Be it known that I, Hnuu H. HmsoH, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Electric-Lighting Apparatus, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is particularly designed to operate an incandescent lamp in connection with a miners cap and in cooperative relation with a storage battery provided with means to attach itto the miners person.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
The safety circuit including the automatic switch mechanism in the lamp hereinafter described is claimed in my divisional application Serial No. 717356, filed August 28, 1912, for Letters Patent of the United States.

Said bracket!) has the aperture 8 extending horizontally therethrough adapted to receive the hook of an ordinary miners lamp, but is also adapted to detachably support an incandescent electric lamp in cooperative connection with a storage battery, carried by the wearer of the cap, as hereinafter described.
As shown in Figs. I and III; the incandescent lamp socket 13 has the hanger plate 1-1 which has its upper portion extending transversely with respect to the axis of said socket and obliquely forward with respect to its lower vertical portion which is fitted to the front face of the pendent portion of said bracket 5. Said socket has the obliquely extending tubular shank 15 having the clamp block 16 in which the flexible conductors 17 and 18 are held by the clamp screw 19. Said socket member 15 carries the spring finger 20 which extends through the vertical aperture 21 in the horizontal member G of the bracket 5, in opposition to said hanger plate l-t so as to resiliently engage said bracket 5 between said hanger plate and spring finger. Said conductor 17 is detachably connected by the screw 22 with the spring contact 23 carried by the insulating block 2 1 in said socket 13, and, said conductor 18 is detachably connected with said tubular extension 15 of said socket by the screw 25. The lamp casing 26 forms a plug which is detachably secured in said socket 13 by its stud 27 engaging the bayonet slot 28 in said socket. Said lamp casing 26 has the insulating block 29 which carries the central contact 30 in concentric relation with the tubular screw receptacle 31 in which an incandescent electric lamp 32 is detachably engaged. Said receptacle 31 is electrically connected with the contact 33 carried by said block 29 and is also electrically connected with the spring terminal 34: by the insulated wire 35. Said terminal 34: is carried by the insulating block 36 which is clamped to the reflector 37 by the screw 38; said terminal 34 being normally electrically connected with said reflector by the cutout spring 39, which is normally held in the position shown in Fig. III by the glass panel 40 which fits in the marginal seats 41 in said reflector. The construction and arrangement of said electrical connections including the cutout spring 39 is such that when said panel 40 is accidentally broken the lamp 32 is instantly extinguished by said spring39 bending inwardly and separating from the. terminal 34; Said conductors 17 and 18 are conveniently detachably held on said cap by the strap 42 having the snap fastening 43 which may be readily released to permit said conductors and lamp to be removed from the cap. Said conductors extend through the flexible tubular wire coil 45 to the cylindrical plug 46 where they are detachably connected (as shown in Fig. X) by the binding screws 47, in electrical con nection with the contacts 48 and 49. Said plug 46 has the circular flange 51 which fits within the circular flange 52 on the cap 53 which normally prevents access to said binding screws 47. Said cap has the radial flange 54 with lugs 55 extending upon opposite sides of said conductors 17 and 18 and is detachably secured. in the position shown in Fig. IX, by the screw 56 which extends between said conductors in engagement with the radial flange 58 on said plug 46'. Said plug 46 has the stud 59 adapted to pass through the notch 60 in the perimeter of the socket 61 in the battery casing 62 and retain said plug in said socket when said stud is turned aside from said notch. Said battery casing 62 is conveniently provided with the bail handle 64 having axially alined trunnions 65 and 66 pivotally mounted in the bearings 67 and 68 axially parallel with said socket 61 above the latter. Said trunnion 66 is utilized as a detent to retain said plug 46 in engagement with said socket 6 1, being pressed outwardly by the spring 70., into engagement with the detent aperture 71 in said radial flange 58 of said plug 46 to normally retain the same in the position shown in Fig. I.

