Description

JOHN RYAN.
Improvement in Cigar Mvulde and Presses.
No. 119,653, Patented om. 3,1811.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN RYAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-MOLDS AND PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,653, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RYAN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a (ligar-Mold and Press 5 and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my device closed, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same opened.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of this invention relates to a mold and press in which freshly-made cigars are placed to give them a uniform and symmetrical shape. rIhe invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of its v arious parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the matrix-plate, and B the die-plate of my press, in the former of which is formed a series of matrices, A', the bottoms of which are adapted to give shape to the lower halves of the cigars which are laid in them. The upper plate B has a corresponding number of dies, B', so secured to its lower face as to project into the matrices A'. rIhese dies are so formed on their faces as to give the required shape or mold to the upper half of the cigar. C are hinges extending from the sides of the upper and lower sections for a very considerable distance backward before being pivoted together, so that when the upper plate is brought down upon the lowerthe dies will not force the cigars forward, but will irst come in contact with them at the shoulder and then immediately press down upon them throughout their length, thus insuring a perfectly-molded point,77 which would not be the result if the plates were simply hinged together at the back. It is designed to make the presses of capacity for either iifty or one hundred cigars, and to lie on the cigar-makers table, so that as each cigar is rolled up much time need not be spent in giving each cigar its proper shape, but to place it at once in one of the matrices, and, when the latter are filled, to press and mold them to a uniform shape and size, for which purpose I employ a cam or eccentric in the following manner: At each end of the lower plate I secure a metallic standard, D, which projects above the upper plate, and has an upward-inclined slot, a, terminating in a bearing for the journals at the ends of the cam-shaft E, which is inserted from the front edges of said standards. F is a lever secured to said shaft, which also has secured to it two or more'eccentrics, Gr, which, when the shaft is placed in its bearings and rotated, bear upon the upper plate and press its dies into the matrices upon the cigars. The plates being of wood, the upper one should be protected by metal plates where the eccentrics act upon it. A sufficient number of presses should be provided to each workman to enable the cigars to remain long enough in the press to be set in their form before removal.
I am aware that cigar-molds and presses have hitherto been made, or rather the molds in the plates, which in sufcient numbers have been placed in a screw or other press and then submitted to pressure, and therefore disclaim, broadly, the forming or molding of cigars in molds under pressure; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the matrix-plate A having the matrices A', the die-plate B provided with the dies B', said plates being pivoted together by the hinges C in the manner shown and described, and in^connection therewith the standards D, shaft E, lever I?, and eccentrics G, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN RYAN.
