ROD OR PIPE SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1916.
Application filed April 1, 1916. Serial No. 88,390.
to provide apparatusof the above mentioned.
character, which is simple in construction, strong, durable, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of. the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a.
side elevation of apparatus embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
and, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a .preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a preferably cylindrical body portion of the apparatus, provided with horizontal preferably diametrically arranged trunnions 6 carrying plates or washers 7, held thereon by means of bolts 8. Pivotally receiving the trunnions 6 are U-shaped straps 9 for connection with a support, vertically movable carriage or the like. The body portion 5 is provided with a vertical radially extending opening or recess 10, extending through the side thereof, as shown. Atranged above and below the body portion 5 are circular plates 11 and 12, attached thereto by means ofbolts 13, as shown. The plates ll and 12 are provided with radially extending openings 14 and 15, forming in effect a continuation of the opening 10, as shown. The upper plate 11 is provided with an. enlargement or boss 16. to contact with a sleeve 17 carried by a rod 18, extending through the opening 10 and being supported. The means to prevent the lateral movement of the rod 18 out of the opening 10 is carried by the bottom plate 12, and comprises curved jaws 19, operating within curved grooves 20. The jaws 19 have their free ends beveled, as shown at 21, to contact with the rod'18, to permit of the rod passing inwardly beyond the jaws but these jaws prevent the outward movement of the rod, as is obvious. Pivotally connected with the opposite ends of the curved jaws 19, as shown at 22, are levers 23, the inner ends of which are pivoted to the plate 12 within a recess 25, as shown at 24. The
levers 28 are moved apart or spread by a spring 24, attached thereto, as shown at 25.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that-the rod may be inserted by a lateral movement thereof within the open ing 10 and upon contacting with the beveled ends 21 of the jaws 19 will automatically spread the same, until the rod passes inwardly beyond them. The spring 24 will then automatically return the jaws 19 to the holding position. The rod 18 is supported I by the sleeve 17, contacting with the boss 16. The rod 18 is removed from the opening 10 by the operator moving the levers 23 toward each other, which serve to spread the beveled ends 21 of the jaws 19.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described the invention, 1 claim z In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a body portion having a laterally extending recess and provided upon opposite sides with trunnions, straps pivotallv receiving the trunnions, a plate mounted upon the upper end of the body portion said plate being provided with a laterally extending recess, a boss mounted upon the upper side of the plate, a, plate secured to the lower end of thebody portion and havinga laterally extending recess and provided upon its inner side with curved grooves, longitudinally curved jaws mounted In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 1