IV, V and Vi said contact 74 is connected by the wire 7 8 with the fulcrum plate 79 of the switch lever 80 carried. by the shaft 81 extending through the top of said casing 62 and provided with the operating knob 82 at the top thereof, The insulating switch block 83 which carries said fulcrum plate 79 also carries the two binding posts 84 and 85 with which said lever 80 is adapted to be selectively electrically connected in accordance with the position to which it is shifted by rotation of said knob 82. Electrical conductors 87 and 88 respectively extend from said binding posts 84 and 85 to the electrodes 89 and 90 of the respective batteries and 951 which have their other poles 94 and connected by the electrical conductors 96 with said electrical contact 75 of the socket 61; so that either of said batteries 92 or 93 may be connected in circuit between said socket terminals 74 and 75.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. VII and VIII the .socket 98 incloses two electrical contacts 99 and 100 respectively adapted to make electrical connection with said plug contacts 48 and 49, or with said contacts 30 and 33 of said lamp. The insulating block 102, being rigidly secured in the battery casing 103, carries the two spring terminals 104 and 105 respectively electrically connected with said socket contacts 99 and 100 by the wires 107 and 108, etc., and, said terminals 104 and 105 respectively electrically contact with the poles 110 and 111 of the storage battery 112 inserted in said casing 103, as indicated in Fig. V111. Said battery casings 62 and 103 are respectively provided with slide covers 114 and 115 and, as indicated in Fig. VII the latter is pressed outwardly to form the slotted keeper 116 for the rotary .lock 11'. which is arranged to be operated by the key 118 shown in Fig. X11 which has the slot 119 which fits over the cross bar 120 in the circular opening 121 in said lock 117.
Said battery casings 62 and 103 are also respectively provided with sheet metal loops 124 and 125 through which extends the belt 128, shown in Fig. 1, having the buckle 127 so as to be adjustable around the waist of the operator who wears said cap. it being frequently necessary for the miner to work in recumbent position it may be observed that either of said battery casings 62 and 103 with the appurtenances thereof may be shifted around said belt 126 in accordance with the position which the miner desires to assume. For instance, it may be shifted to the back of the belt when the miner desires to lie upon either side, and, it may be shifted to either side when the miner desires to lie upon his back.
The form or" my invention shown in Figs. 1 to V1 inclusive is advantageous iii-thatthe outfit includes two primarily separate and distinct batteries 92 and 93 which may be used in succession; so that when one battery is exhausted and the lam consequently extinguished it is merely necessary to turn the knob 82 to place the other battery in operative connection with the lamp; so that the miner ne d never be left in darkness by reason of exhaustion or other inoperativeness of single battery.
The other form n my invention, shown in Vii and V11 is advantageous in that the battery 112 may be more readily inserted and removed with respect to the spring ,minals 104 and than the batteries 92 "its disengage said batteries. Moreover, the latter form of my invention is advantageous in that all of the electrical connections are rendered inaccessible to the unskilled operator by means of the lock and key above described.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim lfIn a portable electric lighting apparatus, a battery casing; a cylindrical plug socket in said casing having a bayonet slot notch in its perimeter and inclosing two electrical contacts; an insulating block in said casing; two spring terminals supported by said block arranged, in insulated spaced relation, to respectively electrically connect with the similarly spaced poles of a battery inserted in said casing; means electrically connecting said contacts with said terminals; a cylindrical plug fitted to said socket, having a detent aperture, means to detachably bind two flexible conductors, a removable cover plate for said binding means, and, a stud on said plug fitted to said notch and adapted to retain said plug in said casing when said plug is turned with said stud aside from said notch; a bail handle on said casing having axially alined trunnions, in bearings axially parallel with said socket above the latter, one of said trunnions being axially movable and forming a detent with a spring whereby it is pressed outward into engagement with said detent aperture of said socket, arranged to detain the latter in engagement with said casing, but retractable to release said socket; whereby said plug may be inserted and removed with respect to said socket when said stud is in registry with said notch in the casing, but is normally retained in said socket by the engagement of said detent.

In a portable electric lighting apparatus, a battery casing; a cylindrical plug socket in said casing having a bayonet slot notch in its perimeter and inclosing two electrical contacts; two spring terminals in said casing arranged, in insulated spaced relation, to respectively electrically connect with the similarly spaced poles of a battery inserted in said casing; means electrically connecting said contacts with said terminals; a cylindrical plug fitted to turn in said socket; a stud on said plug fitted to said notch and adapted to retain said plug in said casing when said plug is turned with said stud aside from said notch; and, a detent movable to engage and release said plug with respect to said socket; whereby said plug may be inserted and removed with respect to said socket when said stud is in registry with said notch in the casing, but is normally retained in said socket by said detent.

In a portable electric lighting apparatus, a battery casing having a cylindrical plug socket with a bayonet slot notch in its perimeter; a cylindrical plug fitted to said socket, having a stud fitted to said notch and adapted to retain said plug in said socket when said plug is turned with said stud aside from said notch; and, a detent movable to engage and release said plug with respect to said socket; whereby said plug may be inserted and removed with respect to said socket when said stud is in registry with said notch in the casing. but is normally retained in said socket by said detent.

