Be it known that I, ALBERT P.' CocHRANn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of the same name, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Pieces, of whi-:h the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in protruding corner pieces for rectangular or other structures adapted to be used as receptacles or containers and among the several objects sought are, first, the provision of means whereby the corners of boxes, trunks and like rectangular receptacles are rigidly secured and held so that the adjacent sides, top or bottom forming the sides of the angle of which the corner is the apex, are maintained in correct relation, both from the interior and the exterior. Also to so adapt, design and arrange the devices that they may be applied to circular or other curved structures having flat bottoms, whereby the edges are protected and the joints afforded additional security.
A second object is to provide devices whereby the corners of such receptacles are protected by buers against direct contact with objects, the protruding element extending beyond the confines of the receptacle directly outward in the plane of the center angle presented. And third, to provide devices that operate in the manner of casters, thereby avoiding the use of skids, rollers and the like in moving heavy receptacles.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, ,forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corner piece made in accordance with the invention, and illustrating its application. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4L is a perspective view of the buffer looking from the attaching side. Fig. 5 is a similar view ofthe corner casing. Fig. 6 is a like view of the inner, clamp member, or filler. Fig. 7 is a sectional view, showing a modied form of construction. Fig. S is a perspective view of the devices as applied to a round container. Fig. 9 is a sectional view of the same taken on line 9 9 of Fig. 10. Fig. 10 is a partial plan view of the same, taken on line 10-10 of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the buffer. The device comprises a triangular casing, preferably made of sheet metal, having three equal sides 10 joined at right angles along their two contacting edges, the third or outer edge 11 being cut in any fanciful design desired; the apex of the angle is removed leaving a triangular opening 12 and the sides may be perforated as at 13, to receive screws or like securing means whereby the casing may be attached to the receptacle, if it be preferred to do so, independently of the main securing means; this casing is susceptible of being made in one piece by press methods commonly used.
A semi-spherical, knob-like, bufferl, is formed with a triangular recess 16 and having a bolt 17,A the head'18 of which is rigidly embedded within the buffer body; this bolt 17 extends outwardly from the apex of the recess, in the plane thereof, and is adapted to pass through the opening 12 in the casing, into and through an opening made in the extreme corner of the receptacle and also through the interior, triangular corner piece or filler 20, where the bolt receives a nut 19 set in an annular recess 21 formed in the inner, dat face 22 of the member 20 and which is made sufficiently large to receive a wrench or other suitable nut operating tool.
It will be understood that the face 22 is disposed diagonally to the interior of the receptacle, the member illing the corner, and, in combination with the casing, materially strengthening the same.
Obviously a screw may be used in place of the bolt and nut, the head being suited to the recess 2l and the threaded shank fitted to pass into and engage with the buffer.
It is further noted that the semi-spherical buier may be made of such material as is best adapted for its purpose, whether the obj ect be to protect the receptacle or its surroundings, such as metal, cork, rubber, ber, etc.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 7, the casing 26 and buffer 25 are formed integral by processes of casting or metal stamping and are particularly appropriate for heavy receptacles.

A buer 30 having a semi-spherical head, in which is engaged the head 35 of the bolt 3G extending out through the recess 35a, is connected thereby to the casing, which is formed With a curved front 3l, suited to the side ot the receptacle, and a flat bottom 32 engaging With the base of the same.
Inside of the receptacle is a filler 33 having a recess 34k to contain the nut 37, which aords means for clamping the device securely to the receptacle; obviously as many as may be desired can be used.
It is not desired to confine the invention to the exact constructions shown as minor modifications may be made Without departing from the characteristics involved.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a casing suited to the edge and partially enveloping the side and base of a receptacle, a buffer fitted on the outside of said casing, a iller disposable Within the interior of the receptacle, a connecting means between the filler and buiier, the latter being rigidly held to the casing by said connecting means, and means for connecting said casing to the receptacle independently of the butter.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing adapted to cover the corner of a receptacle, a buer arranged eX- teriorly of said casing, a filler for the interior corner of the receptacle, a disengageable connecting means between said filler and buffer, the edges of said casing extending laterally beyond the butter, and means applied to said protruding edges of the casing for securing said casing to the receptacle independently of the bufer.
3. A device otl the character described comprising a casing adapted to cover the corner of a receptacle, a buffer arranged eX- teriorly of said casing, an interior corner filler having a recess, and a clamping means engaging said recess and said butler, the part of said means which engages said recess being housed therein.
