EDSON E. BURNHAM, OF AMITE, LOUISIANA.
TAKE-UP DEVICE FOR LINE-WIRES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1916.
Application filed May 10, 1916. Serial No. 96,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDsoN E. BURNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amite, in the parish of Tangipohoa and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Up Devices for Line-Wires; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination tightener and drum for taking up slack in guy lines, etc, and thereby dispensing with the use of block and tackle.
My invention consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and ar:
rangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is. a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the block with drum removed, and Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of the drum.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a line wire, the slack of which it is designed to take up by the tension device, and B is an anchor pole.
C designates a stationary plate having arms C with diagonally disposed slots C therein, the inner ends of which are widened to form recesses for the reception of the line wire. Said plate has a central aperture F with an offset F in the wall thereof and is adapted to receive the spindle end H of the drum H said end having an integral lug H, designed to pass through the offset F. Said drum'has formed in one end grooved ways, designated by letter O and shown clearly in Fig. 4, and the upper surface of the plate C has a similar groove 0' formed therein and through which grooves a pin 0 may be passed to hold the drum in diiferent positions. The drum has a central aperture R through which the end of the cable is passed before being wound about the drum, the latter also being provided with a flange T and having its outer end S squared for convenience in receiving a wrench or other tool to rotate the same.
In operation, the device may be applied .to the line at any location by simply dropping the wire in the slots of the block, passingthe wire about the anchor pole and passing the end of the wire through the hole in the drum, after which the drum may be turned by wrench or other suitable tool and the wire caused to wind about the same, the drum being held in position to prevent the unwinding of the wire by passing a key through the registering grooves in the end of the drum face of said plate.
What I claim to be new is A take-up device for line wires, etc, comprising a plate having oppositely disposed arms with diagonal slots therein for the reception of a line wire to be taken up, said plate having a central aperture with an offset therein, a drum having a spindle end journaled in said aperture and provided with a lug adapted to pass through said offset and serving to fasten the drum to the plate, the face of the plate and said drum having grooves which are adapted to be brought into registration, and a key engaging said grooves to hold the drum from ro tation.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
