UNITED STATES 'WARREN D. HATCH, OF ANTRIM, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF,
PATENT OFFICE.
SHEPARD RUSSELL, OF BOSTON, AND HENRY O. GOODRIOH, OF WORCES- TER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,606, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN D. HATCH, of Antrim, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Caster Attachment for Sewing-Machine Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The figure is an end view of a sewing-machine table to which my improvement has been applied.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved caster attachment for sewing-machine tables, dentists chairs, 850., which shall be so constructed and arranged that the weight of the table, chair, or other article may be thrown upon the casters or upon the feet of the article, according as it is desired to move the article or have it stand immovable; and it consists in op crating the long and short adjusting-levers of the casters by means of a toggle-lever hinged to the upper part of the frame.
Arepresents an end frame of a sewing-machine table, about the construction of which there is nothing new. B are lugs, which in the case of new frames are formed upon the lower part of said frames, but which in the case .of old frames are so formed that they may be clamped to the lower part of the frames. O are the caster-wheels or rollers, the standards or spindles D of which are made long and rormd and pass up through the lugs B. The upper ends of the shanks D have a groove formed around them, into which is sprung an open wire ring, 61, which keeps them from dropping out of the lugs B should the article to which they are attached be raised from the floor, and thus swivels them to said lugs. To the outer part of the upper side of the lugs B are lower end of the rod G. The upper end of the rod G is pivoted to the upper part of the frame A. The rod G is made jointed, as shown in the figure, so as to act as a toggle-joint in forcing down the shanks D of the casters, and thus throwing the weight of the table or other article upon the said casters, allowing the said table to be moved easily and freely in any direction.
By pushing the jointed rod Gr back into the position shown in dotted lines the levers E F will be raised into the position shown in dotted lines, allowing the table to rest upon its feet so as to remain stationary while in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the jointed rod G hinged to upper part of the frame, long lever F, short lever E, swiveled casters D O, and lugs B with each other to adapt them for attachment to a sewingmachine frame or other article, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed T. B. MOSHER. (45)
