J'OESIRE S. ROGERS, OF LAUEELHILL, FLORIDA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1916.
Application filed May 3, 1916. Serial No. 95,103.
T 0 all whom it may cmwcm Be it known that I, JOESIRE S. Rooms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurelhill, in the county of Okaloosa, State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Rail-Joint; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved rail joint, an object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this kind, having improved features of construction.
One of the features of construction is the provision of a pocket in the adjacent end of one of the rails to receive an extension tongue on one end of another rail, said pocket and said tongue having portions thereof curved in cross section, and the pocket being open on one side of the rail, so that the extension tongue may be inserted into the pocket laterally by imparting a rotary movement to the rail having the extension tongue.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a horizontal shoulder on the interior of the pocket to be egaged by a similar shoulder on the extension tongue to prevent the rail sections from separating.
In practical fields the details of construc tion may necessitate alterations falling Within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing two rail sections joined by the improved rail joint constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: illustrates views of two rail sections showing the adj acent ends thereof about to be connected.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate two adjacent rail sections. The rail section 1 is provided with a pocket, the bottom of which is horizontal, and this bottom a near the end 5 of said pocket is provided with a horizontal recess 6 and an adjoining shoulder 7 The wall 8 of the pocket extends upwardly and curves over and terminates in a recess 9 and an adjoining shoulder 10. The rail section 2 is provided with an extension tongue 11, which in cross section corresponds in shape with the cross sectional contour of said pocket, therefore, said tongue 11 is provided with a laterally extending tongue 12, to enter the recess 9, when the extension tongue 11 is inserted in said pocket in a lateral direction. The bottom horizontal surface 13 of the extension tongue 11 at its end is provided with a rib 1a, consequently forming a shoulder 15, said rib as will be understood entering the recess 6, so that the shoulder 7 is engaged by the shoulder 15, thereby holding the two rail sections joined.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination of two adjoining rail sections, the end of one rail section having a pocket opening into the rail section from one side thereof, the bottom of said pocket at one end having a recess and an adjoining shoulder, the other rail section having an extension tongue corresponding in shape in cross section with the cross sectional contour of the pocket, and designed to enter and fit the pocket by imparting a partial rotary movement to one of the rail sections, the end of the extension, on its bottom having a rib and an adjoining shoulder to enter the recess of the pocket whereby the two shoulders may engage, to prevent the rail sections from pulling apart longitudinally, and means on the upper adjacent faces of the pocket and the extension tongue to prevent horizontal disconnection of the rail section.
2. The combination of two adjoining rail sections, the end of one rail section having a pocket opening into the rail section from one side thereof, the bottom of said pocket at one end having a recess and an adjoining shoulder, the other rail section having an extension tongue corresponding in shape in cross section with the cross sectional contour of the pocket, and designed to enter and fit the pocket by imparting a partial rotary movement to one of the rail sections, the end of the extension, on its bottom having a rib and an adjoining shoulder to enter the recess of the pocket whereby the two shoulders may engage, to prevent the rail sections from pulling apart longitudinally, and means on the upper adjacent faces of the pocket and the extension tongue to prevent horizontal disconnection of the rail section, said means comprising an overhanging recess in the upper part of the pocket, name to this specification in the presence of said extension tongue having an upwardly two subscribing witnesses.
extending curved tongue to enter said overhanging recess, the upper part of the tongue JOESIRE ROGERS r; and the upper Wall of the pocket having'ad- W'itnesses:
joining shoulders. E. A. DAVIS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my OSCAR STEELE.
