Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lin 29, Jltllfi.
Application filed March 28, 1914. Serial No. 828,003.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, DELBERT L. HARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eugene, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking Fountains and Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved sanitary drinking fountain and faucet, and more particularly to such a device having pump mechanism associated therewith.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a means whereby sanitary drinking fountains may be practically combined and used in connection with ordinary pump mechanism and a domestic well such as are commonly found in rural districts, the invention being more especially adapted for use where a number of persons are in the habit of drinking at the pump or well, for instance, in rural school house yards, etc.
As a further object of the invention, provision is made whereby the pump may be utilized to force the water into a small pres sure tank against a. head of compressed air, and the pressure thus created is utilized to force the water vertically from the nozzle or bubbling valve of the drinking cup, the discharge of water, being, however, controlled by a suitable valve whereby the supply is conserved.
The invention still further aims to provide a valve so'constructed as to control, when operated, not only the water supplied to the drinking cup, but, if desired, the water supplied to a suitable discharge spout or faucet associated therewith.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part'of this application.
, In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical or longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away, of a pump operated combined sanitary drinking fountain and faucet constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, parts being shown in elevation, the section however being taken in a transverse direction; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. l is a cross section illustrating the arrangement of the operating mechanism interior-1y of the fountain stand; and Fig. 5 is atop plan view of the device.
Referring now to the drawings by numerale, 1 designates, as an entirety, the fountain stand, the base of which is enlarged as at 2. A base plate 3 serves as a support for the said stand 1, said plate having a receptacle 41 integral therewith into which the overflow or waste of the basin 5 is discharged. Said basin 5 is of ordinary construction having an outlet opening 6 formed therein as well as an inlet opening 7. Said opening (5 discharges the waste or overflow into a conduit 8 at one side of the stand, which conduit, is in communication with the chamber a by way of an opening 9 of the base plate A nozzle or bubbling valve 10 is positioned centrally within the bowl or basin 5, said valve being in communication and alined with the inlet port or opening 7. A vertical pipe section 11, terminating at one end in a discharge spout 12 and atits opposite end in an enlargement 13, is arranged concentrically within the basin or fountain stand 1, said section being annually enlarged as at 13 to form a seat or casing for an operating valve 14. Ports 15, 16 and 1? are arranged in radial relation with respect to the longitudinal axis of the said valve, the ports 15 and 17 being disposed at diametrically opposite points. Said valve is further provided with a handle 18 by means of which a rotation ofv the said valve may be effected to provide for the water supply to either the discharge spout 12 or the buhbli ng valve 10. Said valve handle 18 is so arranged as to be operated to effect valve adjustment from a convenient point extcriorly of the fountain stand. The enlargement l3 as Well as the section 11 are preferably integral with the base plate 3, the former, that is, the enlargement 18, being in communication with a well pipe or tube 19 depending into: the well from which the water supply necessary to the operation of the invention is derived. Said pipe or tube 19 has associated therewith the usual cylinder 20 within which is reciprocable a pump piston 21, the latter having connected thereto a piston rod 22 of a length sufficient to project through the wall of the enlargement l3 and into the hollow fountain stand 1. A packing nut 23 may be provided to render the opening through which the piston rod 22 extends watertight. Pivotally connected as at 24 to the said rod 22 are a pair of links 25 so shaped or bent as to straddle the enlargement 13 in a manner apparent upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. The
links 25 are in turn pivotally connected as at '26 to a second pair of links 27, the latter being rigid with a shaft 28 to which a pump or operating lever 29 is secured. Said lever 29 being rigid with said shaft, it is apparent that oscillation of the lever will, through the connection afforded by the links 27 and 25 reciprocate the piston rod 22 and the piston 21 in a manner necessary to effect a proper pumping action.
Within the fountain stand 1 and in communication with the section 11 above noted, is a pressure tank 30 into which the water supply is forced by the pumping action whereby to utilize the pressure of the air compressed therein to force the water vertically from the nozzle or bubbling valve 10 when the valve 14 is set for such operation.
Then it is desired that water be pumped and dispensed by Way of the discharge spout 12, the valve 14 is rotated until ports 16 and 17 register respectively with the pipe section 11 and the discharge spout 12. lVhen thus positioned, communication between I said section 11 and the inlet opening 7 of the basin 5 is closed. Operation of the lever 29 will cause water to be pumped upwardly through the well pipe 19 into the enlargement 13, through the pipe section 11 and finally out through the discharge spout 12. To provide for the dispensation of Water by way of the nozzle 10, the valve let is rotated until ports 15 and 17 register respectively with the basin inlet opening or passage way 7 and the section 11, communication being shut off between said section 11 and discharge'spout 12. The valve arrangement above noted is illustrated to advantage in Fig. 2. Operation of the lever 29 will cause water to be pumped from the source of water supply, against the pressure of the air within the pressure tank 30, which water, being under pressure, will, upon cessation of a pumping action, be forced vertically through the section 11 to the nozzle 10. A second opening 31 may be formed within the base plate 3 to provide for the escape of waste within the fountain stand 1 to the base 4 should such waste occur.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is apparent that by setting the valve until communication is closed between the pipe section 11 and the respective outlets? and 12, water may be pumped from the source of the supply to compress the air within the tank 30, the water being in this manner conserved, and, when it is desired that it be dispensed, forced vertically through the nozzle by the pressure within the said tank, without manipulation of the lever 29; that waste or overflow within the basin 5 and interiorly of the fountain stand 1 is alternately discharged to the chamber 1 through the respective openings 9 and 31 of the base plate 3; and that by the no rel arrangement of the links 27 and 25, force is directed to provide for the necessary reciprocation of the pumping above described.
In reduction to practice, I have found 8(] that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the abore description, as the preferred embodiment. is the most eiiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the r adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sac rificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
