In mining coal the practice is to credit each miner with the actual amount of marketable coal which he loads on the mine cars withi'nthe mine and which is delivered outside the mine vand weighed either before or after dumping. The means for identifying each car load of coal consists of checks bearing the number of the miner lwho loaded the car. Ordinarily, the check v is placed or hooked on the car within the mine and is removed by an authorized -person at the dump.
The present invention is designed to safeguard the miner by positively preventing removal of the check until the dump is reached, thereby preventing an exchange of checks by unscrupulous persons who might profit by such a proceeding.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of two cars equipped with my improved check holders, one car being shown on a horizontal track, and the other on an incline. Fig. 2 is an edge view of my improved check holder, and Fig. 3 a side view thereof with the face plate removed and showing a check or round tag confined within the entrance. Fig. 4L is a cross section on line 4--4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view of the holder in an inclined position with a check released and removably exposed at the front end thereof. Figs. 6 and-7 are side and section views of one form of check, and Fig. S is a perspective view of another form of check.
The holder consists of a recessed body 2 having a separate face-plate 3 screwed or riveted thereto, and forwardly-projecting extensions 4 on said parts provide a detaining pocket 5 for a round flat check 6 when a. check of this kind is released and discharged from the interior of said holder. The entrance 7 for the check is located at the opposite end of the holder and is of irregular outline and provided with osets 8 conforming to the face formation of check 6 which embodies one or more straight shoulders 9 extending transversely from edge to edge thereof, substantially as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, or as disclosed in Fig. 8. To permit the checks to pass through the entrance 7, the shoulders of the check must be alined with the offsets in the entrance, and a similary alinement is necessary to withdraw the check from the interior of the holder by way of said entrance. The accruing advantages are that only a check of the required kind may be inserted into the holder; its introduction is a simple matter; and its withdrawal is made with great difficulty. After the check is passed through the entrance it rides down a slight incline 10 into a depression which has a water-drain opening 11 at its bottom, and is held in this position by the depending stop 12 of a'p'ivoted lever 13. In this way the check is held relatively near the entrance to. prevent the introduction of a second check before the first is removed. But a forward movement of the check cannot occur until the depending stop 12 of the tilting lever 13 is lifted to permit the check to pass underneath the lever through passage 14, and obviously the check will not roll forward then unless theholder body is tilted or inclined downwardly at its front end. `Such tilting of the holder body happens when the mine car A rides down the usual steep incline at the dump, but in the mine all travel of the 'car is on the level or over slight grades, if any.
Lever 13 is pivotally supported near its front end on a stud 15, which places the balance of weight of the lever at its inner end to keep the lever down upon the rest 16 in stop relations with the check 6 regardless of whether the holder body occupies a horizontal or tilted position, and a self-acting lock member 17 is also pivotally supported upon a stud 18 on the body at a point directly above the top projection 19 on the lever to prevent the lever from being tilted or raised at its inner end when the mine car A and the holder thereon are in a horizontally or substantially horizotnal position. However, when the car and its holder come to a pronounced inclined position, the lock member 17 swings forward by gravity out of the path of movement of the projection 19 and then lever 13 may be tilted by finger engagement at its front or outer projecting end, see F ig. 5 to release the check 6 which rolls by gravity into pocket 5 where it may be grasped by the fingers and removed. The operating end of the lever extends forwardly a sufficient distance above the pocket to prevent the check from jumping out on its downward travel. A water-drain opening 19 is provided at the bottom of the pocket and the holder is preferably mounted on the side of the mine car by screws or rivets entered through the several openings 2O in the body and its side plate to cover. The holder and its parts may be made of cast metal, or stamped and pressed of sheet metal, and the construction and arrangement of parts may be modified more or less without departing from the inventive concept herein described.
A further feature of the invention comprises a swinging cap or screw 21 to protect the otherwise open pocket 5 from rain and snow, and which cap or cover is pivotally secured in place on a stud 22 and adapted to be shifted to the raised position seen in Fig. 5.
What I claim is:
l. A check holder comprising a recessed body having a through passage1 a pivoted stop lever opposite the entrance of said passage having a finger-engaging portion eX- tending outside said body opposite the exit of said passage, and a swinging member to effect locking and unlocking of said lever.
2. A check holder having an entrance with an inwardly inclined bottom, a pivoted lever having a stop projection depending from its lower face to engage a check opposite said entrance and an upward projection on its top, in combination with a pivoted gravity lock adapted to swing over said upward projection to eect locking and unlocking of said stop member, the said member having a projecting end adapted to be engaged by the finger of the operator to release the check.
3. A check holder for mine cars comprising a recessed body having a through passage from the rear to front for a check, a lever and a lock in co-acting relations therewith to confine a check within said passage when the said body is in one position and to release the check from said passage when in another position, the said lever having a depending stop for the check in said passage and the said locl pivoted to swing into and out of locking engagement with said lever over the same.
