UNITED STATES ISAAC S. BUNNELL, OF CARBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREAD-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,569, dated October 3, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAc S. BUNNELL, of Carbondale, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cutter for Bread, Spc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing' forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents an end elevation of my improved cutter for bread, Ste( Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same taken on the plane of the line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts.
This invention relates to a new machine for cutting bread; and consists in a new manner of hanging the knife so that it will be supported at both ends and moved with a slight drawing motion to insure a powerful cut.
A in the dra-Wing represents the knife pivoted at one end to a straight lever, B, and at the other end to an elbow-lever, C. The lever B is at a, pivoted to the supporting-frame. The lever C is pivoted to said frame at b, under the middle of the knife. The frame D contains the legs d d, a horizontal bar, c, anda vertical projection, f, all cast in one piece. The ear g, receiving the pivot b, is underneath -the bar e, and somewhat set back of its face, so that the horizontal arm h of the elbow-lever C will strike against the lower edge of e (see Fig. 2) to arrest the knife when swung up and prevent its being' raised more than necessary. E is a box or support for the matter to be out, secured at one end upon the bar c and to the projections f, and at the other end to an additional leg, t'.
The knife when swung down by aperson holding it by the handle j will descend at thehandle end slightly faster than at the other end, thus producing a drawing cut.
The device is adapted to cutting hay, straw, Ste., without change in the arrangement of its working parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The combination, as described, with knife A, of the straight lever B and nearly right-angled lever C, each pivoted at opposite ends of the.
knife, and also to the frame, for the purpose of giving a backwardly-drawing cut to the knife from heel to point when forced down.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 27th day of July, 1871.
