Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN P. IVARNER AND EDIVIN IV. PAYNE, OF MORRISON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LATCHES AND LOCKS.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,673, (ln-ted October 3, 1871.
To Il Iwhom it may concern.:
I-e, it known that we., MARTIN P. WARNER and EDWIN \V. PAYNr,ot`Morrison, in the. county ot' \Vhitesides :1nd State. ot Illinois, have. invented a new and Improved Door-I'Joek; and we do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, und exact description thereot', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use. thesame, reference being had to the aectmu'nulying` drawing forming,l part otA this specification.
'l.`his invention relates to improvements indoorlocks; and it consists in a bolt in the t'orm otl acircular ring, wit-h about onethird cut out, mounted on ar spindle in trout ot'opening'sin the, case, so that the gravity ol` the bolt will throw the end otl the lower part out into the. keeper, the bolt being locked by a pawl at the. upper side ot' it dropping into a notch in its periphery, said pawl being lit'ted t'roin the outside by zt key and from the inside by a knob or by a handle attached to it and projecting' through the lockcase, all. as hereinafter described.
Figure. 1 is a sectional elevation of' the lock, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on thc line .r .r ot' Fig. l.
Similarletters of reference indicate correspoluling, parts.
A relnesents the bolt, which is made in the form ot' :t ring, ot' metal or other suitable substance, with about one-third cntout at l, and the, ends made thicker radially than the other parts. It is pivoted ou a square knobspindle, O, and has :t long' notch, l) E, in the. periphery, beginning at thel thickened ends I und extending about as t'a-r around from said ends as the bolt is required to turn when used as a latch-bolt. O is a notch iu the pta'iphery, :tbout midway between the ends. II is a puwl for lockingl the bolt. It is pivoted in the ease by means of hollow trunnions I, which fit into zt socket, K, in the trout and back ot' the case, near which, in the back otA the ease, is an opening, L, through which the wards ot' the key pass to litt the pztwl, said key being,` preferably arranged to enter the hole f in the hollow trunnions of the pivot ofthe pa-wl. A
For ordinary use as it latch-bolt the pawl will not be raised out ot' the notch l) E, it bcing'long enough to let the bolt esca-pe trom theI keeper M, when turned by the handle, so that the. end E comes against the pawl, the gravity ol" the bolt keepiiu;- it in the position indicated in the drawing. When it is desired to lock the door more seeurely the pawl is raised and the bolt turned till it drops into notch G. rIhel lock is lnade reversible by makingl anotch, l) E, on each Side-of the bolt, also sockets l( t'or the pawl, and zt hole, N, tor the handle ot' the pawl.
lt may be used t'or a mortiselock as well as on the side ot' the door.
\\'e are aware it is not new to provide a bolt with notches so that it may be operated by at knob-spindle and likewise by a key, and do not claim sueh construction.
Having" thus described our invtaition, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe bolt A provided with a long notch, l) E, und the. notch tr, and pivoted on a spindle so as to be thrown out ot the case by its own gravity, in combination with the pawl II constructed to be operated by hand and by a. key, as specified.
