, Be it known that I, EDGAR LpCULVER, a .hitizen of the United States, residihg at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to an improved fuel and method of manufacturing same from Waste material.
The object is not only to produce an 1m' proved fuel, but also to utilize the waste or trash of a. community, factories, packinghouses, saw-mills, house garbage, solids 'rom sewerage, and garbage of Whatever description.
The non-combustible matter, such as cans, iron, glass, stones, and dirt are separated, and the remaining mass is placed in a pulverizer or reduction machine, Where it is ground and reduced to suitable size- It is then conveyed to a pug-mill or other ap proved mechanism for reducing it to a pulp, Water and steainbeing added so that the mass thus treated becomes a binder sufficient to bind the other ingredients, such as coal or coal-dust which may be added, all together, and the more of a pulp that this mass becomes, the more of the coal or coal dust it will bind solidly together. From the pug-mill or pulping machine, the mass is preferably fed to a mixer, although the mixing might be done right in the pug-mill or pulping machine. It is then that the fine coal or coal-dust in suitable proportionsif used-is added. The proportion is deter mined by the class of fuel required. F or instance, if a quick fire is required, less coal dust is used; and at this time might be added, if desired, a small percentage of crude oil, asphaltum or waste pitch from an oil refinery for the purpose of increasing the combustion, and any of the numerous common disinfectants in sufiicient amount to kill any infectious germ life is also added; also some of the numerous and Well-known deodorizing agents, preferably coalor Water-tar may be added, for the reason that the tar is an additional factor in the deo dorizing of the smoke While the fuel is being consumed. The entire mass, including these ingredients, is then thoroughly mixed, the mixture being reduced to the consistency of that of stiff mud brick material before being molded. The mass is then conveyed to a Specification of Letters Patent.

The invention, therefore, consists in a product composed of certain Waste elements,
such as garbage, trash, paper, manure, and all materials of a fibrous nature, mixed with hot water or steam, or both, into a binding pulp, to which may be added. tar during the pulping of the mass, the steam and tar acting to kill all germ-life, and the tar serving as a deodorizer for the manufactured product, as well as deodorizing thegfumes while combustion takes place. Th pulp thus formed is conveyed to a pug-mill Where the coal (if used) is added, after having been reduced to a dust, and the mass is thoroughly mixed, and then molded and dried.
The pulp formedis somewhat in. the nature of that used in the manufacture of pasteboard, and constitutes an excellent binder.
I claim:
1.