In a portable electric lighting apparatus, a battery casing having a cyliiulrical plug socket with a bayonet slot notch in its perimeter and two electrical contacts; a cylindrical plug fitted to said socket. having means to detachably engage two flexible conductors, a removable cover plate for said connecting means, and, a stud on said plug fitted to said notch and adapted to retain said plug in said casing when said plug is turned with said'stud aside from said notch; a bail handle on said casing having axially alined trunnions, in bearings axially parallel with said socket above the latter, one of said trunnions being axially movable and forming a detent with a spring whereby it is pressed outward into engagement with the detent aperture in said socket. arranged to detain the latter in engagement with said casing, but retractable to release said socket; whereby said plug may be inserted and removed with respect to said socket when said stud is in registry with said notch in the casing, but is normally retained in said socket by the engagement of said detent.

In a portable electric lighting apparatus, a battery casing having a cylindrical plug socket with a bayonet slot notch in its perimeter and two electrical contacts; a cylindrical plug fitted to said socket, having means to detachably engage two conductors, and, a. stud on said plug fitted to said notch and adapted to retain said plug in said casing when said plug is turned with said stud aside from said notch; a bail handle on said casing having axially alined trunnions, in bearings axially parallel with said socket above the latter, one of said trunnions being axially movable and having a spring whereby it is pressed outward into engagement with the detent aperture in said socket, a1 anged to detain the latter in engagement with said casing, but retractable to release said socket; whereby said plug may be inserted and removed with respect to said socket when said stud in registry with said notch in the casing, but is normally retained in said socket by the engagement of said detent. 7

In a portable electric lighting apparatus, a batery casing having a cylindrical plug socket with a bayonet slot notch in its perimeter and inclosing two electrical contacts; an insulating block in said casing; two spring terminals supported in insulated spaced relation by said block in position to respectively electrically contact with the poles of a battery inserted in said casing; means electrically connecting said contacts with said spring terminals; a cylindrical plug fitted to said socket, having means to detachably engage two flexible conductors, a removable cover plate for said connecting means, and, a stud on said plug fitted to said notch and adapted to retain said plug in said casing when said plug is turned with said stud aside from said notch.

The combination with a battery casing having a plug socket; of a plug rotarily fitted to said socket, having a stud adapted to enter a bayonet slot notch in the perimeter of said socket and retain said plug in said socket when said stud is turned aside from said notch; and, a reciprocatory detent on said casing having a spring whereby it is adapted to engage an aperture in said plug and movable to release said plug; whereby, said plug is normally rretained in operative connection with said socket but may be removed therefrom when said detent is re tracted.
8. The combination witha battery casing having a plug socket; of a plug rotarily fitted to said socket having a stud adapted to pass through a bayonet slot notch in the perimeter of said socket and retain said plug in said socket when said stud is turned aside from said notch; and, a detent on said casing adapted to engage an aperture in said plug, having means normally engaging it therewith, but movable to release it; whereby, said plug is normally retained in operative connection with said socket but may be removed therefrom when said detentis disengaged.

The combination with a socket having a bayonet siot notch in its perimeter and inclosing two electrical contacts; of a plug fitted to said socket, including two electrical Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the contacts, and having a stud adapted to enter said notch; a radial flange on said plug having an aperture; a reciprocatory detent, carried by said socket having a spring whereby it is adapted to detachably engage the aperture in said radial flange on said plug; means carried by said plug adapted to detachably connect two flexible conductors with said plug contacts; a flexible tubular wire coil carried by said radial flange and encircling said conductors; a cap for said plug having a circular flange fitted thereto, a radial flange opposed to the radial flange on said plug, and, lugs extending upon opposite sides of said conductors; and, means detachably securing said cap on said plug, including a screw extending through the radial fiange on said cap in engagement With the radial flange on said plug.
10. The combination with a battery casing having a plug socket; of a plug rotarily fitted to said ocket, having a stud adapted to pass through a bayonet slot notch in the perimeter of said socket and retain said plug in said socket when said stud is turned aside from said notch; and a detent movable to engage and disengage said plug, arranged to prevent rotary movement thereof when engaged therewith; whereby, said plug is normally retained in operative connection with said socket but may be removed therefrom when said detent is disengaged.
11. The combination with a battery casing having a plug socket; of a plug rotarily fitted to said socket; means on said plug arranged to engage and disengage said socket by rotary movement of said plug; and a detent movable to engage and disengage said plug, arranged to prevent rotary movement thereof when engaged therewith; whereby, said plug is normally retained in operative connection with said socket but may be removed therefrom when said detent is disengaged.
