever 57L performs the same functionas the lever L57 with respect to the adding key K68 for the lower accumulator and the latch D61 for the controlling piece D59.
Releasing the latches D60, D61 in an auto-f matic mannerby the position of the carriage is eiiected through upright links D6 whose lower ends are connected to the latches D60, D61.

Coperating with the total and sub-total keys K63, KM, are levers L56 and 56L, which in turn, have pins L19, L18 adapted to engage cam surfaces on a piece 58L pivoted at L24. When the piece 58L is depressed by the depression of either lever K63 or KM, its coiiperation with a pin L22 on a piece 60L which is pivoted at 19L, causes the elevation of the extreme left-hand end of piece 60L so that it will be in position to engage the lower end of the flying lever D53 and offer an abutment thereto when the piece D50 is turned with the shaft D1. This results in looking the flying lever D53 against the stud D13 and causes movement of the link D56and, adding crank 5.67. Afterward, the lower end of lever D53 passes over the left-hand end of lever 60L and over the upper end of a piece L62 which is pivoted at 19L. 0n the return movement, the lower end of lever D53 trips over the upper end of the piece L62 and the crank A67 is swung D54, and through it, to control the link D57 and crank A68.
A sliding bar L66 is mounted on a swinging cam L54 at its forward end and over a stud L27 near its rear end. The bar L66 has projections p on. its upper edge arranged to engage the upper ends of the latches or levers L56 and L59, so that if the piece L66 be moved to the rear, it will re-set said latches or levers and .thus release the key stems controlled thereby and also the pieces 58L and 59L. Dn the rear end of the bar L66 .is a pivoted lever L67 which "is normally held in the position 'gagement of the latches 56L shown in Fig. 8-by a light spring L84. The rivet 15D on the rear of the plate D50 is adapted to engage the piece L67 on the advance of the piece D50 without having any efiect, 011 the return .stroke of the piece D50, the rivet 15D engages the forward side of the piece L67 and swings it until the upper end thereof engages the stationary pin L29. Further movement en- 'suing, the lever L67 is moved, and with it, the 'bar L66, whereupon the projections 39 disengage the latches before mentioned.
A bar L65 similar to and located just back of bar L66 and, provided with suitable upwardly extending projections p engages the latches 56L and L60 for the sub-total .keys and is pivoted at its rear end to the upper end of a lever L68 whose lower end is located in the path of travel of the inner end of pivot D14 of piece D50. When the plate D50 moves to its extreme forward position, the pin D14 engages the lower end oflever L68 and causes it to move to the rear a sufiicient distance to cause disenand L60 from the key stems K64 and K67.
In the operation of takinga sub-total, the. initiation of movement is the same as for taking'a total, but at theforward'end of' j the movement ofthe plate D50, the pin D14 positively engages the lever L68, which causes retraction of the bar L65 and the release of the sub-total key which has been set. The resumption of initial position of thepiece 60L or 61L prevents it from engaging the lower-end 0f flying lever D53 or D54,
and therefore, the adding crank A67 or A68 will remain in its forward position until, .such time as thepin D13 engages the forward side of the flying lever D53,.for instance. w -i As thus far described, the mechanism is constructed and operates the same as set forth in my co-pending application, Serial No. 470,108, filed December 30, 1908, such description being necessary to a clear understanding of the present improvements which I will. now set forth in detail.
The non-add key .The key K69 is used when it is desired to print; an item which is not a total and is not intended to be added into either of the accumulators. Pivoted at 13L is alatch L158 adapted to enter a notch n in the stem of the non-add key K69 when the latter is depressed andhaving a pin 2 on its lower on Pivoted at 13L is a lockinglever. or latch L58 which is adapted to engage studs 115D and 116D on the members D58 .and D59 when the lefthand end of said lever is elevated. The pin 2 cotiperates with theunderside of the lefthand end of the lever L58, and consequently, when the latch Ll58i's snapped into the notch n in the non-add key, on the depresraised position shown in Fig. 3 and the-locking or blocking lever L58 has not been raised by other means hereinafter set forth, said lever L58 is disengaged from the studs 115D and 116D and the members D58 and D59 are free for conditioning for the performance of addition in either or both accumulators.
This same result-the blocking of the pieces D58 and D59 is accomplished by the de- '0 pression of the non-add key in my co-p'ending application, but the construction here provided is different. i
Prevention of addition when taking a total or sub-t0taZ.In the machine of my c!)- pendingapplication, when a total or subtotal is taken and both accumulators are conditioned for addition, the amount taken from one accumulator will be automatically added into the other accumulator unless the second accumulator is first conditioned to prevent addition by the release of the adding key controlling that accumulator, or, if addition is occurring in both accumulalators, due to the position of the carriage, the latter will have to be spaced out of tabulating position. The present improvements entirely preventadding into the upper acfrom the, lower accumulator, and vice versa, and entirely prevent fictltious results from the cause mentioned. This effect is produced by the provision on the bars L66 and ,L65 of cams or humpsw, x and a pin on the locking lever L58. Normally the pin y is free of the humps or cams w, 00 and consequently, if the carriage is out of tabulating position, the locking lever L58 will be disengaged from the studs115D, 116D, as shown in Fig. 3. Should either of the sub? total keys K64, K67 be depressed, thebar L65 would cause its -camor hump w to engage the pin 3 and elevate the locking.

In this connection it should be understood that if the accumulator is set for addition, it will add regardless of whether the actuators R50 are limited in their travel by the stops K23 on the numeral key stems or, on the other hand, by the amount of rotation permitted in the other accumulator.
If one of the total keys K63 or K66 is depressedfor the purpose of taking atotal, one or the other of the latches L56 or L59 moves and pushes the sliding bar L66, which depressed, has risen, the restoration of the bars L65,.L66 to normal position results in the disengagement of the humps m, at from the pin y and the release of the locking lever L58 from the pieces-D58, D59. The accumulators will, therefore, at once be re-conditioned for addition in both of them.
Printing numbers without addition when the carriage is in tabulating position-1n the machine of my copending application aforesaid, when the traveling platen carrying carriage is in a given tabulating position, the latches D60, D61 are automatically disengaged from the pieces D58, D59 so that as long as the carriage remains in that position, the handle is unlocked and items may be added into both accumulators simultaneously. In taking a total or sub-total in that machine when the carriage is in that position, a fictitious addition occurs in the other accumulator unless the carriage be first spaced out of tabulating position and the appropriate operating keys employed for the purpose desired. A two-point stop similar to the stop G96, Figs. 5, and 7 may be employed for the purpose of addition 'whenthe carriage is in adding tabulating position. Such a stop would have its two points adapted to coiiperate with the points w on the two outside levers F61 which are pivoted at F25 and are engaged with the links D64 of the latches D60, D61 and l do not intend, by the present improvements, to omit "this function of the machine. Such a stop could be placed at any position on the rack C91 carried by the traveling carriage.

To that end, 1 provide a stop C96 which, instead of having only two points, as previously. is provided with but one point t and a bumper block t, as shown in detail in Fig. 7, and to provide an intermediate lever F610, which is engaged with a vertically movable link D640 pivoted at L580 to the locking latch L58. vFor the engagement of lever F610 to place the machine in a non-add condition, the one-point stop C96' shown' in Fig. 7, is placed at any desired point on the rack C91, corresponding to the position where it is desired to list or print, without adding, a series of numbers. When the stop C96 is in that position, the point t engages the point to of the center lever F610, which thereupon,
lifts the link D640 and lifts the left-hand end of the locking lever L58 so that it engages the studs 115D, 116D and effectually blocks any movement of the controller pieces D58, D59, so that addition cannot.- be performed when the carriage is in non-add position even though the accumulators may happen to be set for addition by the adding keys. Immediately thecarriage is spaced away from that posit on, the usual functions of the machine may be carried out.
The tabulating key K10 engages the lever .F67 pivoted at F29 and having an arm F58. A lever F50, pivoted at Fll, is engaged with the arm F58 at 14F. lhe carriage abutment F73 which is adapted to be interposed in the path of the block t on stop C96, is raised and lowered by the lever F50. The escapement mechanism is operatedby the parts F70, F13, F51, F52.
As in the machine of my co-pending application aforesaid, the operating handle of the machine, or the starting bar (if motor driven). is normally locked, but is unlocked by a shaft L1 carrying a piece 51L adapted to cotiperate with the pins D27, D28 on the arm 50L having apin 15L adapted to cooperate with the piece 51L. A spring 81L connects the pieces 50L and 51L. The pins on piece 50L is engaged by the'bars L65,
L66 and also by a projection 3 on the lever L58. Consequently, the operation of any total or sub-total key, the non-add key, or placing the carriage in adding-tabulating, or non-add-tabulatingposition will release the normally locked handle, or, starting bar.

regulable means on the carriage adapted to cooperate with the aforesaid means when the carriage is in difl erent positions to place the accumulator in a non-add condition.

In an adding machine, the combination with an accumulator, of actuators adapted to cooperate therewith, a carriage. a nonadd key, and means common to the carriage and non-add key adapted to place the accumulator in a non-add condition when the non-add key is operated or when the carriage is in a predetermined position.

In an adding machine, the combina' tion with a plurality of accumulators, of actuators adapted to cooperate therewith. a carriage. a non-add key, and means corn mon to both accumulators and to the nonadd key and carriage adapted to place both of the accumulators in a non-add condition when the non-add key is operated or when the carriage is in a predetermined position.

In an adding machine. the combination with a plurality of accumulators adapted to be set for accumulation either in one of them or in a plurality of them simultaneously. of actuators adapted to cooperate with one of .said accumulators, or with a plurality of them simultaneously, independent controlling members for the respective accumulators, total keys for the respective accumulators, a. locking lever adapted, when set, to lock the controlling mergers members, and a sliding bar under the control. of said total keys which sets the locking lever when either total key is operated, thereby placing both accumulators in a' non-add condition when a total is taken from either accumulator.
19. In an adding machine, the combina tion with a plurality of accumulators adapted to be set for accumulation either in one of them or in a plurality of them simultaneously, of actuators adapted to co operate with one of said accumiilators, or with a. plurality of them simult. neously, independent controlling members for the re spective accumulators, sub-total keys for the g0 respective accumulators, a locking lever adapted, when set, to lock the controlling members, and a sliding bar under the control of said sub-total keys which sets the locking lever when either sub-total key is 35 operated, thereby placing both accumulators in a non-add condition when a subtotal is taken from eithe accumulator.
